Love the concept and execution of this one -- all except for the lack of source notes, as others have noted.
Bugs are comprised of numbers -- the design and playfulness of the book is its strength. It has huge visual appeal and fun and clever flaps to lift. The text is filled with humor and with fascinating information. Many bugs are depicted actual size, which is noted clearly in the text. For example there is a ruler at the bottom of the page featuring the walking stick, which also provides the...more

The creators of Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types return with a bug book where it is all done by the numbers. After an energetic introduction, readers turn pages to see bugs made up of numbers. The numbers have special reference to that insect, whether it is the number of legs, number of eyes, or how far they can jump. The design of the book is eye-catching and very engaging. The ground is bright colors that change from page to page and the bulk of the numbers are explained there. But other...more

Wow! This book is a typographical wonder and a visual treat. Packed with great tidbits of information, each bug is depicted using numbers. The book includes cutouts and carefully placed flaps and is plain fun to read.
In addition to the science connection and general kid-appeal of bugs, this is a great book to share when looking at book design and typography.

I'm really impressed. This book wasn't too short or too long. It gave some quick and interesting facts about a variety of bugs. Finally, the artwork was well done... colorful, cute, and creative. I would recommend this book for independent readers, especially children interested in entomology, ages 10 & up.

Cool, but kind of creepy if you have an aversion to bugs. Nice way to convey information, though, supposing you want facts about mosquitoes and centipedes (which I don't, frankly. The less time I spend thinking about centipedes, the happier I am).
Leslie
Many interesting facts presented in a typographically unique way. Squeamish readers might appreciate the last page that lists some excellent reasons why humans need bugs. An excellent introduction on the topic displayed creatively.

We got this book from the library and read it a couple of times before returning it. Very creative use of numbers to make illustrations. And the numbers come from facts about the insects. B loved it!

Combination of concrete poetry, concept, and numerical facts. All about bugs. Very creative. This would be a fun book to page through with your youngster. Something to return to again and again.

From the Alphabeasties crew...another awesome book - my 10,7, and 2 year old all read it together. The combination of bugs, numbers, and interesting facts keep them all entertained.

From the people who created the fabulous Alphabeasties is this visually stunning, informative and fun book about all sorts of creepy crawlies.

I learned so much about bugs from reading this book. I could see this book in classrooms from first grade through fourth grade. Awesome book!

This is a super aesthetically-pleasing book. Bright colors, neat proportions, fun (though simple) illustrations... there's a lot going on here. The featured illustrations of the bugs are actually grouped numbers, which is neat, although I wish the source of the featured number was more consistent. There are fun facts on every insect, which are nicely laid out on colored sections of the pages. I did learn some things about the various insects - there is substance here - but the star here is more...more

Wow! Amazing graphics and tons of information. Fold out pages are wonderful!!!

This nonfiction picture book is great for browsing over facts in detail. The number facts about these insects and other bugs (and things people call bugs but aren't actually bugs) are incorporated throughout the words and illustrations. Each large bug picture is created through repetition of numbers. I could see many children enjoying a look at this book.

I did find this book somewhat fragile with its different flaps and pull outs.
Jenny
I don't love bugs, but I love this book. Great concept. I think I like this one better than Alphabeasties.
Laura
Very, very cool interactive book all about bugs. Bug, okay insect, facts are presented with interactive flaps, using concrete poetry techniques, and beautiful colors. Kids will enjoy pouring over this book and exploring new facts.

As others have noted, this book does not include a bibliography. A big ding for an otherwise wonderful nonfiction title.
Heather
The illustrations are great, and there are lots of interesting facts included in an easily-digestable format. I like Alphabeasties better, but this would be great for a child (probably seven plus) who is fascinated by bugs.
