I really enjoyed this book....more than I expected I would! I am a big "Hugo" fan--loved the book and the movie. Purchasing the movie companion was kind of a given for me, but I was pretty sure it would be like most such books--primarily just a way to make more money. Surprisingly, I found it to be rather interesting. I loved the pictures and interviews--it even smells good! I learned more about the author (Selznick), his inspiration for the book, and Scorsese's desire to make the film. I learne...more

First of all, this is a gorgeous book! The packaging, the photos themselves, borders, type of paper-- very elegant. I like the way it describes the making of the film from several viewpoints. After reading this, it makes perfect sense that Scorsese would choose this as his first "children's film". I enjoyed the way he described the use of 3-D to help convey depth and personality, and the importance of films and family in his life, especially the father-son bond.

Another plus to this book is that...more

When The Invention of Hugo Cabret first hit the shelves, I stood there at Barnes & Noble waiting for the sales clerk to cut open the box for me so I could buy my book. I've been a long-time Brian Selznick fan, and I had followed his entries on his website as he got ready for publication. I love art, travel, films, entertainment, creativity, and most especially, stories of redemption. This book had it all for me. I was already familiar with Méliès's Journey to the Moon movie, and in fact, I u...more

Once there was a book about a boy named Hugo Cabret and his automaton and their adventures in Paris. Then there was a movie based on the book. Then there was this book that talks about the adaptation of the book to the movie.

The reason I read this book, or why I even knew about it in the first place, was because I saw it on the reserve shelves at the library. It was shortly after the movie had been released on DVD, so there was a waiting list for it. I added my name to the list and it finally ca...more

If you loved The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and if you loved the movie Hugo, this book is a must read! Written by Brian Selznick but with sections by other authors and many quotes by Martin Scorsese and other members of the movie team, the book includes not only the historical background (biographical information about Georges Meliers, Paris in 1931), but also tons of behind the scenes photos and summaries of all the team members. It ends with a description of how Brian Selznick got a cameo in th...more

For anyone who's wondered what it takes to produce a large-scale, big-budget film like Martin Scorcese's Hugo, this book is likely to answer any question. I read and loved Brian Selznick's The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and I really enjoyed the film adaptation Hugo. With The Hugo Movie Companion, Selznick takes readers on a journey to show how his beloved novel became a Hollywood motion picture.

With only five chapters, this book is a quick read. Regardless, Selznick goes into a good amount of det...more

Heavily illustrated, the Hugo Movie Companion closely resembles the look and feel of Brian Selznick’s original graphic novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Includes interviews of key people behind the making of the film; side-by-side visual comparisons of artwork from the book and people, props, costumes, and sets from the movie; as well as information about automatons, early cinema, special effects and 3D technology, etc. This book is visually stunning and filled with fascinating information. "The Hugo Movie Companion" is an excellent behind-the-scenes book about making the movie 'Hugo'. Selznick has brief one and two page essays on the time period of the movie, the historical background of movie making, and the people who are needed to make the movie. Not just the principal actors, but the technical people and what they do are described. The last chapter is an essay on how the last two minutes of the movie was filmed. There were lots of pictures throughout the book. This was a fun a...more

The Hugo Movie Companion is a book about a movie that is based on a book about movies. Hm… And yet, we are actually not back to where we started. We’ve come a long way since George Melies. This charming book shows us in both pictures and words the modern day magic of movie making. It’s a behind the scenes book like no other.

Selznick intersperses photographs, drawings, and text all together in a way that is fun to read, informative, accessible to children, and also interesting to adults. For some...more

Though this book on the making of the movie "Hugo," is aimed at a middle grade audience, it contains a lot of fascinating information for anyone who is interested in movies and how they are made. Brian Selznick, the author of "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," from which the movie is adapted, is our tour guide on this step by step journey through the translation of his book into a film. Selznick starts off by describing how he dreamed up the idea for his book and what inspired him to write this par...more

This book had some fabulous information, descriptions, illustrations, and photographs from the making of the film, Hugo. Including interviews with the director, actors, composer, costume designer, cinematographer, etc. this book provided a lot of interesting insight. Nevertheless, my favorite part was just browsing through and looking at all of the concept art and the pages that compared illustrations from the novel with scenes from the actual film.

I thought the movie Hugo was amazing. The book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick was my first introduction to a graphich novel. He really set the standard high for that genre of book for me. This companion book to the movie gave so more insight into the writing of the book as well. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to read this.
Ciara *I love Harry Potter!*
I will begin this review by informing you I did not enjoy the movie, 'Hugo.' It was, frankly, uninteresting at times and I did not enjoy it. I read this movie companion, too, and it was fine for what it was. It was well laid out and informative, but really, the movie was a disappointment so I can't give this too high a rating if the 'plot' isn't good!

Brian Selznick's fans will enjoy this detailed look into how his award-winning book was turned into a movie. Unlike many "behind the scenes of how the movie was made" books, this one is authored by Selznick, and his influence is very clear in the artistry of the book. Illustrations from "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" are contrasted with still shots from the movie, short biographies of the actors and others involved in the making of the movie are given, and over all of it, Selznick's v...more

Gorgeous photos, interviews with the cast and crew. It would be a good introduction for anyone to what goes on behind the scenes of a movie. I loved the chapter describing how the last scene was put together.
Michelle
Short two-page spreads about various people who made the movie happen, both in front of and behind the camera, along with comparison pictures from the book and the movie.

Very interesting behind the scenes look at the movie Hugo. Loved all the color pics. I also enjoyed hearing from so many people that were involved. Just a great read.
Veronica Hester
I learned some new things from this book! Learning all the roles of the movie was great. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will soon!
Isabella

I think that the book is much better then the movie because books are a lot more detailed.
Leigh
Wonderful - this just extended my obsession with the original book and movie to a whole new level! Loved it!
Lauren MacFarland
This is a beautiful companion to the movie, very in depth and it shows an in-depth understanding of the book and movie adaption (the benefit of having it been written by the Brian Selznick, who wrote 'Hugo').
Andrea Hall
This is a great non-fiction read. I am not usually a fan of movie companions but this one was great. It included so much background for the movie and the book. Fully of history and information.

This is a very interesting book that covers every aspect of adapting Mr. Selznick's novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, for the screen. The author profiles not only the director, Martin Scorcese, but also the screen writer, the actors and actresses, camera crew, special effects crew, costume designer, etc.

If you are curious about what is involved in bringing a book to life as a movie, this is a worthwhile read, and it is very well illustrated with photos, diagrams, drawings, etc.
Debbie
An interesting look into the people that made the movie, who they are, what they did, etc.

The film. The music. The train station. Saw the movie in 3D twice! Purchased a copy to watch again and again on iPad, AppleTV, etc. The background in this book is enlightening without ruining the magic of the film. Unlike those awful "making of" additions to dvds. The book is full of color, photos, history. A beautiful book to own alongside the inspiration for the movie - The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the original in hardback.

Loved the book. Loved the movie. Now I am learning about the making of both of them. What a surprise this book was. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Written by the author who wrote and illustrated the fabulous book upon which the wonderful movie is based on. I can't wait to get the DVD and look for all the things Selznick wrote about. Amazing.
Shazzer
Reading this just made me love the movie all the more. J'adore.

This book is actually very interesting, having interviews with a large number of the cast and crew involved in making the film, from the director to the script supervisor. It's also packed with pictures, from the original book and from the production of the film. This is a must read for fans of Hugo Cabret, the movie or movie-making in general. Well done, again, Mr. Selznick.
