The Dashwood Haunting, a Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy (Amy Stuart Paranormal Blogger, Book 1)
by Ann Nyland (Goodreads Author)
Synopsis from Goodreads:

The richness of the writing is only equalled by the quality of the research. I do not particularly like ghost stories, but I read this book because it was set in an area where I spent some of my early life. I am so glad that I did! Ann Nyland has taken a controversial historical character (Francis Dashwood) and woven a story from the many tales told about him. Her central character, Amy, is a real person with real fears and desires and a caffeine junkie to boot.

I've read this book and the next book in the series, The Ghosts of Morpeth, and I LOVED them both and I HOPE the third one comes out SOON!!!! What a refreshing change from the badly written and poorly edited books I've read lately!! I agree with the reviewer who said that it is "a light but intelligent read." Recommended!!!!
I can't say too much without giving away the plot, but the main character, Amy, is very likeable and I was able to relate her to her personality and work circumstances. She...more

The Dashwood Haunting is a fast-paced, enjoyable read. For history enthusiasts there are tons of interesting facts and anecdotes of the past and intriguing tales of secret societies and alchemists. Amy is a down-to-earth young woman that female readers will easily identify with. Smart, witty and single but very much up for some harmless fun, she is a joy to read as she comes to grips with English culture and their love of drinking tea. Nyland throws in lots of pop culture references (Buffy, X-Fi...more
This is a really good mystery novel and I liked it so much I bought the next one in the series. I liked that the main character is a strong woman and realistic in today's society. This is an excellent ghost story. I also like that it is set in a real setting of real places. I saw a film about Aleister Crowley and so it was interesting for me that he was mentioned in this book plus I also saw the Hellfire caves in an episode of Most Haunted so it was interesting for me that this was a main settin...more
This is a real page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time; I couldn't put it down. It's also a fun read. I was pleased to see that this is a fully self contained book with no cliff-hangers as are often found in a series. The same day that I finished reading it I bought the next one in the series. There's a murder to solve right from the start and a whole host of highly interesting characters. One of the best books I have read in a long time, intelligent, witty and well writte...more
"Hedgeland, an urban fantasy of time travel. Dr April Neuland, a Professor of Ancient Languages turned non-fiction writer, has been plagued by dreams all her life, dreams of her past life in the Otherworld" A brief intro into a magnifencent adventure- a novel so original in content and plot, that it is difficult categorize it- which is a major compliment to the wonderful writer Ann Nyland. Perhaps "Speculative-techno-fantasy thiller"?? Regardless- there are some books, so well writen, so unique,...more
I was a lucky winner of this book from The Bookish Snob's blog tour for Hedgeland and what a treat.

Thanks to Goodreads First-Reads program, without which I would not have had the opportunity to read this book, and to Ann Nyland for sharing her book!
Hedgeland is a novel of time travel, loss, and self-discovery. It follows the characters of Caridwen, Worthing, and April. The three story lines document the pivotal events in the life of Caridwen, their impact on her society, and their further impact on her reincarnated self, April.

It took me a little while to get into this book. The book shifts dimensions with every chaper...from present day to her past life and then to a parrellel dimension. It is hard to keep track of where things are going on, but the book was an extremely entertaining read.

This is an interesting little book. If you like reading things that tend to read like historical teachings, you may like this. I quite liked it myself. This book doesn't have a ton of action but it has a lot of storyline and history running through it. You have the story taking place which has to do with Amy Smart, the journalist sent to England to write some articles, but within this another story grows which has a very rich history and takes you on its own journey through the past.

it was so light and easy to read.
very fun, not quite fluff, but not hard core anything. sorta heavy on history, which i quite enjoyed.
will def try the 2nd book and hope it's as pleasant a read.
would be a great date / romantic comedy movie - w/the likes of Reese Witherspoon or Ann Hathaway as the lead. Ann looks more like the cover drawing.

Hedgeland is an interesting, original science fiction story. There are 3 main characters: Caridwen, Worthing, and April. This is a complex and thought provoking book that deals with time travel, parallel dimensions, and reincarnation. With each chapter, the story shifts from person to person. I have to admit that I thought the book was a bit confusing. I think I could benefit by reading it again.

I was SO excited to read this book! It seemed as though it would have everything I love: a distant relative in a faraway country, hauntings, a family mystery, what's not to love?
This story is about Amy Stuart, an Australian who works as a blogger for a paranormal magazine. She receives a letter from her aunt in England telling her to come visit as she has some family documents for her. Amy convinces her boss that this is a great opportunity to do some articles for the magazine, so away she goes....more

I enjoyed this quite short novel, I didn't want it end! In places it did get quite heavy on the details of the historical places but that shows that Ann certainly does her homework! There are lots of interesting historical facts packed into the book. I liked the character of Amy. I enjoyed the banter between Amy and her friend in the newspaper office Annette, especially when they are bitching about Monique! Come on every work place has a Monique! lol.

Wanted to like this story, but there are too many holes in the chronology of the story. Ms Stuart writes well but needed a serious content edit before this book hit the shelves.
Amy Stuart is a blogger and paranormal investigator for an Australian magazine who travels to England to visit a great aunt. Unfortunately, her aunt dies and she ends up involved with two men who not only lie to her, but she decides to love one of them without really falling in love.

My thoughts:
This is unlike anything I have read lately. I was drawn into Caridwen's life rather quickly, but I had a hard time always making the transition between the others lives and hers. It took me a bit to get into, but once I got the hang of the interchanges I enjoyed it. I was shocked by the complexity of the story, it was unexpected. I enjoyed the characters. I can't wait for the next book!

At first it was a bit confusing, but things cleared up as the plot progressed. A great sci-fi read for anyone who enjoys time travel. The diction was easy to follow and it wont really hinder the pace of your reading. Overall an interesting romance story (for some reason time travel and romance make a compelling combination) with no real cliffhanger. There were some adventure elements to the story; it become like the movie Jump, except they did not know where they were going.
Interesting story, but clumsily written. Way way waaaaaaay too much exposition. The lead character is fairly interesting but her decisions are abrupt and not adequately explained. Scenes that should be brief are lingered over unnecessarily, and scenes that needed deeper exploration were glossed over.
With those complaints out of the way, I thought the premise was clever enough. Like I said, I liked the lead pretty well, and was willing to follow her to the end, see how it all turned out.

Glenda Alexander
marked it as to-read
My kind of book!
Discovering her great aunt dead in her living room in England, and that she is a member of a secret society that has discovered the secret to long life is just the beginning of a confusing and frightening trip to England for Amy. She is there to do a story on the Hell Fire Club, and the haunted Dashwood estates. To complicate matters are two very hadsome and totally opposite men Declan and Nick who seem to be vying for her attentions.
An interesting story and well written.

I liked this book and could identify with the heroine Amy. The author gave good background info to the story and it kept me glued to the page but I was a little disappointed in the ending as it finished too abruptly in my opinion.
I read this book on my kindle and it didn't have a Table of Contents which probably doesn't need but would have been easily for me to navigate through.
Overall I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for books to read while traveling.

This book is at it's best when in following the two timelines that aren't the present.
When in the present timeline, in my opinion, it really feels like non-fiction writing which is where Ann Nyland's writing roots seem to begin and shows clearly through
It's also hard for me to see clearly why we need all three of these stories in this one book as, at points, they don't clearly interlock.
