There are rules for dealing with ghosts. Too bad Ree Hutchins doesn't know them.

When her favorite patient at a private mental hospital passes away, psychology student Ree Hutchins mourns the elderly woman's death. But more unsettling is her growing suspicion that something unnatural is shadowing her.

Amateur ghost hunter Hayden Priest believes Ree is being haunted. Even Ame...more

Grade: C or 3 Stars

A mildly entertaining novella about a vengeful ghost, buried secrets, and a psychiatric ward. It has a light romance. This story reminded me a little of an 80's film titled "A Ghost Story" although "The Abandoned" is not scary, unless you find cold drafts, foggy windows , and the feeling of being watched as a source of horror.

Ree Hutchins, a university student and mental hospital volunteer, loses an elderly patient. She overhears an ominous conversation between the head pschi...more

A prequel to the Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens. It was interesting for what it what. Because it was short there wasn't much time spent developing the characters or the romance. Basically, it just laid some ground work for the upcoming series.

I loved this prequel and I can't wait to start the series.
This story is not told from the main character's point of view (Amelia). It is the story of a female master's student, working at a psychiatric hospital part-time. She gets herself tangled up in a cover-up and she can't help but investigate it, especially with a ghost pushing her to get revenge.
It was very suspenseful and I found myself getting goose bumps during some of the ghost scenes.

This was a quick read and I'm looking forward to...more

There’s magic all around us. You just can’t see it.

I read this novella in preparation for the first book in the series, The Restorer, only to find out that the titular Graveyard Queen merely has a cameo here. Oh, well. For what it's worth, I liked this little intro, despite its obvious shortcomings, especially this passage:
“There’s a Chinese legend about hungry ghosts. Entities that devour human emotions. Spirits whose sole purpose is to sustain themselves in our realm by feeding on our warmth

Quick & Dirty: A story reflecting the consequences of opening yourself up to ghosts.

Opening Sentence: Ree Hutchins was dozing at the old woman’s bedside, a dog-eared copy of The Call of the Wild open on her lap, when Violet Tisdale passed away.

The Review:

In the past, I have been very harsh with novellas claiming to be prequel’s when the truth of that statement is in question. Yes, The Abandoned, is a prequel. It does introduce major characters in the main...more

Ree works at a mental health institution. After one of her patient's passes away, things start to get weird and her life is turned upside down as she uncovers a dark plot. Not only that, but she's been experiencing strange things -- cold spots, invisible touches, plus one of the mental patients sees something no one else can. Good thing Ree doesn't believe in ghosts.

Hayden is a different matter. While studying for the bar and working in law during the day, Hayden spends his nights as a paranorma...more

Let us just say that it is a good thing I had read book number two - or is it book number one if you do not count the prequel, I always get confused when authors do this - or I would have never continued with this series.

The Abandoned comes across more of an outline for a book then an actually novel, with no real catch or lure.

Ree Hutchins is a graduate student working in a psychiatric hospital on the evening of the death of Violet Tisdal, one of their longest residing patients. Ree is curious...more

I read, The Restorer, the first book in The Graveyard Queen series and really loved it. So I picked up this prequel freebie. While the story is good, it doesn't represent the series very well. In fact the story doesn't even follow Amelia Grey, but a side character named Ree.

Ree works at a mental hospital. When one of her patients dies she overhears some shadey secrets. Then Ree finds herself sleeping walking strange places and thinks maybe a ghost is involved. Now she has to figure out what the...more

This novella is a prequel to The Restorer (the Graveyard Queen #1) and as soon as I saw it available as ebook I had get it and read. I loved The Restorer; I have to say this prequel was little bit different than what I thought it would be. I thought it would be more about Amelia, however the story centered around Ree Hutchins psychology student, whit is volunteering at the psychiatrist hospital. The story begins with the death of a long time psychiatrist patient…

Even though this story was not a...more

I have some mixed feelings about this story. First, let me say that I loved The Restorer and I was very excited when I found out that this prequel was available. The events take place shortly before Amelia is hired to restore the old cemetery. But she isn't the main character here. This story centers on Ree, a graduate student who is interning at a psychiatric hospital. When an old patient named Violet dies, Ree is unexpectedly drawn in to the bizarre and haunting circumstances of her life and t...more

As the ebook exclusive prequel to The Graveyard Queen series, The Abandoned is a novella (66 pages) and introduces us to Ree Hutchins, a psychology grad student volunteering at a mental hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. When her favorite patient passes away while Ree is sitting next to her, an unsettling series of events begins. Ree begins to feel as though she is being followed, experiences cold chills and touches where there is no draft, and accidentally overhears evidence of a blackmail...more

Amanda Stevens manages to zero in to fear with pinpoint accuracy, and exploit it down to the bone with a chilling single-mindedness. In her debut prequel to her stunning Graveyard Queen series, Stevens casts her web to set the stage for a full complement of characters that will end up dangling from her threads.

The Abandoned and its mysteries centers on a largely decrepit cemetery adjacent to Emerson University in Charleston. For numerous years, Oak Grove Cemetery has remained abandoned

The Abandoned is a prelude to the series of Amelia who goes around restoring gravestones and avoiding ghosts. While this story had very little to do with Amelia, it still set up a bit about what she does and her special gift for seeing ghosts.

Well crafted and interesting, I felt the story could have focused a bit more on the ghosts and the haunting of Ree but it is a novella so guess there wasn't enough time to develop it more. Ree is at the beside of a woman who has been confined to a psyche ho...more

Alas, this is my last Amanda Steven's novel until the next book in the Graveyard Queen comes out. This was a short story..about 30 pages long and it was good. I don't think it quite had the intensity of her full length novels, which I absolutely devour. I also think that it was lacking in that it was almost that she was trying to write to a full length novel which one really can't do in writing a short story. There are a very small number of writers who I have been able to see pull off writing b...more

Cons: Amanda Stevens doesn't mind a cliche or three in her writing, The romance managed to be sort of engaging, and yet still lame. The other things I planned to mention actually fall under cliche, so I can't stress that enough. Nothing in the writing made me suspect that this was a published (other than self published) author until end blurb for the series that this story promotes.

Pros: I kept reading! Whatever its faults, this little ghost story kept me wanting to find out what happens next. I...more

Ree Hutchins is a volunteer at a swanky mental hospital. When one of its longtime residents passes on in her presence, it sets off a series of strange events. Ree doesn't believe in ghosts, but she is starting to have her doubts as she stumbles upon the age old secrets of the century old facility.

The Abandoned is the prequel in the Graveyard Queen series. It's a short read (66 pages) but it's enough to completely tell Ree's story and sets the stage for Book I, The Restorer (which was just relea...more

The Abandoned by Amanda Stevens is a short prequel novella introducing us to Graveyard Queen Amelia Gray for her upcoming full length novel The Restorer. I have to tell you, I'm hooked. I absolutely loved everything about this story. We are introduced to Ree Hutchins who works at a mental health facility where one of her favorite patients dies. When delivering the files to one of the doctors, she stumbles upon a blackmail scheme involving the patient who just passed. Not wanting any trouble, she...more

Ree volunteers at Emerson College in the psyche ward as part of her Masters' program. One of the patients Violet dies and when she's delivering the patient's file to the head doctor she hears something she shouldn't have. She's also being followed by a ghost which she keeping telling herself is just her imagination. She sleepwalks or is taken over by the ghost and awakes in a small college graveyard after she kissed a total stranger and took off her shirt. Hayden's looking for signs of ghosts an...more

I absolutely love love LOVED The Restorer and I finally got to read Amanda Stevens' novella, The Abandoned, prequel to The Graveyard Queen series. I'm a huge fan of Stevens' writing style - it's sexy, fluid and darkly beautiful and The Abandoned doesn't disappoint if you love her for that alone. She is an exceptional writer, a magician with words, invoking emotion and thought at her own whim. She is THE Queen of creepy.
So while I really LOVED The Restorer, I really LIKED The Abandoned, and let m...more

على العم...more

Though this is considered a prequel, it doesn't feature the main characters of the series - Amelia and Devlin - but in passing. It does however give you a peak into the world and setting of the series. A small peak, but a peak no less.

I really enjoyed both Ree and Hayden. It was interesting to get the POVs of people who can't see the ghosts but are still affected by them. And, as I found in The Restorer, Ms. Stevens writing is beautiful and vivid. I really wish Ree and Hayden show up again, be i...more

This is a prequel to the series "Graveyard Queen" and I got it as a freebie at Amazon.

While the series was about Amelia Gray, this prequel focused on this psychology graduate student Ree who volunteers at a mental hospital. Strange things began to occur when her favorite patient passed away. She met Hunter, an amateur ghost hunter through her sleepwalking event (which is a possibility of being possessed by a ghost that might be related to her favorite patient - is it the patient or is it someon...more

It is so nice to stumble upon an author and a book that you truly enjoy. "The Abandoned" is a wonderful book about a psychology grad student Ree Hutchins who volunteers at a treatment facility while working on her thesis. During her time as a volunteer she has come to enjoy the company of an elderly patient Miss Violet Tisdale. Violet has been in the facility longer than any staff member can remember.

One evening while Ree is reading to Miss Violet, she quietly passes away. While Ree attempts to...more

Wow!! This book absolutely appealed to me on so many levels! I love the characters and Stevens can invoke some real creepy shivers with her descriptive writing. I am SO looking forward to diving into the next in the series, and hope to have my sister Amanda dive in with me.

I just can't get enough of this series! Amanda Stevens is seriously becoming a favourite author of mine. I loved The Restorer and I love The Abandoned just as much too.
Amanda can write Southern Gothic with style. There is a real darkness to this book, and is just as gripping as The Restorer.

Two of the main characters from The Restorer make an appearance in this book, which takes place just after Amelia has been commissioned to work on the local graveyard, where The Restorer is set. Amelia and Dev...more

Novella length story, which is supposed to be a sort of prequel to The Restorer.
I have to admit to being disappointed in this after reading books 1 to 3.
The author chose two new characters and then connected them on the periphery with the old ones. It was rushed, lack the lustre and finesse of the other books and also seem inconsistent in parts.

Where did Ree read about what had been done to Ilsa and who was involved? The answer is she didn't. One minute we are reading records that contain hardly...more

Amanda Stevens was born and raised in the foothills of the Ozarks, an area known for its folklore and superstition. She learned from an early age to fear black cats, ladders, and broken mirrors. A risk taker, she now resides with all three. She is also the mother of twins, a wannabe taphophile, and a collector of all things Alfred Hitchcock. When she’s not writing from her home in Houston, she lik...more
