Bought it on Kindle. It has this interesting Dean Koontz in his prime vibe to it: the prose is lyrical without being flowery and the narrative is making a slow spiral around the unexplained. There is a small town that’s not quite what it seems, and an old woman who minds the dead by performing some sort of special ritual involving hard liquor, and an undertaker. The woman meets a young girl, who seems to be a runaway. The next thing you know, the woman is dead, savagely murdered, and her grandda...more
I wouldn’t exactly call Graveminder urban fantasy, but I don’t know what else to call it either, so I guess I’ll just leave it on my UF shelf. It reminded me of a small town horror story. I should probably list what I liked and didn’t like here. Don't worry, it’s going to be very short.
What I liked:
- From what I understand, Melissa Marr didn’t plan this as a series. Everything was wrapped up nicely which was very refreshing.
- 3rd person narrative and multiple POVs made the story a little hard t...more

Right now I don't have time to do a proper review so I'll be brief. There are some books that are so good that you can't put them down and read them until your eyelids close on you. There are books that you try to read fast because it grips you so tight that you wanna get to the end and then when it ends you wished you'd read slower just to draw it out. This is one of those books. I woke up this morning with 40 pages left and it killed me all morning to sit at work. Thank the gods for lunchtime....more

Wow, I really liked this book but it seems quite a few readers didn't or thought it was OK.
Here are my thoughts:
Maybe I'm bias, but I grew up loving Stephen King novels. This horror story had the-quirky-small-town-and-you-know-there's-something-amiss-vibe all over it. It was an easy read but I found the beginning pace slow. Long build ups are boring, however the mystery intrigued me and I couldn't put the book down.

I can see why some people would gobble this up and fall into this world. I can also see why some people would rip it to shreds and hate it. It is creepy, but not overly so. So, those of you wanting to be "pee-your-pants scared" you will be dissapointed. However, if you are a cowardly lion like me, you will be okay.
I feel like this is a -not-for-me story, yet I know it still had it's shining moments. I also hate how long it took to really get to the main story. There was so much world building an...more

High hopes are so easily dashed. It’s tough to stay grounded when all signs point to something special. Graveminder engaged my imagination with the simple back cover blurb. I readily stepped into Melissa Marr’s creation, but had difficulty remaining there.

There are two reasons why I went through Melissa Marr’s original series, Wicked Lovely.
1) The covers were gorgeous
2) Irial, the Dark King. Not gonna say anymore, cuz I don’t want to get all gushy on you here, but… yeah. Irial made it all worth reading.
Seeing as Graveminder had neither of these things, I was curious as to how I would like it.
And…
It was okay.

I was really excited about this book; 'was' being the operational word in this sentence. Although Marr is clearly not the new Hemingway, or Harris for that matter, I followed the Wicked Lovely series in appreciation of the lush world she had created. So, I was looking forward to reading her first foray into adult lit to see what she could cook up on the adult side of the fence. Let me just say, I tried to like this book. I really did. I had earmarked it for a weekend when I knew I would be doing...more

I was already familiar with Melissa Marr via her Wicked Lovely series, and I really like what she does - the themes in Ink Exchange (which I desperately need to re-read) were what got me hooked. So, I bought a signed hardcover of this in Boston... and it was worth every penny. I actually went "Wow," when I closed it. I knew it would be a five-star novel when I was halfway through, but this exceeded all of my expectations.

This book has a fascinating concept and presents a refreshing new take on the world of the dead and zombies. I loved her descriptions and world building particularly in the world of the dead. I found the multiple POVs interesting, especially the POVs of the non-main characters. Melissa Marr's writing style is wonderful as she weaves a very fitting sense of creepiness for this book.

Last Friday, I got on a plane in Minneapolis. It had been a very long day and I was extremely tired. I opened my new read, Graveminder by Melissa Marr, thinking I would read the first chapter while they finished boarding and got through the announcements. I planned to sleep the rest of the way home…187 pages later, we landed in Cleveland. I hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep. I've been a fan of this author for a long time, so I was looking forward to this book when it came out. I think she's done a good job here, with an adult fiction novel that has appeal to young adults, and with a story that she wraps up in one book (although I'm sure this could be expanded into future books). She has a good idea here, with the two worlds of the living and the dead, and the connection between the two, and she even throws in some family conflict, for good measure.

This was supposed to be Melissa Marr's first adult novel and she missed the mark. It reads like a bizarre mix of a YA novel and a New Adult novel. Having already read “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” and loved it, and the fact that these two books were side by side on the “New and Interesting” table at Barnes & Noble (R.I.P., my local Borders), I picked this book up on just-slightly-more-than-a-whim. It had a creepy decrepit southern farmhouse on the cover, and it seemed all ghosty and voodoo-y, which I was in the mood for.
My verdict: just ok.

Hrmm... What to say? I did enjoy this read. I came upon it quite by accident perusing the "New" shelf at the library and hauled it home on a whim (it's not like I already have a huge TBR pile, right?). It took a while to actually get to it but once I did it had me staying up three hours later than I had planned (or really should have done). I really enjoyed this book. I could picture Claysville all in my mind as I read it. The landscape, the graveyard, the feelings were pervasive. The old fashioned ways of this culture spun a wonderful web around in my head. It seemed so real, so possible that this world exists, still today. Up in the misty woods and mountains there is a magic that we "modern folk" know nothing of. It is something that we have lost sight of.

Melissa Marr's first novel for adults is awesome. If I had stars or some other cutesy rating system, it would top out and I'd pencil in more.
I love stories of small towns, that have big, scary, secrets. Ones that the majority of the town has no clue exists. Claysville and its story has a Dean Koontz-middle years feel to it. (Like my favorite Koontz Tick Tock). The little town certainly isn't the idyllic utopia that the locals believe it to be.

Technically this is Adult Fiction. However, since many of us know Melissa Marr from the WICKED LOVELY series, I tried this one. Sometimes authors do that crossover (one way or the other) well and sometimes they don't. It's always interesting! Ms. Marr did a lovely job with the crossover.

Graveminder is a stand-alone urban fantasy read about a small town that’s made a pact to keep its townspeople safe – that requires a sacrifice to maintain. And Rebekkah Barrow soon finds out that her life is now Claysville’s, specifically as their Graveminder. Her task: to make sure the dead stay dead. Not easy to do when you don’t really know the why or the how, and the only person who could really explain things just died.
