Peter Never Came

The characters in Ashley Cowger's short stories learn to accept the fear, the regret, and the beauty of growing up in a world where Peter Pan will never come. The lives portrayed here are firmly planted in reality, a place where dreams loom only as hope on a farway horizon.

Fairytales are always magical; they bring the impossible into our lives in order to refresh our sense of wonder. But fairytales also teach impressionable girls some potentially hazardous lessons about staying passive and clutching to a potentially unfulfilling chastity, or fairytales set boys up to embrace unreachable ideals of heroism and romance. Ashley Cowger’s collection presents a sardonic take on fairytales, upending our cultural mythology about the innocence of childhood and undermining ...more

Peter Never Came is a collection that builds in intensity the way a novel or a coming of age tale does. The conflicts in the initial stories deal with children. Whether old or young, the main characters struggle with fields of vision limited by their basic understanding of conflict beyond good versus evil. In the story Pan and Pirates an older narrator remembers the emotional demons he first witnessed in himself as a grade-schooler, and which he believes defined his adulthood. In the story "When ...more

What a strange and disturbing set of short stories from my friend and colleague and person-who-has-way-more-tattoos-than-me. Let's just say I'm going to think twice about that Jack Skellington doll in her office, now that I've devoured "The Kind That Can be Real," a story (novella?) about a 30-year-old woman-child, Rhetta, who trusts her future to Mindy the "talking" doll. There are so many things that could go wrong with a story about an anorexic, traumatized woman and her talking doll, but ...more

Being a person that normally doesn't read short stories, I did find this collection enjoyable. The author is a clear and concise writer that captures the voices of her characters. Whether it is the voice of a little boy or the thoughts of a mad woman (who thinks she's quite, normal, thank you), Cowger makes us believe in the characters.

My only problem with this book is that its predictable. Most of the stories featured cliched stock characters like the fat police officer or the irredeemable hom

This short story collection is astonishingly well-written, with characters and details that suck you in and make you forget about everything else. But what I most love about Peter Never Came is its structure and flow. Unlike other story collections that feel like a grab bag of journal publications, this book is a cohesive collection that propels the reader forward with the same momentum as a novel. The cumulative effect is an emotional one. Nostalgia for childhood, sadness at being stuck as an ...more
