Okay. So I admit that this isn’t a book that would normally have been near the top of my TBR pile. I haven’t read it before, haven’t read any reviews and only had the synopsis to go on; and decided that while it sounded okay, I wasn’t going to bust a gut when I’ve got so many other things I want to read.

Alana finds out early in the book that she is really a princess of some tiny European kingdom, secreted away by her own assassin who couldn't bear to kill her as an infant. She returns when she turns 18 to try to stop the rebels from undermining the throne. Of course, she can't just walk up to the king and say she's his long-lost daughter. As I was reading through this book, I kept wondering whether Johanna Lindsey was losing her touch. This book is definitely something I would never want to read again. It was hard enough to get through the first time around!

I love it! This book really made me love the characters!! I thought since this was a book that the settings had taken place at the 18th or 19th century it would be once again, a book that has beautiful ladies with the dilemma of finding a husband. Johanna, ¿Dónde estás Johanna? Por qué ya no te encuentro entre las páginas de tus libros. Por qué, antes era capaz de encontrar tu pluma inconfundible, y ahora pienso que cualquier autora podría estar firmando novelas en tu nombre.

This one gets three stars because it's a decent story. Lots of intrigue, adventure, a whodunit and a HEA that, while you expect it, doesn't really seem that easy to reach at times. 4.5 Stars and a Recommended Read

I read some of the other reviews for When Passion Rules by Johanna Lindsey before I knew I was reviewing it myself. They were all over the place. What I found interesting is that those that did not rate the book very high wrote very unkind reviews. It’s those kinds of reviews that are not helpful to readers. They are not helpful to authors either. Honest, constructive opinions win out over malicious, unhelpful negativity every time.

I am a longtime fan of Ms. Lindsey’s writing. She brings to life a historical romance in such a way that I feel as though I am right there in her stories. When Passion Rules is no exception. This is a sweet historical romance that I found refreshing.

Alana was raised by a man she thought was her uncle. Educated in the ways of male nobility, including weaponry, Alana was capable of protecting herself with her mind as well as her hand. I loved that she was intelligent and handy with a dagger. What I loved more was that Ms. Lindsey did not go over the top with Alana’s character having her physically fight a bunch of battles or be so far out of place during that time that she was unbelievable.

Our hero, Christoph, is smart and very good at being in charge. After past attempts of imposters claiming to be the King’s daughter, Christoph arrests Alana, keeping her close to him. Although he believes Alana is not who she says she is, he listens to her. They have great conversations. The attraction between the two is felt. There may not be as much passion as the title states, but it’s there. After many twists and turns, I didn’t see coming, the truth comes out.

The ending came quickly thereafter and all loose ends were answered. I enjoyed how Ms. Lindsey found a way for there to be many facets of the happily ever after. I would give away too much of the story if I explained this further. I guess to see what I’m talking about you need to go get this book and read it!

When Passion Rules, a sweet romance that made me think and try to figure out the truth. I really liked it and I think you will too…

There was never a doubt in my mind that every story she puts out would be devoured, savored and long remembered. This was an interesting book because it is set in a completely fictional country of Lubinia -- some cross between Latvia and Lithuanian ... maybe with snow and mountains and lakes with thin ice cover.

I'm a little surprised at all the negative things I heard about this book. While not up to par with her Mallory books I still enjoyed it a lot. In the beginning it seems like she was going to be one of those kick butt heroines but in she ends up having to wait to be saved by others so that was a little disappointing. The other thing I wished had been focused on more was the mystery behind why Alana's father was never able to have another heir. There are hints as to why not but it was never fully brought to light. I thought that could have brought more drama to the end than there was. The last part that bugged me was that the end seemed so rushed. Everything was going great and I was actually surprised at a few points and then all of a sudden the book rushes towards the happy conclusion. I knew it was coming but it would have been nice to have it drawn out a little.

Other than that I thought it was a fun story with a few surprises thrown in. The supporting characters were my favorite part of the book. Like I mentioned above Poppie and Henry were wonderful and I also really liked what we saw of Christoph's mother and his main servant. I always enjoy these mysteries about the royal heirs who no one is ever really sure if they were murdered or managed to survive in hiding. It reminds me of the stories about Anastasia Romanov possibly having made it out of the massacre of her entire family. It's such a romantic idea that despite the odds they might have faced they managed to survive whatever catastrophe and one day reveal their true identity.

All in all a fun read that while not a favorite from Lindsey it was not as bad as others made it out to be.

Interesting plot with lots of twists and turns that kept me from putting the book down
Secondary characters were interesting and would have liked more back-story on them -- especially Poppie

Intrigued enough to read other books by the author
Chemistry was good between the characters except during the sex scenes which were extremely tame considering the title of the book

REVIEW: I have continued to read Johanna Lindsay’s work because I so loved her Malory Family Series. I knew going in that this book wasn’t a part of the series, but since I did enjoy them so much I figured it was worth a shot. Lindsay does know passion, I will say that. Her books are sexy, and tender. She is always reliable when you just want a little bit of (especially in this case) princess-esc romance. The hero of her novels are always protective, and end up being swept off their own feet in love. He is usually a bit overprotective and always possessive over the female. Both are characteristics I love in books, but would detest in real life. The heroine is always a very strong character who is cleaver and usually a bit funny. There is always a tiny bit of helplessness; even with Alana, who was trained to protect herself in many ways, needed Christoph’s protection and support.

WHAT I LOVED: I loved Christoph. I felt like many times that Alana was judging him very harshly, but Christoph was very honest with himself and his feelings. He wasn’t wavering or unsure. I also loved the story behind what happened to Alana as an infant…I almost saw what happened coming, and thought I would be annoyed by it (because it was a back and forth story-line), but once it played out entirely it all made sense and I ended up enjoying that part of the story.

NOT SO MUCH: Alana’s back and forth assessments of Christoph. Instead of judging him by his actions, she looked too much at what he was saying. She was always offended. Also, she was suppose to be very well trained with weapons to be able to protect herself, however she didn’t seem to come off that way whenever the need arose. I didn’t like that the orphanage and teaching options seemed to be completely off the table for Alana in the end. It wasn’t addressed really. For something that was so important to her, it seems like it would have been touched upon at the end. (And I don’t think I missed it.) (less)

Just like Once a Princess this book is set in a fictional European country where the princess and heir of that country was raised elsewhere with no idea of her true identity.

I'm sure the similar plots will annoy some people. Luckily I'm not one of those people and since Once a Princess is my favorite Lindsey book, I was looking forward to more of the same here. I was not disappointed.

Hmm... what to say? It wasn't all terrible, but it wasn't the best historical romance I've read either. The book spans a short time period, which makes the romance hard to believe sometimes. From the time the main characters meet, the novel takes place over only a few days.

I enjoy this book more than Johanna's last book. I felt that there could be more to the book and more depth to the character. I'm only halfway through this book and I've already encountered what was probably one of the dumbest cop out sex scenes that I have ever come across. Note to Johanna Lindsey...you're a romance novelist. Go back and check your job description, and in the meantime, hope that I find something decent in the last half of your book.
