Altered is one of those books that are highly addicting, with action that engrosses you until you become quite satisfied with the read. But, there are particulars that nagged at me which, individually, are irrelevant, but together, they become a little too bothersome to simply forgive and forget.

The whole story in Altered consists of a chase. These modified humans have escaped their prison, and, bringing Anna with them, are on the run from her father's employers. Throughout this run we get clues...more

Somewhere between a 3.5 and 4...

Jennifer Rush’s debut novel was initially pitched as Dollhouse meets Prison Break, a brief description that isn’t too inaccurate at all. Although it isn’t quite that good, I still had a stellar time reading this book and appreciated every nail-biting moment and edge-of-my-seat scene of action. The plot is clever and unpredictable, but nothing too taxing, and the characters are an entertaining and engaging bunch. This is good, very good, but not without a few mino...more

Now THAT was good and original with a hint of Maximum Ride (by James Patterson) to give it some good measure. And when I mention Maximum Ride I am talking about the series' glory days and not about the last few horrid adds.

Anyways, I dived into Altered with no expectations what so ever. I mean, the summary seemed cool but the cover made my stomach turn over on itself. It is just not pleasant. UPDATE They updated the cover and now it looks much much bett...more

Some people have weaknesses for sparkly vampires, intense longing gazes, and obnoxious bickering bantering. Mine are high octane chase sequences, shoot em up fight scenes, and actually, conspiracy thrillers of any kind - so to say Altered is right up my alley is kinda an understandment. This isn't the best I've ever read, these are not entirely competent characters and there are scenes that had me muttering 'no no no why the heck would you do that?', but overall I'm still quite satisfied by the...more

Altered is an engaging sci-fi debut with action, mystery, and romance.

Anna and her dad monitor and administrate treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys outside of their confinement they -along with Anna- make an escape and find themselves on the run...

What a book.. literally read it in one sitting.. that good. Jennifer Rush has delivered a heart-stopping, adrenaline pumping book that keeps you at the edge of your seat !

The storyline: Original, definitely not a predictable storyline that I have read countless times before. It had a similar feel to Sarah Alderson's "Hunting Lila" in that there are people chasing them who do crazy experiments on people with enhanced abilities. I give the plot two thumbs up, as it kept me eager to know more. The...more

Four years ago, Anna discovered a secret her father was keeping in their basement…

Boys.

Four of them.

Every teenage girl’s dream, right?

Except these boys are different. Genetically Altered and suffering from apparent amnesia. They’re all part of a puzzle Anna’s only been given small pieces to.

Dad wouldn’t tell me what the program tested for, despite my repeated questioning. When I’d first found the lab, it was all I could think about. What were four boys doing in our basement? Where were

I had no idea I'd enjoy this book so much. As such, this review will probably be a rambling mess, so you’ll have to excuse me. I’m still fangirling.

Okay, moving on.

Anna, our protagonist, lives with her dad in a small New York town called Treger Creek. Her father, Arthur, works for the 'Branch' and is in charge of a secret project that is located underneath their farmhouse. The project consists of four genetically altered boys (men?): Sam, Cas, Nick, and Trev. Each of them differ in personality,...more

Altered was a nice surprise, I didn't expect to be hooked up with the story ... 'cause honestly, the story of a group of kids genetically altered to become the perfect soldiers was anything BUT original. We've seen it before a thousand times!!!

Nice uppercut Captain America!!

Anna works in a lab with his father, for an organization called "The Branch". Four boys are being held prisoners in the lab, subjected to some tests and experiments. None of them remember who they are, anything abou...more

It’s only once in a while when a book manages to blow me off my feet – not because it had no faults but rather for its ability to balance all aspects of its genre. Jennifer Rush’s debut novel delivered on that count with exceptional ease. It is brimming with heart-racing action, unexpected twists, romance, entertaining and engaging characters and the mysteries laced throughout the action added suspense, producing nail-biting moments. It is a fast-paced story, cleverly crafted,...more

This book was quite the entertaining ride. While in itself it wasn't highly extraordinary, I still enjoyed reading it. It was full of action, thrilling and exciting and it never left you bored. Even though the characters were likable enough, it was the well executed plot that made this book easy to read and enjoy.

The beginning didn't start out so well, I have to say. Anna, the main character, had a voice that blended with all the voices of typical YA heroines. I wasn't really impressed by her. S...more

This book was such a hot mess of cliches, bad writing, and semi-good ideas. While some of it was enjoyable (the plot was like Bourne Identity for Beginners, fun but not too complex), the rest of it was just irritating.

The writing was downright cringe-worthy. It could be used as a textbook on 'show, don't tell.' I swear, she used the line "I still felt guilty [over the death of a bit character]." When she can go on and on and on about her dreams about Sam, about her plans for the future, about h...more

Well, this was a pleasant surprise! I'd had this book for two months from the library and I finally picked it up with two days until it was due back (I'd ran out of renewals, even). Figured I'd give it a shot. Welp, I couldn't put it down.

Admittedly, I don't read much YA anymore, but Altered felt new and fresh and unique in a way so few YA books do for me. The plot was fast paced, exciting, intriguing and kept me turning the pages. The characters were flawed, but likable. I really love...more

Thank you to the awesome Jenn Rush for loaning me a copy of her fantastic debut! Altered is a book that has been on my radar for a few months and I'm sooo excited to have been able to read an ARC of it! The original cover is what piqued my curiosity - hot guy, interesting synopsis but like the boys themselves, it too has been altered and now looks even cooler with the tree which is a vital part of the story. (pun completely intended)

Altered is a well written story that can be enjoyed...more

i love the book because of its strong story and plot. the writer nailed the story by such awesome, strong characters who had a clear cut idea of what they want and would get it no matter what. the lead character Sam is a mature young man who suffered so much on the hand of people that he stopped trusting them and would get his deserved freedom at any cost. he is a splitting image of how a mature young man should be. the other main characters who suffered along side him, in different way show the...more

I’d seen this book around, but hadn’t heard much about it. But when it was offered to me for review, I looked at the shirtless boy on the cover and went “oh all right.” Don’t even look at me like that.

So I put it on my Nook, opened to the first page for that indecisive browsing thing I do right before I start a book. And when I got to the words “the boys” in the first paragraph, I was intrigued, by the time it got to the lab and the setup of it, I realized what this secretly was. Jennifer crack....more

I started Altered after a serious case of book burn, when I needed to read something fast paced and fun. Thankfully, that's exactly what I got from this book, as well as four genetically altered guys who are all channeling Jason Bourne.

The set-up
Anna lives with her father in a farmhouse in rural New York. It's the type of place where nothing much happens, except that you never know what's going on below the surface. Literally. Underneath Anna's house is a lab where her father monitors and tests...more

So here is what I was expecting - A fast paced, action packed and adrenalin pumping adventure full of mystery, intrigue and romance.
I was not expecting this book to be so "YA." Just based on the sexy, shirtless, tattooed guy on the cover I was expecting a much more "mature" book.

Unfortunately what I got was a very pg13 version of the overplay "secret government agency is making super soldiers" plot. And unfortunately for the first three quarters of the book that plot just barely plodde...more

Altered was definitely a very pleasant surprise for me. It's always such a lovely treat whenever I encounter a paranormal book with a fantastic, unpredictable plot yet with very likable characters. Not to mention, a number of hot, hot, hot boys. Altered was such an amazing and fantastic read. I enjoyed almost every part of it (especially Cas!).

And yes, I do think the Merrick brothers have finally found their competition. I remember Brigid Kemmerer saying something about the boys here too...

From the beginning, I was a bit biased about the story because I love strong heroines and groups of guys. Not necessarily romantically involved but the relationships between one girl and a lot of guys is always so much more involving than stories with all guys or stories with many girls and many guys.

And it drew me in too. Jennifer Rush really had a great idea here, genetic engineering super strong guys being kept in a basement while one girl has to take care of them- premise for a great story!...more

I had no idea what to expect when I opened ALTERED by Jennifer Rush; I just knew that the summary sounded really good. I had just finished two other incredible books, so I was hesitant to start one I hadn't heard much about yet for fear I would be disappointed, but I had no reason to be worried with ALTERED. I was hooked on this heart-pounding story from the first page. Once I started, I didn't want to stop read...more

Favorite. No doubt. Altered is one of my favorite books of all times. The action, suspense and oh, the romance. It all has you floating in the air seeing stars and rainbows. Okay, maybe not rainbows and stars. More like escaping and trying to stay alive. The action in Altered is amazing and I loved every. Single. Part. Of. It.

I dont even know where to begin this book. For starters just look at the cover. Look at how hot the boy on the cover is. And to be honest, all of the four boys are just as hot. Just wow, I don't even know how Anna kept her hands off these handsome men. I would have been all "YOU MUST BE LONELY!" Ugh, girlfriend is lucky.

Anyway, I loved the boys in this book, each one of them clearly has their own personality, and I loved that each one of them stood out despite being hot replicas of each other. I...more

Full disclosure here. When I was at BEA this summer, I wanted this book…bad. Why?

Did you see the cover?

Yes, I admit. I’m a total cover h00r. And this one is beautiful. Then I read the summary and knew I would be hooked. This book was non-stop, heart-palpitating, cannotbelievethatjusthappened action, and I think you will love it.

For a debut book, I found Altered to be highly addictive. But in order to enjoy the book I had to suspend all disbelief with the amount of plot holes I was presented with.

Basic Plot:

Anna is the daughter of a scientist. For years she's been monitoring her father's secret basement lab that confines four boys: San, Trev, Cas and Nick. The boys are part of an experiment by a secretive group called the Branch. Anna doesn't know why her father is doing this or why the Branch is funding these experimen...more

I’m still trying to get a clear picture of the time and age and the obvious gap there between the characters… but that’s about all I can complain of in this one. ALTERED was an entertaining read, different in the same the same way that PARTIALS and Krokos’ LOST MEMORY were different. Wait, does that mean it’s not that different after all? Ye… ergh, does it matter? I was thoroughly entertained by them and the set up… even if there were gaping holes that had me wondering about things just lik...more

When I first came across this book it was described by someone as Doll House meets Prison Break. From that point I knew I had to read it and was eagerly anticipating it. It's a nice sci-fi action adventure. It was one of those books where the main characters are on the run and in hiding throughout. This book was impossible to put down. Figuring out the mysteries behind identities and the reasons why it all happened was what really kept me glued to the pages. I'm giving this 4 stars because it wa...more
