C.C. Hunter wrote an amazing sequel to Born at Midnight. Everything I loved about Born at Midnight was present in Awake at Dawn. Awake at Dawn is absolutely unputdownable. I read this book in record time. I got up an hour early in the morning to read, I read on the bus on my way to class, I even ignored my friends at break time in order to immerse myself in Kylie's story.

I got up an hour early in the morning to read, I read on the bus on my way to class, I even ignored my friends at break time in order to immerse myself in Kylie's story.

Awake at dawn is a delightful read with a plot full of twists and turns, genuine emotions that reach your heart and make you helpless against loving the characters. Every character in this series is just so alive, their personalities are so strong, it feels like you're reading about your own friends and enemies. No character is unnecessary, each and every one of them plays a major role in Kylie's life (positive and negative).

Kylie's friends, Miranda and Della, with their clashing personalities, their kindness and devotion to Kylie provide the book with many delightful moments, and gut wrenching ones too. And Holiday along with Burnett is such a positive role model for all the kids at camp. The relationship between the two camp leaders (business and personal) adds to the richness of the book. Kylie's relationship with Holiday was especially heart warming. Holiday filled the role of a supportive big sister perfectly.

Kylie herself is a wonderful main character, with kindness that she offers even to those who in my opinion don't deserve it. All her emotions and reactions are so genuine and realistic I found myself crying when she did, laughing when she did. She's a wonderful example of a teen trying to find herself and to define her role in this world. She’s long from figuring all that out, but despite all the hurdles that are thrown in her way she stays true to herself, even in the most difficult situations.

Now, what to say about the boys...Oh, the boys. I have to admit I was leaning heavily toward Derek in this book and rooted for him. For once I wanted the kind and loving character, who is always there for the girl, to in the end win her over. And just as I was set on wanting Derek and Kylie together, C.C. Hunter added Lucas and his charmingly honest personality to the mix, leaving me yet again undecided about the love issue.

Without a doubt, Awake at Dawn is worth buying, reading and displaying it on your bookshelf. The third book (and hopefully not the final book), Taken at Dusk is one of my most anticipated books in the year of 2012.(less)

Upon starting Awake at Dawn, I begged it to not to be as bad as Born at Midnight was. My feelings about Born at Midnight can hardly be spoken of. Because I am being punished, it ended up being just as bad as the first book. The few improvements made are not enough to make it any less offensive. I apologize for the long review ahead of time, but there was a lot of stuff I needed to discuss.

Born at Midnight was a great start to this series. I liked the writing, and even though Kylie was boring sometimes, it was still enjoyable. I didn't like certain things about it, like the shallow romance, and the mistery about what Kylie was.
I hoped that, in Awake at Dawn, those things would develop, and we'd get to know a lot more about Shadow Falls. I can say, for sure, that this didn't happen.

I liked the writing, and even though Kylie was boring sometimes, it was still enjoyable. I didn't like certain things about it, like the shallow romance, and the mistery about what Kylie was.
I hoped that, in Awake at Dawn, those things would develop, and we'd get to know a lot more about Shadow Falls. I can say, for sure, that this didn't happen.
Well, to start with, Kylie doesn't know what she is. She spends the first half of the book searching for answers, and when she doesn't get them, she starts to look for her grandparents. And big surprise, this research leads us nowhere. I get it that the autor wants a suspense, but it's boring. I can't stand another internal crisis, with Kylie wondering what she is, and being completely broken by it. Seriously, get a grip. Strong female characters are one of the things that attract me in a book,and someone who just complains about the lack of answers and does little about it isn't appealing.
The romance is also disappointing. Kylie likes Derek, but can't give her heart to him because she still thinks about Lucas (the shape-shifter who left the camp for unknown reasons). And, of course, when Lucas comes back, her whole frame shakes and her pulse speeds up at the sight of him, while at the same time, she tries to fall in love with Derek. Love triangles are great, as long as they are well-written. And this one wasn't. It was a mess of feelings and impulses, and I still don't understand Kylie's preferences.
Lucas, apparently, is supposed to be charming, and a badboy. I got the impression he's a jerk covered with sweet words. He leaves the girl, knowing that she may have feelings for another man, comes back later and expects to find her waiting for him. And when she hesitates, he tries to win her by making her remember how their love is amazing.
Oh, and did I mention that while he was gone, Kylie dreamed about them making out? And that the dreams aren't just a fragment of her imagination, but a psychic ability?
Not to mention that every 20 pages or so, Kylie talked to Holiday about every single thing that happened with her. Yes, she wanted to have a friend and yes, it's great to have heart-to-heart conversations, but with the camp leader? I know I wouldn't open up and spill all my problems in front of the principal of my school, no matter how many times she tells me I'm her friend.
Another disappointment was Miranda and Della. Yes, Della being a vampire and Miranda being a witch really makes their friendship that much harder, but the constant fight between the two of them was really childish. There wasn't even an argument, just constant insults. My point is, wanna make a troubled friendship? Fine. But make it believable.
One of the things I liked about Awake at Dawn, though, was Kylie's relationship with her mother. The way they cared about each other was great, and there was a specific part of the book that I really enjoyed. However, while their love was great, the change of personality in her mother was obvious. It could have been more subtle.
I really hate to write negative reviews. I do. But my mind was going to explode in frustration when I finished this book. I know others may have loved it, but it was ... not so good for me. I'm still going to read Taked at Dusk, though. I'm hoping it'll get better.

It's still funny and adventurous and full of teen dramas.... which gets a bit annoying at times.

Kylie is still trying to discover what she is. Is she a vampire? werewolf? shapeshifter? fairy? She's still confused with her feelings for Derek and Lucas but decided to give Derek a chance. And I must agree with Lucas, Derek is an idiot. Derek is patient and understanding guy BUT what the hell was he thinking?!? As for Lucas I'm getting fon...more

This book really helped cement my connection to all of the main characters established in Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls #1). I think Kylie is a likeable protagonist, dealing with real-life issues that make you genuinely feel for the predicaments she finds herself in throughout the novel. I LOVE her two best friends at S...more 'Awake at Dawn' is the second in the Shadow Falls series, chronicling Kylie Galen's coming of age (and supernatural-icity!) with her new found friends, life, and love-interests. This book really helped cement my connection to all of the main characters established in Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls #1). I think Kylie is a likeable protagonist, dealing with real-life issues that make you genuinely feel for the predicaments she finds herself in throughout the novel. I LOVE her two best friends at Shadow Falls Camp - Della and Miranda - their humor as well as their own personal journeys of self discovery/self acceptance are at once entertaining and touching. The relationship between Kylie and the main camp leader Holiday grows to a whole new level in this book, and I am always touched by Holidays giving, caring, and empathetic character. And Kylie's love life is just as steamy and exciting as in the first novel (see: shower scene with Derek *swoons*).

For me, there was really one major point to this book that stood out. I loved Kylie's connection to the Falls. The scene where she sees the Falls for the first time - the sense of reverence, oneness, and calm that she experiences in what I'm sure will remain a sacred location throughout the rest of the series is poignant. C.C Hunter really did an excellent job in that scene of creating a sense of peacefulness, understanding and acceptance for Kylie in that moment, which was so perfectly in juxtaposition with the chaos of her life at this point in series. The question of "What am I?" becomes almost obsolete during this scene. And although that question is the driving force of the story so far, it was a powerful moment of understanding - for both Kylie and reader - that this place where Death Angels are said to dwell (feared by all other supernaturals) is where Kylie truly feels herself. I'm excited for the author to delve deeper into this issue in future novels.

There were only a couple of elements that I wasn't completely satisfied with. The last 50 pages of the novel were very tense, exciting and full of action - but I personally felt a disconnect between these pages and the rest of the novel. The dangers Kylie faces in the last part of the novel are only introduced towards the very end - characters and themes that the reader is oblivious to throughout the first 300 pages of reading (at least, I was oblivious). I understand how the author tried to connect the story line - there were hints and unexplained moments throughout the book that became clear at the end - but the whole thing seemed a little rushed, and a little random. I'm including the story line involving Kylie's ex-best friend Sara in this last 50 pages - I thought that element was not developed sufficiently before it was resolved - and the resolve itself was one short scene!

Despite this, the novel ended on a good note for me - with plenty of unanswered questions and unrequited love to see me through to the next book. I eagerly await the release of #3!! (less)

Fantastic sequel! I loved every part it. I loved discovering what Kylie was discovering, feeling what Kylie felt, and watching her grow. I have to admit, boy wise, I was Team Lucas after Born At Midnight. But, now, after Awake At Dawn, I am kind of split. Derek is just the all around great guy, with sexy green eyes and then there's also Lucas who you can't help but loving. ARRRGGG I'm not sure...more

This book tragically suffers from the fabled second book slump that so many have fallen prey to before. Wherein the book is entire too long, tries to both add onto the previous book and set up the next disasterously, rushes at times, drags at others, and ultimately falls short.

I was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the fist book. The second is a different story. The first book had this odd charm to it that really endeared itself to me with. I liked the coming of age story, and the fact that it didn't get bogged down with the romance issue.

This second book is pretty much everything I didn't want it to be. It's 400 pages of teenage angst. And not the good kind. The kind where Kelsey just kind of mopes around and agonizes over WHAT A TERRIBLE THING IT IS THAT TWO BOYS ARE INTERESTED IN HER, BECAUSE THAT'S CONVENIENT AND HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. While one of our male love interests, Derek, goes from kind of adorable to just weird,and creepy and not likeable. If he's not getting mad at her for some ridiculous reason, he's avoiding her, or accusing her of not liking him, or just generally bitching about something. Lucas, the other love interest, is more of a plot device than anything else here, but he's still miles ahead of everyone else.

What I liked about the first book was that it was big on plot. This second ... not so much. In fact I had to look really hard to find a plot. I actually thought for a long time there wasn't a plot, and instead we were being treated to just a bunch of random moments strung together by teenage hormones. And then suddenly, BAM, right at the end, with very little book left to go, there's suddenly this vampire guy and he wants to make Kelsey some kind of bride and I was confused and not happy and just annoyed. It didn't make a lot of sense and it wasn't good writing.

I look at it this way, this book could have been a lot worse. And I have high hopes for the series. If anything I'll keep reading for the relationship between Burnett and Holiday. They're easily the best part of the series. (less)

Im zweiten Teil der fünfbändigen Shadow Falls Caps Reihe „Erwacht im Morgengrauen“ von C.C. Hunter erlebt Kylie ein wahres Gefühlschaos.
Eigentlich lässt sich die Geschichte recht kurz zusammenfassen: Wen meint der Geist? Was ist Kylie? Wen möchte Kylie lieber küssen – Derek oder Lucas? Diese drei Fragen beschäftigen Kylie die ganze Geschichte über. Da diese mit 6 CDs recht lang ist, drehen sich die Fragen oft im Kreis, wodurch mich die Geschichte teilweise langweilte.
Die Frage, wer nach Aussage des Geistes sterben wird, wenn Kylie nicht hilft, wurde schon am Ende des ersten Bandes aufgeworfen. Der Geist gibt viele Hinweise, die Kylie lange Zeit gar nicht wahrnimmt geschweige denn versteht. Sie sucht zwar nach Antworten, aber dabei erschien mir unglaubwürdig, dass sie alle Hinweise ignoriert.
Von Beginn an steht wieder die Frage im Raum: Was ist Kylie für ein übernatürliches Wesen? Dabei müsste es eigentlich heißen: Was ist Kylie NICHT? Denn während des Hörens stellt sich heraus, dass Kylie eine neue Fähigkeit an sich entdeckt und dann noch eine und noch eine... Was kann sie denn eigentlich nicht? Ich bin gespannt, was die weiteren Bände noch für Fähigkeiten ans Licht bringen.
Die Dreiecksgeschichte zwischen Kylie, Derek und Lucas begann ebenfalls im ersten Band. Da Lucas verschwunden ist, nähern sich Derek und Kylie an, aber die Gedanken und Träume an Lucas vergehen nicht... Sehr unpraktisch, wenn der Freund Gefühle lesen kann ;) Die Konflikte sind ganz gut beschrieben, allerdings ging mir Kylies Gedanken à la „Ich würde ihn so gerne küssen.“ manchmal auf die Nerven, weil das so oft thematisiert wird.
Richtig spannend fand ich die Geschichte bis kurz vor Ende kaum, da hauptsächlich die drei Fragen eine (sich wiederholende) Rolle spielen. Dann überschlugen sich die Ereignisse jedoch förmlich, was eine angenehme Abwechslung war.
Gelesen wird „Erwacht im Morgengrauen“ von Shandra Schadt. Sie ist u.a. die Synchronstimme von Miley Cyrus und synchronisierte bereits Jessica Alba und Anne Hathaway. Ihre Stimme und ihre Art die Figuren zu sprechen gefiel mir sehr gut (viel besser als Anke Kortemeier im ersten Band). Sie hat eine frische, jugendliche Stimme, die gut zu Kylie passt. Ebenso gelingt es ihr, männliche und erwachsene Stimmen zu lesen, ohne dass es klingt, als hätte sie ihre Stimme zu sehr verstellt. Da Stimmen meistens Geschmackssache sind, kann ich euch empfehlen, auf der Website des Audioverlags die Hörprobe anzuhören.
Insgesamt konnte mich der zweite Band nicht so sehr fesseln wie der Erste. Der angenehmen Stimme Shandra Schadts lauschte ich jedoch gern, die glücklicherweise auch den dritten Teil „Entführt in der Dämmerung“ lesen wird.

‟Erwacht im Morgengrauen“ von C.C. Hunter ist der zweite Band der ‟Shadow Falls Camp“-Reihe der amerikanischen Autorin. Contemporary-Fantasy für Jugendliche. Mit dem ersten Band kann der zweite leider nicht mithalten.
Aber vor der ausführlichen Rezension, in diesem Fall übrigens zum Hörbuch, noch ein kurzer Blick auf den Inhalt:

Obwohl sie jetzt schon einige Wochen im Shadow Falls Camp ist und sich ihre Fähigkeiten immer deutlicher zeigen, weiß Kylie immer noch nicht, was für eine Art übersinnliches Wesen sie ist. Ein Vampir? Ein Werwolf? Eine Fee? Oder etwas ganz anderes? Seit einiger Zeit erscheint ihr zudem immer der Geist einer Frau, der sie vor dem Tod einer geliebten Person warnt und um Hilfe bittet. Doch wer soll sterben?

So viel zum Inhalt, jetzt zu der Qual, die er mir beim Anhören teilweise bereitet hat. Als der erste Band, ‟Geboren um Mitternacht“, mit der Zeile "Für alle Fans von 'House of Night'" warb, habe ich dem noch widersprochen. Denn den Auftakt der ‟Shadow Falls Camp“-Reihe fand ich tatsächlich deutlich besser als jeden Band der ‟House of Night“-Reihe vom Mutter-Tochter-Gespann Cast, die mir durch ihre unerträglich einfach gestrickte Sprache zusammen mit den auf dümmlichste Weise hormongesteuerten Protagonisten schnell die Belastungsgrenze meiner Nerven zeigten. ‟Erwacht im Morgengrauen“ nähert sich diesem Niveau im zweiten Teil allerdings leider so sehr an, dass ich mittlerweile nicht mehr widersprechen kann - ‟Shadow Falls Camp“ ist für Fans von ‟House of Night“ geeignet. Für mich damit offensichtlich eher nicht (mehr).

Während der erste Band noch ganz interessant war, stellt man beim zweiten schnell fest, dass Kylie ein ziemlich oberflächliches Huhn ist, ohne nennenswerte Fähigkeiten im Bereich des simplen Nachdenkens vorweisen zu können. Deswegen versucht sie es vermutlich auch gar nicht erst. Regelmäßig taucht der Geist auf, der sie warnt, dass eine von ihr geliebte Person bald sterben wird. Leider kann der Geist Kylie nicht sagen, wer es ist – überschüttet unsere Hauptprotagonistin alias Miss ‟Schwer-von-Begriff“ aber dafür mit Hinweisen, die mich als Leser ansprangen, von Kylie aber frustrierenderweise ignoriert wurden. Zu Kylies Glück – Achtung, Ironie – verschwand dieser nervige, unkommunikative Geist aber netterweise jedes Mal recht schnell wieder und Kylie konnte ihre Gedanken wichtigeren Dingen zuwenden als dieser Lappalie. Welche Bedeutung hat schon der bevorstehende Tod einer geliebten Person, wenn man so viel größere Probleme hat?

Jungsprobleme zum Beispiel. Derek, der alles daran setzt, Kylie für sich zu gewinnen, oder doch Lucas, der zwar gerade nicht mehr im Camp ist, aber Kylie nicht aus dem Kopf geht? Wenn solche wichtigen Fragen Kylies hübschen Köpfchen beschäftigen, wie soll sie da noch die Zeit finden, herauszubekommen, wer wohl demnächst sterben könnte. Mal ehrlich, der Tod wird nicht schon Morgen an die Tür klopfen, der Geist kommt bestimmt noch mal wieder – auch wenn er langsam drängelnder wird. Lucas oder Derek, das ist das weltbewegende Dilemma. Oder etwa nicht? … Ja, was soll ich sagen, mir haben sich Kylies Prioritäten auch nicht ganz erschlossen. Selbst für einen verliebten Teenager in einem oberflächlichen Jugendbuch ist sie erschreckend selten gedanklich bei der Sache. Dafür ist sie weinerlich, nervig, dumm und anstrengend.

Bedauerlicherweise findet Kylie für das weltbewegende Jungsproblem auch keine Lösung, sondern dreht sich einfach immer nur im Kreis. So kann man eine Dreiecksbeziehung zwar sicherlich auch gestalten – muss man aber nicht. Ehrlich nicht.

Der Handlung hat das jedenfalls nicht gut getan, denn sie geht kaum voran. Insbesondere der spannende Kern – wen meint der Geist? – wird erst, wie bereits erwähnt, kaum beachtet, dann blitzschnell abgehandelt, um zum Ende hin mit einer völlig unvorbereiteten, grausig schlecht umgesetzten und unsinnig wirkenden Wendung aufzuwarten, die ebenfalls schon wieder abgeschlossen ist, kaum dass sie begonnen hat. Die ganze Geschichte scheint ohne Konzept zusammengeschustert. Jungs, böse Vampire, Eltern in der Ehekrise, den Tod verkündender Geist, Kylies Abstammung, Kylies Fähigkeiten, Liebesleben einer Campleiterin, Liebesleben der Freundinnen... und und und. Das alles musste irgendwie in dieses Buch passen und im Endeffekt kommt jeder einzelne Punkt – bis auf die Jungs und das Liebesleben diverser Protagonisten – um Längen zu kurz. Die Spannung fehlt vollkommen und viel Sinn ergibt das meiste leider auch nicht.

Sprachlich muss man selbstverständlich berücksichtigen, dass man ein Jugendbuch in der Hand hält. Da ich das – also Jugendbücher in der Hand halten – allerdings öfter tue, kann ich guten Gewissens sagen, dass der Schreibstil der Autorin leider eher schwach ist. Kurze Sätze, wenig Abwechslung, eher dinglich-nüchterne als Atmosphäre-schaffende Beschreibungen, keine Raffinesse.

Die Hörbuch-Sprecherin Shandra Schadt (wer den ersten Band als Hörbuch gehört hat, muss sich hier leider auf einen Sprecherwechsel einstellen) übertreibt teilweise zwar die Betonungen ein wenig, macht ihre Sache ansonsten aber sehr gut und hat eine angenehme Vorlesestimme. Das Hörbuch ist eine gekürzte Fassung, aber bei so vielen irrelevanten, sich wiederholenden Passagen, wie ich sie hier erleben musste, Passagen also, die keiner Streichung zum Opfer gefallen sind, kann ich mir kaum vorstellen, dass Relevantes fehlt. Das Buch, beziehungsweise das Hörbuch, hätten gut und gerne noch einmal um mindestens ein Viertel gekürzt werden können, denn was den Handlungsfortschritt angeht, so ist dieser einfach zu gering im Vergleich zum Umfang.

Fazit: Kein wirkliches Hörvergnügen. Viele Hormone, wenig Handlung, eine frustrierend desinteressierte Protagonistin mit Hang zur Weinerlichkeit. Leider ein deutlicher Rückschritt im Vergleich zum ersten Band. Ich muss leider von diesem (Hör-)Buch abraten. Knappe 2 Sterne (less)

Eigene Meinung:

"Shadow Falls Camp - Erwacht im Morgengrauen" von C. C. Hunter hat mir beinahe noch besser als sein Vorgänger gefallen.

Hunters Schreibstil verlockt wieder einmal zum Verweilen und Lesen, ist dabei so bildlich, dass es meinem Kopfkino nicht schwer fällt, seine Arbeit zu erledigen. So locker dieser auch ist, hat es mir ein bisschen an Humor gefehlt und auch dieses Mal hatte der auktoriale Erzähler eine verwirrende Wirkung auf mich. Meiner Meinung nach, wäre diese Geschichte besser aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählt, immerhin wird man zu 90% eh über Kylies Gedanken und Gefühlswelt informiert.

Die verschiedenen Charaktere kommen ein wenig zu kurz. Wie gesagt, dreht sich alles um Kylie und auch wenn in diesem Camp ein reges Treiben herrscht, hätte es mir schon gefallen, ruhig ein wenig mehr Zeit mit Miranda oder Della zu verbringen. Dafür haben Holiday und Burnett eine eigene Bühne und das hat mir sehr gut gefallen - ich bin sehr gespannt wie das mit den beiden weitergeht.

Die Geschichte an sich war einfach toll zu lesen. Zugegeben Kylies Tränendrusen wurden wirklich oft beansprucht und manches war doch sehr vorhersehbar, trotzdem konnte ich überrascht werden und hatte noch Verständnis für unsere leidende Protagonistin. Schwer fiel mir nur, mich an das Aussehen der verschiedenen Figuren zu erinnern, weswegen ein paar "Rückblenden" oder die ein- oder andere Figurenbeschreibung schon gefehlt haben. Nebenbei bin ich überdimaßen froh, wenn Madame sich endlich für einen der Herren entscheidet. Ich weiß, dass diese Dreiecksbeziehung eine zentrale Rolle spielt, aber ein bisschen nervig ist es schon.

Besonders gefallen hat mir, dass der Titel wieder einen direkten Bezug zum Text hat - er taucht sogar mehrere Male im selbigen auf. Das Cover ist auch wieder gelungen, obwohl ich mir im Kontext irgendwie mehr vom Wasserfall erhofft habe.

Fazit:

C. C. Hunters "Shadow Falls Camp - Erwacht im Morgengrauen" ist eine gelungene Fortsetzung, die Spaß macht und den Leser in seinen Bann zieht. Ich wünschte mir wirklich, diese Reihe würde aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählt werden und die anderen Charaktere hätten etwas mehr Raum, um sich auszubreiten, dennoch bin ich voll und ganz überzeugt. Man fühlt sich in diesem Camp einfach wohl und sollte die Reihe verfilmt werden, könnte mich nichts davon abhalten, diese zu gucken. Ich kann Band 3 kaum erwarten und empfehle diese Reihe jedem, der einfach mal abschalten und Spaß haben will. 5/5 Bücher!(less)

Kylie’s identity is not the only crisis going on in this book though. Kylie’s got a new ghost shadowing her, this time a woman who says that someone Kylie loves is going to die soon unless Kylie can stop it. And apparently she can. If only the ghost would tell her who to save and how to do it.

On top of this, someone is messing with the security at Shadow Falls and shadowing Kylie, watching, waiting, but not making contact. I won’t tell you who it is, cos that would spoil it but let’s just say it’s no guardian angel. It’s also not Fredericka – she’s a lot more overt in her intentions to knock Kylie out of the way.

And where Fredericka is, Lucas is too. Yup, Lucas returns to Shadow Falls, right when things start to heating up between Derek and Kylie. The love triangle continues in this book, with a focus on the relationship between Derek and Kylie. I really appreciate this. Derek is so sweet (and hot) and he cares for Kylie so much. He doesn’t play head games and is so clear that all he wants is Kylie. Kylie is about 95% sure she wants Derek too, but about 5% of her, or if we’re honest, probably 20% of her still shares a bond with Lucas. And Lucas plans to exploit that bond and win Kylie over. So lots of romantic tension in this book. And more making out. And naked men.

I kind of get how Kylie is attracted to both boys, but she really needs to stop burying her head in the sand and make a decision. When Derek said, “Please don’t break my heart”, I got the most awful premonition of Kylie doing exactly that with Lucas. Someone is going to get hurt, if not everyone.

Another pair who are too stupid to see that they are perfect for one another is Burnett and Holiday. While I love the tension between them and their unconstructive banter, it’s so frustrating watching them tiptoe around their attraction to each other. Seriously they’re not feeling anyone, least of all each other.

All in all though I absolutely loved Awake at Dawn, as much if not more than Born at Midnight. It’s got about the same amount of action and drama, which is not enough in my view, and even more romantic tension. CC Hunter also begins to reveal some things about Kylie’s identity, and two new villains in the next instalment. And because I’m easily hooked I’m diving right into the third book.

Although she might just look like a teenage girl on the outside the power she holds within her is far stronger than anyone in the camp. Throughout the book the reader is exposed to more of Kylie’s powers. It seems as though her power matures along with her. At the beginning of the camp she is confused and doesn’t understand the supernatural creatures that exist in the world. Although she is one, she was isolated from the rest. But as time passes in the camp, she realizes their existence and hers. I feel like because she was able to accept who she is her powers began to show more frequently. She goes on different searches to figure out what lies within her. With each path she takes a new truth is opened to her. Helping ghost is just a mere part of her powers. She can dreamscape and when she thought that the werewolf counselor had done harm to her mother, the strength of her power is shown as she was able to take down a werewolf. Same goes when Lucas (her werewolf crush) was locked up by rogue vampires when coming to save her, she broke down a concrete wall to save him. Confused about her powers and told she was a protector (one who has the powers to protect others but not herself) she searches for her biological grandparents from her dad’s side (she doesn’t know them) to give her some answers.

Kylie is a fascinating character with great potential. She is someone you can depend on but sometimes I feel as if she makes the wrong decisions. She is so determined to find out who she really is she is oblivious to what is in front of her. She pushes aside her friends and her potential boyfriend(s) and takes the dangerous road that might not even have the answers. I really like her character, strong and protective, but I think she needs to just be a teenage girl and worry less about her powers and more about her life with friends and family. Miranda and Della are very caring friends, although they want to rip each other’s head off, they are always there for Kylie and I think it is time for Kylie to spend more time with them instead of figuring out the unknown. The answers will arrive sooner or later and she just needs to be patient. Overall i don't really see her character change from the first book because she is still confused as ever. Although she accepted being different, she doesn't know "what" she is or who to choose as her boyfriend! :)

Additionally this book incorporates romance as well. Should Kylie pick a half fae or a werewolf? I think she should pick Lucas the werewolf. Derek is sweet and kind but Lucas is all she thinks about. Lucas is the one she meet when she was little, the one who protected her, the one who will risk changing his bloodline just to love her. It bothers me that she cannot choose one or the other when it is obvious who she really likes. This book basically has everything a fantasy reader would want. The supernatural, the romance, the action and the mystery so I would recommend this book – IT IS AWESOME.

For me, that was exactly what it was like reading this book. I remember I complained about the fact that Hunter didn’t use first person in the first installment of this series and unfortunately I have to do it again. In my opinion, if you’re going to write in third person, you should write in a way that your characters name isn’t repeated...more Kylie doesn’t know what she is. Kylie kisses a boy. For me, that was exactly what it was like reading this book. I remember I complained about the fact that Hunter didn’t use first person in the first installment of this series and unfortunately I have to do it again. In my opinion, if you’re going to write in third person, you should write in a way that your characters name isn’t repeated in almost every sentence because it’s very distracting and highly annoying especially when you’ve chosen to give your character a name like Kylie (not that Kylie is a horrible name but say it over and over and over again and you’ll never want to hear it again). Also, I am definitely NOT a genius when it comes to grammar but I’m pretty sure that I came across several editing issues because they made my brain stutter and I had to go back and reread to make sure that there really was a word missing or misspelled and I hadn’t completely lost my mind. There were also a few times that Hunter added words into Kylie’s vocabulary or made her say things in a way that I don’t think matched her usual voice or style. For example, once she made her think, Gawd, to herself. For one, no one say GAWD! Not even us southern folks and certainly not Kylie.
I’m not saying this story was horrible. I’m sure a teenaged girl would love all the supernatural characters and reading about their different abilities and such, I did. However, it seemed to drone on and on about things that after a while I didn’t find so interesting because it was basically the same things that the first book droned on and on about. Kylie doesn’t know what she is. Ok. I get it. She wants desperately to find out. OK. Let’s do that. And she does but it’s only a little bit here and there without really doing anything significant or intriguing. And do we have to play out the entire conversation about the exact same thing that she has with Holiday in every single chapter? I also thought the character took it a little too far with, “I can’t kiss Derek because I don’t know what I am, I can’t not kiss Derek because I don’t know what I am, I can’t make up my mind between Derek and Lucas because I don’t know what I am….”
Ok, NEXT! I thought the idea behind the bloody ghost that kept visiting her played out pretty well. I was actually expecting something a little different. The surprise was taken away with all the extras the closer it got to the reveal but I guess it was necessary. As for the not-so-climatic event I mentioned earlier… I really don’t know what else to say about it. There were no surprises, no twists, no turns. It was pretty cut and dry.
I wouldn’t tell people not to read this series because there are some things that are interesting, just not intriguing. I am curious to find out what Kylie is, although right now it feels like Hunter is making up a character that isn’t realistic not even in this paranormal world because of her little-bit-of-everything status. As if she’s some freaky hybrid or something. We don’t drop our characters in vats of toxic wastes anymore…. So, why make them a hybrid, nonrealistic anomaly?
