Silly, great fun.

A few feeder bands from a hurricane hits Duck as hard as many full-on tropical systems, catching the residents off-guard. Psychic mayor Dae O'Donnell begins the storm by trying to contact her dead mother with medium friend Shayla. Later, she will find that an ancestor has responded, but it isn't her Mom. Meantime, Dae hurries ot help host a regional mayor's conference being held at Kevin's hotel. The storm blows out the power and a few windows. When the lights come back, Dae re...more

Cozy mystery fans are sure to love this series by Joyce and Jim Lavene. I understand that this is the third book in the series, but it made a fine stand-alone read.

The story is set in Duck, North Carolina where Dae O'Donnell is Mayor of the tiny town. Dae has the ability to find lost objects and to get images from antiques she acquires for her shop, Missing Pieces. Dae lives with her Grandfather, the retired Police Chief of the town. Two additional characters include Shayla, a psychic medium th...more

The conference is just getting started when a severe storm moves in, forcing everyone to hunker down at the inn, which is owned by her boyfriend Kevin Brickman. After the storm, Dae finds a ring belonging to Mayor Sandi Foxx. Dae has a gift that enables her to find lost things others are looking for as well as learning about missing objects by touching them. When Dae picks up Sandi’s...more

A Spirited Gift by Joyce and Jim Lavene

This is the first book that I have read written by this dynamic partnership. Dae is the mayor of Duck, North Carolina and has planned a weekend convention of nearby mayors. Dae also has a gift. Until recently, she could return lost items to their owners, simply by touching the owners or the lost item.

In addition, she believes that it may be possible to contact spirits and has been attempting to contact her mother each year on the anniversary of her death....more

This novel has us following pirates, chasing murderers, enduring hurricane bands, rebuilding Duck, NC, and dealing with personal issues like finding lost Fathers, and do you really know your boyfriend?

Our sleuth, Dae O'Donnell, the Mayor of Duck, NC, is busy trying to contact her Mother's spirit on the anniversary of her death. Mother doesn't come through, however, some unusual 'spirit balls' do and cause a sense of dread in Dae. However, Dae hasn't time to dwell on the lack of communication as...more

Always trying to be innovative, Dae O'Donnell hosts twenty North Carolina town administrators at the first (and hopefully annual) Mayors' Conference Weekend at the Blue Whale Inn in Duck.

But a rainstorm that unexpectedly turns into a hurrican strands the visitors on the island. The next morning, Dae finds one of the mayors, former news anchor Sandi Foxx, dead in the rubble of the inn's toolshed.

Having found Sandi's ring a few hours earlier, and receiving a vision of Sandi being threatened with a...more

This is the third book in the Missing Pieces Mystery.

Dae has got all the neighboring mayors to a conference that is being held in her town. There is a big storm/hurricane that comes up before the guests can leave and everyone is huddled in the ballroom to sit out the weather. There are no lights, (you'd think that they'd at least have a flashlight, camplight or some other battery light handy in a hotel) so no one can tell if anyone moves or not. When the storm ends, they start doing a head coun...more

The Lavenes write entertaining mysteries but this is my favourite so far. I had visited Duck, NC this summer after reading the first two books in the series and now the town is very vivid in my mind's eye. But the real fun is the ghost of a pirate who winds up haunting our heroine. I found it all very charming and light while the mysteries were still engrossing enough to keep my attention. I am pretty stingy about 5 star reviews, and I am having a hard time finding words to explain why I feel th...more

I loved a good portion of this book - the plot about avenging her ancestor was a lot of fun! And the modern day murder plot was interesting with some good twists and ties to the past. Still, I was turned off by a lot of flat dialogue. There were more than a couple of instances when I had no idea what kind of emotion the authors were trying to convey until scenes were over. An argument between Dae and Kevin was only apparent to me after one of them walked away in a huff, and arguments between Dae...more

This is the third book in the A Missing Pieces series. It's always enjoyable to visit Duck, NC and Mayor Dae and the interesting residents and this was no exception.

Mayor Dae and Duck, NC is hosting the first Mayors' Conference at the Blue Whale Inn. But as everyone is assembling for the weekends activities an unexpected hurricane comes ashore. The next morning as they are surveying the damage, Dae comes across the body of Mayor Sandi Foxx. At first it is thought that she was outside when the st...more

In Lavene’s mystery novel, Dae is hard at work hosting the first ever Mayor’s Conference Weekend at the Blue Whale Inn. After an unexpected hurricane leaves everyone stranded, Dae finds an expensive ring belonging to Mayor Sandi Foxx whose body is found later that day. After picking up on a vision through the ring of someone threatening her with a gun, Dae is convinced this is a case of murder. Whatever the cause, Dae is determined to identity the killer regardless the cost.

Dae O’Donnell is a wo...more

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first one in the series. I really think there was WAY too many stories going on in this one. THe authors threw everything at the readers with this book. There was a historical mystery, a murder from 30 years ago, the recent murders AND the introduction of Dae's dad. I wish the authors had not introduced a ghost into the whole thing. The fact Dae has visions is a stretch as it is, and now they have her seeing ghosts and it just seems to be a bit much. I...more

First Line: "I'm nervous."

Dae O'Donnell has good reason to be nervous. As mayor of Duck, North Carolina, she got the bright idea of inviting twenty small town mayors as well as their spouses and assistants to the Blue Whale Inn for her first Mayors' Conference Weekend. Unfortunately a storm got its own bright idea of becoming a hurricane and heading right for Duck, contrary to what every weather forecast predicted. With the power out and trees crashing through windows, there's little time for Da...more

I love this series. I read the first two books which were available at my local library... I was ecstatic when I heard that the third book was coming out. Hurricanes, and Murders and Pirates. Oh My!

I am also excited actually by the cliff hanger ending. It means that the authors plan to be around for the long haul, and I'm going to be right there with them, reading each book as it hits the shelves.

I was lucky enough to win an autographed copy of A Spirited Gift from a blog site giveaway.

This book held my interest through out the whole story. It had interesting people in it, and the story had a couple of twists and turns i hadn't expected, which is nice when it's not what you thought was coming next. The ending sure wasn't what I expected.....Now the next thing I would like to know is when is the next book in this series comeing out? because I would like to see how this turns out.And if you would like to know what I'm talking about it's best if you read this book. You won't be sorry...more

Another chapter in their "missing pieces" mystery series, set in Duck, NC. I love the Outer Banks, and I belong to a book club based in the Outer Banks, so whenever these authors release a new book, it's one of the book club selections. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you might be a bit lost. These are fun, quick, light reads, perfect for summer pool reading.

This series just keeps getting better. I have come to really care about the main character, Dae, and it is interesting how the Lavene's are developing her special gift (can't say more, you need to read the series). This book ended with a cliffhanger and I am so glad that I had the next book ready to read.

This book was okay. The story itself was engaging, but the writing could have used a little development. The story came across as simpler than I suspect the authors intended as a result. However, this is part of a series, and I'm interested enough to potentially look into the other books.

As a storm hits a majors conference, Dae has to deal with a murder amid the confusion. Can she help find the murderer? I'm kinda glad I don;t have a gift like she does. There is too big a chance of seeing devastation from the past.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the cliff hanger. I had to get the next one, which has an even bigger cliff hanger.

Write FAST, Joyce and Jim. I'm dying here waiting for the next book!

An excellent entry in the Missing Pieces series. Lots of surprises and plot twists. A very enjoyable read. I am anxiously awaiting Mayor O'Donnell's next Duck adventure.

Very well done. Complex stories that merged in the end. The character of pirate Rafe Masterson was well done, too.

This is the third in the Missing Pieces series. I found that the authors took a different twist with this one as they added more of a fantasy/supernatural aspect to it as well as a more complex plot. In the previous two books, I felt that events were more real. This one had a lot more going on than one simple mystery, but it was still a fun read and kept me interested in it until the very end. However, the ending was disappointing in that it adds another twist and leaves some of the plot unresol...more

A very enjoyable book. I wasn't sure if I would like the paranormal part of it, but it wasn't over done. The characters were well fleshed out. The murder kept you guessing, although dometime it seemed like the back story, rather than the main story. The ghost was quite an interesting addition to the characters, also. I will be looking for the previous ones in this series also.
Sarah
It was decent, but the least favorite of the series.

This is the third in the series and I thought it was an exciting read. There was a pirate element in this one that was fun, and there were three different mysteries being solved during the book. The storyline was nicely woven together, and there was a satisfactory conclusion, although the authors have left us with a slight cliffhanger ending. The town of Duck is nicely written too, and I would love to visit - just maybe not during storm season! This is a fun and entertaining series, and I look f...more
