Altered is one of those books that are highly addicting, with action that engrosses you until you become quite satisfied with the read. But, there are particulars that nagged at me which, individually, are irrelevant, but together, they become a little too bothersome to simply forgive and forget.

But, there are particulars that nagged at me which, individually, are irrelevant, but together, they become a little too bothersome to simply forgive and forget.

The whole story in Altered consists of a chase. These modified humans have escaped their prison, and, bringing Anna with them, are on the run from her father's employers. Throughout this run we get clues that were planted to help them find something that is apparently very important. Deciphering these clues were, for the most part, pretty interesting, even clever at times. However, when they stumble upon a "code" that is simply a mix of X V I letters... and they don't get what it means... I had to stop reading to take a breath and roll my eyes a little. Even though Anna is home schooled and lacking a life outside the lab, numeral numbers are hardly mystifying. Especially when she "gets it" after seeing a grandfather clock. This is definitely a very small matter, nonetheless, it got under my skin and made me see the protagonist as a little brainless.

That was the first annoyance I stumbled upon. The second came by when they idiotically decide to walk into the enemy headquarters. Why? I have no clue. It made no sense for them to do so other than to create more plot excitement. Obviously, it went about as well as you can imagine. Seeing as they had no reasoning behind this decision, I got irritated by the stupid factor of it and hoped they got what they deserved.

These issues aside, I did quite enjoy the book, especially the scientific notions involved. I love the idea of genetic modifications, humans with abilities or powers, and Altered is fascinating on that front. I wanted to know more, though. Why it all started; the point behind everything. I'll assume those details are forthcoming. In this first installment, we're focusing on the boys and learning the ropes along with them. The characters are a fun bunch of charismatic guys. Some charming, some… not. I enjoyed the diversity in their personalities, which made for a great group dynamic. They're all as close as brothers; they're all they've ever known, after all. There is also romance involved, which becomes the source of some controversy between the boys. I thought Rush blended this aspect well with the overall pacing of the book; it will satisfy those who need romance in their books, but it doesn't distract from the intensity of the plot. Personally, I never felt a true connection between Anna and Sam, though. It was missing that spark. This could be due to characterization issues: With so much happening, being on the run for most of the book, character building is not the book's first priority. This is fine for the type of story it's trying to be, but the authenticity is lacking in the romantic element.

Altered is not without its flaws, still, the story is engaging with enough excitement to make these flaws a little less consequential. Having seen this novel being tagged as dystopian/post apocalyptic, I must warn you that I never got a dystopian feel from this whatsoever. It's an action novel dealing with genetics, abilities, and a messed up government behind it all. Read it when you're in the mood for a fast paced sci-fi thriller, not a science-y dystopian--in which case I'd recommend Partials.

Somewhere between a 3.5 and 4...

Jennifer Rush’s debut novel was initially pitched as Dollhouse meets Prison Break, a brief description that isn’t too inaccurate at all. Although it isn’t quite that good, I still had a stellar time reading this book and appreciated every nail-biting moment and edge-of-my-seat scene of action. The plot is clever and unpredictable, but nothing too taxing, and the characters are an entertaining and engaging bunch. This is good, very good, but not without a few minor faults.

Let us start with the four boys. Sam, Nick, Cas and Trev remember nothing from their lives before the genetic alterations. All they have ever known is their secure rooms in Anna’s basement, her constant presence, and the tests administered by her Dad on behalf of the Branch. Despite their lack of memories, all four have distinct personalities, forming a very dynamic group together. Where Nick is distrustful and defensive, Cas is good-humoured and mischievous. Where Sam is guarded and quiet, Trev is comforting and open-armed. Their compatibility with each other, despite being a result of the alterations, is almost like friendship. I enjoyed reading about them, from their escape to their individual relationships with Anna. At times, however, Rush occasionally makes the mistake of telling, rather than showing. This is especially true at the start, but it is easy to appreciate the boys’ personalities regardless by the mid-way point.

Anna is a little more difficult to distinguish, but she is by no means unlikeable. She is forced to join the boys on their escape journey, and in doing so, leaves behind her stable world to be flung head-first into chaos. Along the way, between evading Branch agents and buying guns, her relationship with Sam intensifies. It is challenging to appreciate the romantic plot at first, especially given the lack of time to pause and reflect, but it manages to eventually develop well throughout the book. Sam is Aiden St. Delphi Lite, with a hint of Tobias Eaton. In other words, a very appealing love interest. The romance isn’t at all a hindrance to the plot. If anything, it provides some much-needed moments of normalcy between all the running and fighting.

What is perhaps most impressive about this debut is its storyline. While there is definite room for expansion on the Branch and its work, there is a sufficient amount of detail unravelled during the book. A series of clues, and uncovering these, form the basis for the plot, and are very cleverly handled. Better yet, this book is completely unpredictable. Several plot twists caught me by surprise, leaving me literally wide-eyed and open-mouthed. There is nothing better than a story that delivers.

Do not make the mistake of thinking Altered is a dystopian book. It is not. Consider it, instead, a light thriller or mystery with science-fiction elements. Also expect a substantial (but not overwhelming) emphasis on the romance – a romance that is not without teenage angst. I think anticipating the right things here is crucial to enjoying this book. I certainly had a lot of fun with it and greatly look forward to the next instalment!

Ever since she was a little girl Anna has known about them. The boys that live in her secret basement lab. The boys are Sam, Nick, Trev and Cas. Sam is the leader, Nick is the asshole, Trev is the smart one, and Cas is the funny one with the bottomless stomach. Anna considers them friends, family. That is until one day when the Branch decides to take the boys away from the lab and the boys come out of their cages, escaping and killing every single one who dares to block their path. Anna's father begs the boys to take Anna with them, and so the mystery begins. Sam is determined to uncover his past, and he is taking everybody along for the ride.

The characters were all very endearing. Specially Cas and Trev. I just really liked them. Sam was all broody and obsessed with discovering his hidden memories, Anna was pretty much just along for the ride. She was pretty cool too, artistic and at times unexpected. The romance in this novel is a little, hard to believe? Though not really? It's like yeah this girl has a crush on this guy, but said guy doesn't seem very into this girl, but then they are kissing and you are supposed to believe he digs her? The L word was never explicitly exchanged between the guilty parties, thank god because that would have been ridiculous. But this is a series so the hopes for a more elaborate romantic story line are still high!

The twists and turns? Unexpected and entertaining. I didn't uncover anything before the time was due. Every time a secret was revealed was like a bomb was dropped on us and you just go "wow! No way!", but as a matter of fact, way.

As for the second novel the end was pretty tight up with no unresolved issues, not really. Though I could see where a second novel could develop I think the author didn't want to leave too many things unexplained just in case the second novel didn't happen. I think it should happen. Heck I'd definitely read it!

This is one I recommend. Full of originality which is sorely lacking in other YA novels these days, and definitely worth every cent.(less)

Some people have weaknesses for sparkly vampires, intense longing gazes, and obnoxious ~~bickering~~ bantering. Mine are high octane chase sequences, shoot em up fight scenes, and actually, conspiracy thrillers of any kind - so to say Altered is right up my alley is kinda an understandment. This is another hard book to review though, because some stuff I initially had problems with are actually explained quite well by later plot twists, so I can say yes this or that aspect bothered me, but I can't say how it's resolved or why I'm satisfied. Take for example Anna living for years with four guys in her basement, right away that's something I can tell is not normal and at least morally questionable if not criminal, but the way Anna handles it by being the willing participant is... naive to say the least. Sure, she's home schooled, but even with her (blind) trust in what her father's doing, I find it hard to believe she wouldn't have second thoughts about the morality of the project. And her naivete not only had me questioning the premise but is also a running theme through the book, even after she and the guys break out and go on the run, she's the innocent character - a bit too innocent given the entire situation for my tastes. In any other review, I would've left it at that and it'd be part of the reason why the book didn't work for me, but in Altered's case at least, there's a really good explanation for it! I just can't say, unfortunately, except Anna really grows as a character as she learns more about herself.

There are some things though that doesn't come with a good explanation, things that I really feel are like rookie mistakes that should've been caught and edited out. Right off the bat, the guys steal a car from this small town they're in, then use the GPS system to guide them to the location of a safe house. Uh, not smart, how hard is it for the bad guys to figure out their fugitives are gonna be driving the one car that'll be reported stolen from this small town, then track it down using the GPS? And these guys are supposed to be incredibly good at spy stuff? And they wonder why the bad guys catch up to them? Yeah. And as Anna and the guys are on the road, chasing down clues Sam had previously planted, there are a couple of times I felt the group was doubling back because they had previously missed obvious clues (like having to inspect Sam's tattoo two or three times to get all the information they should've gotten the first go around) or not figuring out some very obvious stuff immediately and dismissing it with a 'hey this looks vaguely familiar but I'm not sure how' remark which only made it more frustrating to read.

Despite that, I really enjoyed the chase. Even though the guys all have amnesia and Sam only vaguely knows what the endgame is, at least there is an endgame, so I have to say I really enjoyed myself putting together the pieces of the puzzle as Anna and the guys are searching for clues and doing the same, no matter how inefficiently they do it. And even though head villain Connor's ultimate agenda isn't revealed until the end, enough of it is dropped throughout the book that he and his Branch organization feel like a genuine threat rather than just one of those nameless faceless corrupt government organizations that just wants the protagonists dead for no reason other than just because. So my reaction whenever his agents pop up and start shooting isn't 'oh come on!' but 'crap what are they doing now?' - and that's really the key that takes the chase sequences, shootouts, safe houses, and dead informants to the next level beyond just mind candy, because after every action packed confrontation, I'll learn something new and another piece of the puzzle'll be filled in. Really, that's all you need to keep me entertained - make sure all the twists work.

Last and quite surprising thing is that, for a thriller, Jennifer Rush actually takes the time to write four distinct characters. Yeah, they start out being based on generic stereotypes, Sam's the leader, Nick's the bad one, Trev is the smart best friend, Cas is the funny sidekick, and for Nick at least his back story is predictable to the point of being transparent, but it works, and not just because they're a good group. Anna has four very different relationships with each one, and if I were to say what happens between Nick and Anna or Trev and Anna is predictable and trite, I'd be lying. Both times. Because as it turns out, along the way, if one of them lands in trouble or gets shot, I don't even have to ask myself would I care, because I do. And when one of them does something really unexpected, I care too.

From the summary, I could imagine Altered going a number of ways, but I really like the way Jennifer Rush takes it - an action packed thriller with a smidge of science fiction. Definitely an intense ride that totally works its premise.(less)

What a book.. literally read it in one sitting.. that good. Jennifer Rush has delivered a heart-stopping, adrenaline pumping book that keeps you at the edge of your seat !

Jennifer Rush’s debut novel delivered on that count with exceptional ease. It is brimming with heart-racing action, unexpected twists, romance, entertaining and engaging characters and the mysteries laced throughout the action added suspense, producing nail-biting moments. It is a fast-paced story, cleverly crafted, to form an overall fresh and exciting novel.

The most notable aspect about Altered is its plot-line. While the Branch organization and the characters could use more improvement, the steady unfolding of revelations and events is a perfect distraction from that minor fault. There is never a dull moment, and the unpredictable plot twists and intense ending left me shocked, surprised and at the edge of my seat. The dynamic world building had me completely engrossed and, at times, it felt as if I was running from Branch agents or dodging gunfire right alongside the characters. Ms. Rush definitely did a superb job in delivering a solid storyline without gaping holes.

Sam, Nick, Cas and Trev don’t remember anything from their past lives, their memories a black hole. They have been locked up in Anna’s basement and are nothing more than the Branch’s guinea pigs for tests overseen by her dad. The four boys are the most diverse element of this story. They all have distinct personalities, which makes it impossible not to be intrigued by their characters. Sam is the quiet protector, Nick is fearless and vigilant, Cas is whimsical and fun-loving and Trev is friendly and warm-hearted. Each has layers to his personality, and yet, despite their contrasts, still form a loyal bond with one another. Everything about them, from their thought processes to their interactions with Anna to their individual pasts, is enjoyable and fascinating. However, more details about them wouldn’t have hurt, especially in the beginning. Nonetheless, it is easy to appreciate their characters and quickly fall in love with them.

Anna is a very likeable character but at times, also, frustrating. My frustration stems from Anna’s inability to believe the obvious truth, and her disregard to four boys being locked up in a basement. I didn’t care much for Anna in the start but through the story’s progression, she grew on me and showed great potential to be a worthy heroine. Her relationship with Sam, on the other hand, is more appreciable. At first, it’s difficult to enjoy the romantic plot, since it is slow to pick up, but it manages to eventually evolve into something more discernible by the end of the book. Sam is a very pleasing (and hot! ;p) love interest, making the romantic angst all the more fun. Although, the romance isn’t the focal point, Sam and Anna’s relationship provides a necessary calm amongst all the action. I can’t wait to read more about this distinct duo!

It is with ease that I can say, I completely enjoyed reading Altered. It is a great thriller that had me turning pages long into the night. The minor faults are easy to ignore in face of all the good. From the characters to the romance, nothing was out of place – like I mentioned before, a perfect balance. I am highly anticipating the next installment, so I can get another taste of this gripping science-fiction world!

The beginning didn't start out so well, I have to say. Anna, the main character, had a voice that blended with all the voices of typical YA heroines. I wasn't really impressed by her. She seemed a bit dull and not very well characterized at first, but I guess centering your whole life around a lab does that to you. Fortunately, her development throughout the book was gradual and believable. I grew to like her as a person by the end of it and not many characters even achieve that these days. What can I say, I'm becoming an utter Grinch when it comes to books lately. I barely enjoy anything anymore.

Sam didn't quite do it for me though. I never really grew to like him, or even care about him as the story went on. I just couldn't wrap my mind around the idea of Anna being infatuated with him. What she even saw in him remains a mystery so far. There is not a single quality that I can attach to Sam's character confidently. Perhaps only him being serious and completely devoid of any emotion. This is why I didn't really understand the romance, or whatever it is Anna and Sam had. No chemistry at all, in my opinion. It was completely annoying to see Anna drool and fantasize about this guy, who barely even noticed her at all. I have to say these two might actually be one of the worst couples I've read about in YA lately.
I liked all the other guys, though. Even Nick was more fleshed out than Sam, really. Cas was my favorite character in the whole novel, for two obvious reasons: 1. He was utterly hilarious and 2. He loved food. What more can you ask for, really?

I liked the almost original concept this book had. It was refreshing to hear a plot about an obscure organization founded by the government, whose projects involve genetically altered boys for equally obscure motives. It does sound intriguing and the book managed to keep me interested and invested in the story. I loved every twist and revelation, how each of them gradually unfolded the characters' past.

I though of rating this book 3.5 stars first but then I thought, what the hell, I still enjoyed it immensely despite its evident flaws. So four stars, it is!

Update: I think I'll leave it to three stars, because well, the flaws were abundant in this book.(less)

Yeah, doesn't seem terribly sincere there. And, really, except for the weak 'romance' between Anna and Sam, this is a very 'tell' book. Beyond that, the line editing is clunky and awkward at a lot of points. I would have given this book 3 stars, if not for the terrible writing.

The 'romance' was far too forced. It annoyed me from the very start. Anna jumps in early with the angst and doesn't let go. Her very first thought about Sam oh so very tortured and sad. I really don't have any patience for characters that try and tug at my heartstrings before I've even gotten to know them. It makes the whole thing seem quite melodramatic.

Anna of the last few pages wasn't too bad, but she basically a useless lump throughout the book, just a dead weight to be dragged around by the boys. I could have done with a few more female characters, too. We get only three named female characters besides Anna: one a 'bitchy' stereotype that does nothing, one sticks around for two chapters and then dies, and one is a bit character. Not a great track record. I really hate it when books aimed at girls, with girl protagonists, still stuff all their active roles with male characters.

And the ending, god, the ending! The final few reveals made the whole thing just creepy as all get out. I was iffy on the age difference between Sam and Anna to begin with, but it wasn't too bad, especially given all the weirdness. But that reveal? All I could think of was "ew, ew, ew, so he knew her as an itty pre-teen and then basically molded her into being like her big sister and *then* fell in love with her?" Shades of child-grooming there, author, and I don't think you meant to do that.

On the whole, this book left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm not the least big curious about any sequels. (less)

Altered is a well written story that can be enjoyed by a variety of readers. Action, suspense, romantical tension and plot twists keep you engaged and on edge. The Sci-Fi elements are entertaining and not the least bit overwhelming. As a non-Sciency person, a book that makes me think too hard or causes my brain to hurt is one I will zone out of in about five minutes.

These characters are interesting and I found Anna, the MC, to be a good mix of innocence and strength. We get watch her go from a naive girl who has no clue of what's really happening with the boys to a bad-ars young woman who faces challenges head on and stops at nothing to protect the ones she cares about. *fist bumps her* All four of the guys, yes, four, are physically appealing (code for "hot"), but also posses qualities that make them unique and completely "crushworthy".

Sam is tall, dark and broodish, managing to hide both his secrets and his pain pretty well. He's the one Anna feels most connected too and is convinced she's in love with. Their relationship is complicated from the start and thankfully doesn't fall into the, "Instantaneous love affair at the first chance of freedom." trap. Even though they spent almost every day together for years, and there's a definite attraction, the issues that arise while they're hiding from The Branch will leave Anna wondering if Sam is the "Sam" she thinks she knows (and loves) at all.

The other guys, Trev and Nick are a yummilicious blend of brains, brawn and bravado but my favorite is Cas. *sighs* He's full of snark and fun and his obsession with food resembles a hilarious misguided love affair. He's hardly ever still and seems a bit scatter-brained but when he's needed, he's all focus and brute force. Unless, he's hungry. Then you're on your own. JK! (I wonder if Jenn would let me borrow Cas too? You know, as long as I promise to return him without any jelly doughnut stains.)

This really was a fun read (even if my heart ached for these characters at times) and it ended in a way that was satisfying but also left me eager for the next book! I'm a visual person and being able to "see" the story's setting and/or characters through the author's eyes takes the reading experience to a whole new level. Jenn has an Altered pinterest page where she's pinned pictures of what the boys look like (Anna too). Just try not to drool all over your screen, I hear it's not good for it. ;) (less)

I’d seen this book around, but hadn’t heard much about it. But when it was offered to me for review, I looked at the shirtless boy on the cover and went “oh all right.” Don’t even look at me like that.

So I put it on my Nook, opened to the first page for that indecisive browsing thing I do right before I start a book. And when I got to the words “the boys” in the first paragraph, I was intrigued, by the time it got to the lab and the setup of it, I realized what this secretly was. But when it was offered to me for review, I looked at the shirtless boy on the cover and went “oh all right.” Don’t even look at me like that.

So I put it on my Nook, opened to the first page for that indecisive browsing thing I do right before I start a book. And when I got to the words “the boys” in the first paragraph, I was intrigued, by the time it got to the lab and the setup of it, I realized what this secretly was. Jennifer crack. It’s like Jennifer Rush (the name linkage must have something to do with it) burrowed into my brain and created the ultimate situation that would make me fall in love with a book at first sight. Aka have a lot of hot boys running around.

There’s sexy alpha-male leader Sam with the sexy tree tattoo on his back alà the cover. Trev, the lit nerd and best friend boy. Cas is the snotty, but hilarious brother type and Nick who is so so cranky but somehow sexy in his own cranky way. Four boys who are like brothers, but aren’t, and the girl who’s cared for them set off on a fast-paced race to find out the truth. And the way they all worked together was just magical. It was very much a pack mentality without them, you know, being werewolves or something. I promise they aren’t werewolves. However, this whole setup hooked it’s little claws me and the only thing I did Christmas Day was to read this book. No, seriously.

Then there’s the twisty-turnyness of everything. At various points, I squealed and actually shouted “OH, FREAKING* SNAP!” out loud to an empty room. It’s a strange thing where all the things I guessed with this book haven’t been proven (yet) but I didn’t at all foresee any of the shocking revelations that did happen. I’m hesitant to mention anything here because I don’t want to give anything away on this amazing plot. But I’ll say this, there’s mystery but there’s also action, gunfights, car jacking all the meanwhile absolutely no one can really trust another, let alone themselves.

For the most part the whole year-til-the-next-book thing doesn’t really bother me (hey, I got enough to read!) but this is a book where my eyes get big, I cock my head and tap my nails in the ultimately irritated fashion at the idea of twelve more months before I can get more delicious Nick, Sam, Trev and Cas. Reality is cruel.

Altered was definitely a very pleasant surprise for me. It's always such a lovely treat whenever I encounter a paranormal book with a fantastic, unpredictable plot yet with very likable characters. Not to mention, a number of hot, hot, hot boys. Altered was such an amazing and fantastic read. I enjoyed almost every part of it (especially Cas!).

And yes, I do think the Merrick brothers have finally found their competition. I remember Brigid Kemmerer saying something about the boys here too...

Anna was a character I appreciated quite a lot. She appears to be a bit vulnerable but she has very real and honest personality. What I admire most about her though was the genuineness of her relationship with the boys. She may not be a very kick-ass heroine and though sometimes, she tends to seem a bit of the damsel in distress, her faults and flaws where overshadowed by how much she treasures and loves Sam, Cas, Trev and even Nick. In the end it was her loyalty and love for the boys that pushed her to be brave and strong and do some pretty kick-ass moves too.

Now the boys. Let's start with Sam. He was aloof, mysterious, a bit standoffish but he was a great leader and friend. It was actually the opposite of what I had imagined of him but I still end up really liking his character. He seems so serious and distant most of the time but he always took great care of everyone. Nick was the gorgeous bad-boy in the group. He was rude to Anna and seems to really dislike her. He had a very bad and awful past that forced him to have that kind of attitude and thinking. Trev was the levelheaded, rational and smart one among the boys. He had a close relationship with Anna and considers him her best friend. He loves to read books and always ready to give advice and quotes for Anna. He was a character that was so easy to like and trust but... And last but not the least, my favorite, CAS! He was an easy-going, laid back kind of guy who never seems to get his stomach full, always demanding for food but he was also very sweet, funny and really really charming. He was the kind of friend that you would need when everything is just too intense and overwhelming. Who would make you laugh and put a smile on your face when thing started to feel too stressful. I remember asking Jennifer if I can have him and she said HE said YES!

As for the plot, I just loved it! I love how it mixes some mysteries and actions.I enjoyed how they try to figure out what really happened through the small clues they had. It was fascinating and what made it more really good was the unpredictability of it. It was hard to guess or calculate what's gonna come out and what's gonna happen next so all you'll be able to do was just to continue reading. I just have some slight issue with the romance although I still enjoyed it and I do think that Anna and Sam were really great couple. However it was just that I wish a few more convictions were added that it was indeed real since it was hard not to worry that it might just have been caused by the alterations. But we're only on the first book so I think I can oversee it and I'm sure more explanations and developments will come of the following books.

Overall, Jennifer Rush did an amazing job in delivering us a story with such fantastic yet unpredictable plot, awesome action-packed scenes, shocking twists and discoveries and lovely but amazing characters. I enjoyed it very much and I'll be sure to have an eye on this series. I highly recommend this.

From the beginning, I was a bit biased about the story because I love strong heroines and groups of guys. Not necessarily romantically involved but the relationships between one girl and a lot of guys is always so much more involving than stories with all guys or stories with many girls and many guys.

And it drew me in too. And I found myself being enthralled by the relationship, their inevitable escape and the development of the book.

But I found myself becoming less and less ecstatic about the way the second half the book's romance evolved. I felt like the romance between Sam and Anna was much more of a liability and they should have tried harder to fight against it, instead of just being automatically in love with each other. Plus it kept getting them into trouble when they were preoccupied with other things... sometimes i just wanted to say can you guys not stare at each other soulfully while there are a bunch of bullets waiting to bury themselves in your backsides? Also towards the end, Sam kind of. Just lost his charm? Became the typical must do everything for girl blah blah character.

Also I know this isn't the author's fault, but the characters felt a little stereotypical for me. Typical brooding leader, the smart one, the childish one, the dark one- they all felt a little too typecast in their characters. I mean, who didn't see Nick's violent past from a hundred miles away? If this was the first time I had encountered such characters and I had read this book a few years ago, I would have loved them all. But they weren't, and I can't help but be impatient as I read about Cas being crazy for food or Nick being moody or even Sam being mysterious for the hundredth time.

That being said, other than the weak romance and character development, I loved the other parts of the book. The action was great, the little mystery solving was also fun. It was such an easy breezy read and pushed me to finish reading it, instead of me having to force myself to finish.

I really hope the cover changes for the final cover. Not so down for the half nekkid boy on the front.

I had no idea what to expect when I opened ALTERED by Jennifer Rush; I just knew that the summary sounded really good. I had just finished two other incredible books, so I was hesitant to start one I hadn't heard much about yet for fear I would be disappointed, but I had no reason to be worried with ALTERED. I was hooked on this heart-pounding story from the first page. Once I started, I didn't want to stop reading. This was a one day read for me because it was so action-packed and surprising that I just wanted to keep going to find out what was actually happening until the very end. ALTERED has all the best of the medical alterations sci-fi intrigue, secret organization, on-the-run types of stories, with a uniquely interesting backstory of how these boys and Anna got there.

ALTERED is an addictively good, completely intriguing story. I loved the journey I was taken on from the start of learning about the lab, to the escape, to being on the run, to the mystery of their past, to the unexpected reveals, to the relationships built and broken and repaired, to the place the characters are left at the end. Jennifer Rush has given the reader an exciting blend of family drama, relationship building, hot boys, guns and weapons, action-packed fighting sequences, mystery, suspense, and outmaneuvering of the organization chasing them. There were several scenes when I literally gasped out loud. The whole group of core characters has a dynamic that is endearing, and their interactions are so engaging. Love those boys! ALTERED is a twisty novel full of gasp-worthy moments, action, loveable characters, and a little bit of a romance to tie it all together.

I'm so glad to hear that there will be another book following this one! There is a definite ending, so I wasn't sure because it could have been that this story is complete, but it is left at a spot that had me hoping there would be more time with these characters and more to discover at this point in their story. I'll be anxiously awaiting the follow-up book from Jennifer Rush to spend more time with Anna, Sam, and the boys!(less)

Girl packs a kick ass mean punch. I mean, I loved that she didn't even take flack from Nick, who isn't her biggest fan, and that she was able to stick up for herself and didn't need the boys. There were a few things that were kind of icky, but I won't talk about them since they give a few plot points away. (Damn you authors with good books that are hard to review!)

I really liked this plot and the whole premise of the creation of the boys and how every one of them was related to each other. What I'm really excited for in the next book (and yes, there will be more boys) and how all of their crazy decisions are going to come back and bite them in their (very hot) asses.

Wow. This review seems totally boy crazy, which I'm not. I'm in a very happy committed relationship, but I mean, really. As a final note, this book passes my insta-love test since the boys all knew Anna since she was 13 and have therefore been building their friendships with her, so no insta-love! I adored this book, and the boys, and I can't wait for the next instalment. There is a lot of action and fighting and so much going on in it that it is a great, fast paced read.(less)

Picture this: all those YA hot brother team ups, mix in some lost memory in the same vein as Jason Bourne’s only here it’s times four and they’re younger (I assume.) then even more interesting: skills unexpected coming making themselves known at the most convenient of time! That last bit might have you think me being so-over-this since everything I’ve mentioned so far, have been tackled at one point or another, either separately or all together in some fashion. Yet, surprise! I hooked me in.

Eunice’s Merrick comparison was what got me to push this up because the cover alone was doing nothing for me. It’s a little too much like the opening credits of a TV show I refuse to admit having salivated over even when said show got cheesy. I also refuse to comment over the striking resemblance between the cover model and the aforesaid TV show's smoking hot alpha lead, either. See? I refuse. I refuse. I refuse. But really… beyond the hot boys and the mysterious air going on for him and the rest of them, the story itself was not badly done. (at least when it counted.)

She’s goody-goody but with a pinch of rule breaker in her: doing most everything right unless we discount this little thing she does on her own time. She’s interesting I suppose, but all alone without the rest of the guys in the picture there’s really not that much to her: girl missing her mommy, feeling that lack more clearly with a father who’s not as present as she’d want. Then take things up a notch and have her be girl in love with boy of unknown dark past variety Unknown... and there’s the kicker. See, with him in the picture, we were getting somewhere.

As subject of her desire, you’d think she’d wax poetic about his attributes… but see, there’s not that much to wax on about. There’s really next to nothing known! And that’s fine too as each thing she discovers was truly a discovery for all parties involved. I really liked that aspect of the story. Well, that as well as the fact that the hot boy team up in this one was so complete in a way that there’s one of every kind you might fancy: a hot one, a surly one, a sweet/smart one and a funny one. I was happy with that… ‘til I realized things were feeling more and more like an introduction. We know so much about one of them and next to nothing about the rest, a fact I’m hoping will be remedied by follow ups for the other boys, yes?

Anyhoot.. I liked the hot boy team up and her as plus one, because there’s this obvious connection that’s more than you think. In fact, there’s a lot of “more than you think’s” in this one. With the next reveal feeling bigger than what had preceded it. Then those face offs and the gun battles, all very cool in execution evidence by me having some serious Matt Damon as Jason Bourne flashbacks as I was reading.

Bottom line? This was Fun!
