The volume of Curtis' photos includes an introduction that gives an outline of the life and work of Curtis, in the context of his era. It is interesting that Curtis had very little formal education, and came from a family that was poor; however, his father, after serving for two years in the Civil War on the Union side, brought home a camera lens, and later Curtis obtained a book, which explained how a camera could be made.
