Mason Dixon: Fourth-Grade Disasters (Mason Dixon)
Here's the second entry in veteran author Claudia Mills' charming middle-grade series, which finds the lovably sardonic title character starting the fourth grade, which he's dreading: everyone in fourth grade is expected to join the school choir. And sing. In front of everyone. Mason can't think of many things he enjoys less than singing. But performing in front of other p...more

Mason is leery of starting fourth grade-- not only does it mean being away from Dog, whom he has come to love, it means that he will have to be in the Plainfield Platters singing group, since all fourth graders are. This is a quick read and a good follow-up to Mason Dixon: Pet Disasters. Those who haven't read the first book should be able to catch on without any trouble. I do wonder, though, when Mason is going to find something he actually likes. That's mostly what the two books seem to be about - how Mason doesn't like anything. Kind of bizarre.
We were trying to use this as a bedtime story (my kids are 3rd & 4th grade--the target audience for the book) and both my kids and I were bored with the characters and the plot.
Unfortunately for Mason, there are just too many other books out there that are many times more engaging.

Mason never wants to join in any activities. This year he starts fourth grade and does not want to join the Platters- the singing chorus for 4th and 5th graders. With his typical wit and down to earth personality, Mason manages to find a place for himself in the group.
