Wonderful, if longish, story!

I picked up this book, not knowing until later that it wasn’t the first in the series. With that said, it stands alone in its own right. Characters are introduced, technology is shown and explained, conflicts and history described. Everything you need to delve into the writer’s world. The main characters are fleshed out and shown all their flaws and bright spots. Interactions are believable, locations are visualized, even the relationships build and change throughout

It's rare that I enjoy a sequel more than the original book, but in this case, that is exactly what happened. Author Ren Garcia has written an epic sci-fi adventure that features all the great characters from the first League of Elder book, plus some amazing new ones. Front and center is a mischievous, caring, naive little elemental spirit who witnesses a vision of a terrible tragedy in the near future. In order to prevent it, he must nudge his closest friends and family into harm's way.

Oh, this book was so much fun to read! The second book in the "The League Of Elder" series continues the adventures of Lord and Countess of Blanchefort. But (for me) what made this book to shine was the sense of humor that Carahil and Lady Poe brought into it. (Lady Poe's "Fixed by Fins" was by far the best joke.) Carahil is an Elemental Spirit, as close as a god as one can gets. But unlike most gods, Carahil likes to make jokes and pranks all the time and made me giggle several

Another fantastic book from a Master writer, Ren Garcia. If you enjoy stories with in depth character building, insane, complex world crafting and inter-developed plot lines, then this book, the second installment in The League of Elders series, is for you. Take a chance on this series... It will not be a mistake.

I love Ren’s work, he is a fabulous writer, and while I really enjoyed his first book, it fades a little in comparison to this book. While the first book was fun and dynamic, thanks to Ren’s beautifully complex world-building skills (he is a master craftsman) and knack for colourful characters, he reached a new level in Hazards. He takes the story and pushes it past reason so that it captures your heart. The characters are vivid and multi-dimensional with great spirit, be they villain, hero or s ...more

This is my first taste of Ren Garcia's writing and now that I have read The Hazards of the Old Ones, I know I'm going to have to read The League of Elder, Book One in this series. Garcia certainly has a world-spanning imagination, but he also knows how to create complex and totally believable characters. Even one that's a silver seal! I loved his mix of male and female characters, each one completely their own person. Even when the reader thinks they know how each character will react, Garcia th ...more
