I read Jeaniene Frost's "Reckoning" as part of the Unbound anthology - Before he met Cat, vampire Bones is on the hunt in New Orlean's for a pair of brutal supernatural serial killers - I am a huge fan of Bones and Cat, so it feels weird to see him on his own. And though Frost still tells an interesting story, with the way things go down, the Bones here is a lesser one - he doesn't seem as smart or powerful as usual. (4 Amazon stars/3 goodreads stars = I liked it)

Bones & Becca . . .

This is a short story - part of the book Unbound. Prequel to the Night Huntress Series. Bones' life before Cat . . .

It's a pretty good story with Bones coming to New Orleans to help kill 2 ghouls that have been killing innocent tourists (Delphine & Louis LaLaurie).

Marie - the voodoo queen/ghoul of New Orleans - have forbidden Bones after the act was done, to come to New Orleans for 5 years. This was her territory.

I just wish I had known about this book before I started the N...more

Not bad, but I do think Bones NEEDS Cat at his side! It just wasn't the same with just him! This prequel explains Bones's expulsion, by Majestic, from The French Quarter, and Why, further down the track, he was so wary about fronting up to her again. It is set right before he heads to Ohio and his eventual destined meeting with Cat.

A sweet short story ! For me it could've been a bit longer and more detailed.

Reckoning is a story about Bones before he meets Cat.
It sure was strange to read about the handsome vampire without his "Kitten".
But with or without his beloved Cat he still has that same humor I love so much about him !

I actually read this as part of Unbound. My review below can also be found in the review for the above compilation of various novellas.

This novella, Reckoning, was the prequel to Night Huntress series, in which we got to see Bones investigating a pair of nasty, insane, murderous vampires who was apparently causing havoc in the city of New Orleans during Mardi Gras “eating” their victims. Reading this story got my heart pounding and it contained some gory details about the horrible state of the v...more

I'm honestly surprised, being how much I love Jeaniene Frost, that I'm not giving this book higher marks. I love Bones, and I love seeing him do his thing, but for me, this book just missed the mark. Honestly, I think it's because he was with a woman other than Cat.

Bones, an undead hitman, is called to New Orleans to take care of a pair of ghouls who like to torture and eat innocent humans. Once in New Orleans, he also manages to pick up a hitman who is after him.

Jeaniene Frost's characters ar...more

Well!!! Having a taste of Bones was just the tonic I needed and what a scrumptious taste it was!!!

This short story was fabulous and well written by Jeaniene Frost (as one would expect) and even though this was a 'short' story, it didn't stop Jeaniene from including the 'edge of the seat' sensations when you wanted to know what was happening...

There was even a touch of sadness within this short journey, one I didn't expect but it made the story what it was.

I just adore Bones!!!

This 60 page short story is part of the Night Huntress world of Jeaniene Frost, and provides background information to events and characters that we see later in the 4th book, Destined for an Early Grave. This is absolutely a story to search out, if for no other reason than to enjoy a few moments from Bones' POV. In the novels, Cat is often chided because she doesn't think like a vampire. So, it is sweetly refreshing, after umpteen hundred pages of Cat's often immature and wishy-washy observatio...more

After reading the first book in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, One Grave at a Time, I knew I wanted to read everything in this series, starting with this prequel novella, Reckoning.

This novella doesn't really add more to the story -- it's a prequel after all -- but does give readers a glimpse into Bones's character, before he met Cat. We get a glimpse of his hitman life that we see a little bit in the first book of the series. I will say that I was a bit disappointed in the lack of sex...more

It was so weird reading Bones without Cat. Even though it wasn't his POV, it was still very strange. Other than that little tid bit, I really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would. The idea was certainly very interesting but there were parts that just didn't add up for me. I am however, very impressed by the ending, for several reasons, which made me give this book five stars.

For one thing, I saw a side of Bones that I absolutely loved seeing: compassion. He showed compassion for Jelani...more

This is the book that started it all. Reckoning is a novella that shows a bit of Bones life before Cat came into it. We didn't see Bones in all his sarcastic, witty glory, but there were glimpses. I enjoyed it, as far as short stories go. It was a nice, quick read. Just don't expect all that we've come to look forward to in the Night Huntress books.

There is a murderer on the loose in New Orleans. Not just any old murderer, either. This is a famous duo known to torture and experiment on their vic...more

This story is a prequel to the Night Huntress series. I suggest you read this before reading the Halfway to the Grave (1st in the Night Huntress series). This story is before Cat and Bones meet in the Halfway to The Grave book where readers are introduced to Cat and her special abilities as a half-vampire. In Reckoning, an insight is provided about Bones and his job as a vampire hunter. He is in New Orleans looking for vicious killers that are eating people during Marti Gras. I was excited to st...more

I’ve read this after reading the first book and about 50% of the second book so I knew exactly who Bones was and what he did for living, well, not living, but, oh,, you know what I mean. What he does to get money, anyway.
The story is in New Oreland and is before he meets Cat. It’s in 3ºpeeps POV, not my fave, but it was cool enough. It still got me somewhat inside Bones. He is still hot and still Bones, but there was no talk back and all the feisty stuff I love about this...more

So I went out of order and read this after finishing book 4. To tell you the truth, Destined for an Early Grave was so positively intense that I needed a quick break between books without losing my momentum! (Yes, it is that serious!)... so I purchased this eBook and read it during my lunch break. HOW COOL to tell the story of Bones BEFORE he meets Cat. How cool that this takes place in New Orleans. How cool that the book ends with the mention of his next hunt, which is how he and Cat meet in bo...more

'Reckoning' takes place before 'Halfway To The Grave' the first book in the Night Huntress series, before Bones and Cat have even met. It's a novella set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The book sits firmly in the urban fantasy/horror genre, with Bones on the trail of two gruesome ghoul serial killers.

The book focuses mainly on Bones, I enjoyed learning more about Bones before he met Cat. But at the same time it was a little strange...more

An interesting story. I'm curious about their interpretation of vampires and ghouls. I've heard the series is a popular one, and this novella makes me want to try out the main story.

Good read!

A fun introduction to Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress world, featuring Bones (who I assume is the male main character in the NH series).
I really enjoyed the story, which was a little darker and creepier than your normal paranormal - the scene at the end?! Straight out of a scary movie. - Bones' "British" accent was a little (or a lot) overdone, which annoyed me sufficiently that it detracted from the story a little bit. Since Cat (the female main character) is the primary character of the NH se...more

This book is a part of the Night Huntress world. Set in New Orleans just before Bones (hero) meets Kat (heroine from Night Huntress series). This story follows Bones who is hired to catch a pair of serial killer ghouls in New Orleans. The story is based on the real life stories of Delphine LaLaurie (a socialite who tortured slaves in the early 1800s). While it is Interesting to see Bones before Kat, it was not my favorite of Frost's short stories. If you like the Night Huntress series, you may w...more

This is going to be a super-short review as this is a novella and I don’t want to give up any details that will blow the story line. Short or not, there’s a great storyline to this one!

Bones, Bones, Bones….

If you are a fan of the Night Huntress series, you know who Bones is. Crispin “Bones” Russell is the snarky, sarcastic, alpha male lead for the series and he’s pure perfection as far as bad-ass vampire characters goes. He’s 100% lethal but with LOTS of personality. His sense of humor and wit i...more

I liked this short story. You get to see a glimpse of Bones before Cat. He doesn't seem quite as intense, lacking a bit of his haughty personality. I'm not sure if that is due to the short nature of the story or if it is because he was different before he meet Cat.

I really liked that this story tied into the other books. We met Marie (Queen of New Orleans) and learned a bit about hers and Bone's past. I think that's the thing I didn't like about the Sookie short stories - they were just stories...more

Wow! my oh my! isn't this a gore little book.

At first I was "Oh! I should probably drop this". Fortunately, I adopted quickly xD

I like this Bones guy. He seems mysterious and intense, which is my favorite. But I'm not gonna call him my favorite yet until I've read the first book.

This Bones guy is kind of a vampire/immortal hunter. He saves innocents from being killed by those other immortal creatures. That's the main plot in all of this. Even when it's short, there was never a dull moment. I fra...more

BONES PRE CAT

I thought this book really gave a good description of what Bones was like before he met Cat. Having read the Night Huntress books before this, I found it really interesting to see how much Cat really changed for him.

He was definitely a player from the beginning, as you can gather from the other books, but I got the impression that he tried to make himself removed from emotion. He tried not getting wrapped up too much in anything except his mission, and often used people to achieve...more

Rather enjoyed this one.

I think I am honestly sick of Cat, so this being a pre-Cat story was nice.

I don't think Bones was less or a shadow compared to the Bones we normally know.. I think it's him before the time period we are used to. People must remember that the bulk of the stories we know and love with Bones take place 5 years after we first meet him, and it wasn't a happy 5 years.

I think this story could have been a bit more in depth, but there is only so much that can be done in the short...more

Great short story about Bones set before he meets Cat in the first book. He's been hired as an assassin by the queen of New Orleans so we get to meet Marie for the first time too. It was strange seeing Bones without Cat but this was great to get a Bones fix. Not much in the way of romance (obviously!) but some nice action scenes.

I'm curious to see if Ralmiel will appear at some point in the series, I don't remember him in the first 5 books but think he could be interesting. If you're a Bones fan...more

It was weird to read about Bones without Cat! He wasn't totally the same Bones we know and love from the series. He was still Bones, honorable, a good guy and ruthless when needed but he wasn't happy. It serves to show just how much Cat meant to him and how much he needs her, pre-Cat Bones is lonely and a little depressed with no real care if he gets killed on the job or not whereas post-Cat Bones has something to live for in the form of Cat! I liked Ralmiel whenever he stopped trying to kill Bo...more

What can I say, is a story from Bones’ point of view (POV); that should be enough incentive to read this novella.

Bones has been summoned to a meeting by none other than Marie “Majestic” Laveau, (the famous voodoo priestess of the French Quarter in New Orleans) to find and take care of the infamous LaLaurie couple, notoriously known in human lore for their vicious tendencies. But, what should have been a straight forward missions, turns into a game of hide and seek when a third party becomes inv...more

It was interesting to get a look at Bones before he met Cat and I really enjoyed getting to see some of his early interactions with Marie, the ghoul queen of New Orleans. It gave me a feel for where some of that bad blood between them came from. However, I have to admit that this novella featuring Bones without Cat was missing a little something - namely Cat. I think that the stories need that chemistry between Cat and Bones to make them work. But it was a good read even with that little bit of...more
