Mr Falco clearly has talent, as evidenced by his long list of publications and awards. But all of the stories in this collection came up short for me. They're engaging and kept my interest, but for me there's just something fundamentally missing here. The stories felt overwrought and contrived, more like writing exercises than polished fiction. As if a student had been given a topic like "Burning Man" or "Smothered Mate" (the most transparent and cloying metaphor in the book) and was told to ...more

This reads like a first publication, and given Falco's record, that just boils down to the author being either lazy or pretentious. It's been a while since I read it, but from what I remember every focal character is described using the "mirror trick". I've read work from creative writing students who showed more ability at plot and character development.

Other than some glaringly obvious plot designs, I at least found it readable and useful in showing me that even seasoned writers can fall into
