Once again an AWESOME BOOK!!!! Heather Vogal Frederick is one of my favorite authors who obviously knows how to please people. Yes the book was a bit shorter then expected but I totally luved it. Reading from Becca's point of view was interesting, even though she was never one of my favorite characters. As the girls test their friendships, everybody tells their vacation from a different place. There was a hilarious story about the secret Santa and of course Becca, Megan, Emma, Cassidy, and Jess...more

BEST. BOOK. EVER. I am curled up with my Betsy-Tacy Afghan and a box of tissues. Not because the book is sad! Because I am so happy! And a dork, but what can you do??!!

Summary: Loved it. Loved all the BT references. Technically, by adding the 5th girl, I found it harder to follow which girl was narrating each chapter. It would have been helpful to have the narrator's name on the top or bottom of each page, so an easy glance would remind you if Emma or Cassidy or whomever was talking. Also, addin...more

In this fifth installment of the Mother-Daughter Book Club series, the girls prepare for Christmas while reading the Maud Hart Lovelace Betsy-Tacy books. While they would all like to recreate the warm family environment of the books, all of the girls have some unheaval in their lives. Cassidy's family may move to California. Megan's British boyfriend breaks up with her. Becca's father is out of work. Jess suffers an injury that prevents her from going on a ski trip. Emma is busy, and all of the...more

Review from "Rosie Girl" formerly known as "Daisy Daughter"

Home for the Holidays is number five in the Mother/Daughter Book Club Series. This realistic fiction novel is about five teenage girls who leave their homes in Concord, Massachusetts for different winter vacations. The girls go on different adventures in Laguna Beach, New Hampshire, and even a Christmas Cruise to the Bahamas. Megan and Becca fight over the captain’s son while Cassidy visits her home state of California. An unexpected sle...more

Like Heather Vogel Frederick, I didn't grow up with the "Betsy-Tacy" books. They weren't a part of my childhood landscape. I only became aware of them a few years ago, and when they were republished in shiny new editions, I snapped them up eagerly, just like Emma does in Home for the Holidays. Just like for Emma, the prospect of getting to experience a literary treasure that I was unfamiliar with gave me chills. I ended up loving Betsy and all her adventures, and I couldn't have been happier whe...more

I really wanted to like this a lot, but it didn't really do it for me. At first, I couldn't understand why I didn't like it more, because all the references and things the characters loved I love. (Skating, England, Jane Austen and, of course, all things Betsy-Tacy.) I boiled it down to two major objections. First, the voice of each character sounded exactly alike. I had to check who was narrating each chapter multiple times and that was annoying. It's not enough to just have one character who's...more

Emma, Jess, Cassidy, Megan, Becca and their mothers are all back for a new season of the Mother-Daughter book club. This season the girls and their mothers will be reading the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. Since they will all be in different places for the Holidays they decide that they will celebrate together on New Year's Eve.

The girls have picked names among themselves to be Secret Santa to. As each girl opens their gifts each day they are disappointed in their Secret Santa. It see...more

This is another fun book in the Mother-Daughter Book Club series. This one might be one of my favorites--not because of the events that take place, which were a bit more boring than some of the other books, but because of the books the girls read this time. The Betsy-Tacy books have been in my top 10 list of favorite books for at least 25 years. I love them SO much! I had a ton of fun reading this book and enjoying the Betsy quotes, the Betsy references, and watching how the girls' lives mirrore...more

A perfect way to end the year, nicht wahr?

Sometimes the very fact that a book exists is enough to warrant five stars! Here the MDBC reads the wonderful, marvelous, fantastic Betsy-Tacy series (and all before Christmas, so I'm guessing the next installment will be in the Spring of the same year? I guess the girls are getting older too quickly!). My love for the B-T books knows no bounds, so I was automatically going to love this - and I was not disappointed as Heather incorporated our ornament ex...more

Well, I was supposed to wait until December 2013 to read this but patience's not being my forte (ahem), I got as far as mid-January before starting it (well done, I know :D).

And I'm glad I did! I totally enjoyed this dose of holidays cheer during a bleak month of January.

This was probably my fave book of the series so far. The girls are reading Betsy-Tacy books (which I've never heard of), but this time I focussed more on what's happening in their lives than on the book club events.

For the first...more

For four books I have been a dues-paying member of the “I Can’t Stand Becca Chadwick” club. Now, I may have to turn in my membership card. For the first time, Frederick adds Becca’s voice to the narrative, and while I can’t say that I like Becca, she at least now has my sympathy and I no longer actively dislike her. As always, the book is at its most authentic when exploring the relationships between the girls. This is especially true when the girls wear on each other after extended togetherness...more

Home for the Holidays follows the stories of five girls who are in a mother-daughter book club together. Each goes on their own adventure as they read the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. Megan, the fashionista, and Becca, the queen bee go on a Caribbean cruise and find themselves in a fight with each other because of a secret that Becca is keeping from Megan. Jess, the genius settles for Christmas in New Hampshire with Emma, the bookworm, after a sledding accident cancels her trip to Sw...more

Oh my gosh, so charming. The girls, now sophomores in high school, have decided to read the Betsy-Tacy series for their book club. The author hung around with many of the people I know and got everything just right. She pulled my favorite quotes and made my favorite allusions and reading about all of our BT fan traditions (ornament exchange!) was so much fun. And man, I've always wanted to try hosting a progressive dinner. It'd be so much fun.

I think I might have to buy this one. I don't really...more

Because I have never read the Betsy/Tacy books, I couldn't delve into the plot lines of this one like I have previous books in "The Mother Daughter Book Club." It also only spans a few weeks, as opposed to a year like the others, I felt it sped along too quickly.

That being said, I enjoy seeing where these characters, these girls find themselves. They are growing up and yet, they remain friends with each other (though not without misunderstandings, but who has ever had a friendship and NOT a misu...more

i liked this book, but it definitely wasn't my favorite in the series. perhaps because the main narrator of this installment is not one that i particularly care for. i also had a hard time keeping all the "voices" straight. there are a couple of characters whose voices are strong enough that in their chapters i know who is narrating, but there are a few others who are weak enough that i find myself checking back to the beginning of the chapter to see who is talking. and that was kind of annoying...more

This is a warm, cozy series that I would have wanted to live in as a middle schooler. Is it kind of cheesy & not terribly realistic at times? Yeah. But it's so full of nice characters & a lovely setting that you just don't care. Watching the lives of the five girls who form the mother-daughter book club's junior members change as they grow up is interesting, & seeing how their hopes, fears, & family lives affect the way they interact with each other is as well. The interaction wi...more

Home for the Holiday is the penultimate book in one of my favorite middle grade series, the Mother Daughter Book Club. We've been with these girls since they were eleven years old. Now they're fifteen turning sixteen. The book club goes on. The club even grew from four daughters to five. Now the girls consist of Emma, Cassie, Jess, Megan, and Becca.

Each book in the series is set during a different year in the girls' lives. In a slight twist, Home for the Holidays took place during the first half...more

AMAZING!!! My favorite mother-daughter book club book by far; the witty satire and major plot developments were the perfect thing for the holidays.
There were many things I had been waiting for that finally happened which made it even more fantastic. I loved the irony of how in a book entitled 'Home for the Holidays' none of the girls are actually home.

With the excitements of a broken leg, an untruthful rumor, a lost job, and the prospect of both gaining and possibly losing a member, this is a mu...more

I think that this book is great. The girls plan to have some fun together. Megan and Becca go on a cruise. Jess and Emma go to New Hampshire. It's supposed to be the perfect vacation for all of them, but something goes wrong. First of all, Jess has a broken leg and can't ski with everyone else. Megan's boyfriend broke up with her. And they have secret santas, but all their gifts are not what they expect them to be. Their mean and uncalled for. Something is definitely wrong. This book gives some...more

This christmas, the girls of the mother-daughter book club are anywhere but home for the holidays. On top of all the girls' crazy adventures, they are reading the beloved Betsy-Tacy series. But unfortunately, the holidays are not as the girls' expected. Between injuries, arguments, blizzards homesickness and heartbreaks, the Emma, Jess, Megan, Cassidy and Becca are in for a topsy-turvy holiday adventure. Will the girls be able to find their holiday spirit by Christmas?

I really enjoyed this book....more

This was a nice easy winter read, perfect to be read around the holidays. The girls in the Mother Daughter Book Club read the Betsy Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, which of course I am now dying to read myself. There is a LOT of boy drama and best friend fighting but it all gets worked out in the end with plenty of interesting things on the horizon bringing us into the next book in the series. I cannot recommend this series highly enough for tween or even teen girls. So refreshing and I love h...more

This was SUCH a GREAT book!!!!!!! In the book, along with Megan, Jess, Cassidy, and Emma's point of views, it also has Becca Chadwick's point of view. A christmas cruise gone wrong, a trip to New Hampshire with a horrific cousin, and the possibility of moving to California. What else could go wrong?! And to top it all off, Becca's dad has lost his job and she doesn't want ANYBODY to know. Plus, there are plenty more Christmas romances and crushes. I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I did...more

I am continually amazed at how Heather Vogel Frederick can keep this story going throughout the series in a new and exciting way each book with twists, turns, hardships, and happy endings. It's full of relatable issues and characters and I've been in love with the series since I started it in my school's own Mother-Daughter Book Club. This book did not disappoint my need for the characters and their lively discussion of some of my favorite classics, I can't wait for the next book when they tackl...more

ahhhh the last book in the series, both my daughter and I would have been okay with the series continuing.. but alas, this is a story about school age girls from middle school through high school years, so their journey into adulthood is not to be. HVF is a delightful writer, her work was both engaging to me the Mom and to my daughter who devoured her books. It was a very nice series to share with my daughter. Would be the perfect set of books for a mother/daughter book club... but then isn't th...more

As the Christmas season begins in Concord, snowflakes and magic are in the air for the mother-daughter book club. The girls are sophomores in high school and have now been friends for what feels like forever. For the first half of the school year, the club is reading the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. They’ve managed to do the impossible: find a series that Emma hasn’t read! This Christmas is bittersweet: none of the girls are going to be home for the holidays this year. Megan and Becc...more

This, the 5th installment of The Mother-Daughter Book Club series, covers the fall/winter of the girls' sophomore year in high school.
This time part-time "mean girl" Becca Chadwick lends her narrative to the story. Yes, this girl is a snot. But WHY is she a snot? WHY does she act the way she does? Through her own voice we are given another dimension to the Mother-Daughter Book Club experience.
The book club selection this time around is the "Betsy-Tacy" series by Maud Hart Lovelace. (This is pret...more

Absolutely loved it! I was relieved to know that the author had not heard of the Betsy Tacy books as a child, too. I am definitely checking those books out! I found it interesting to read some of the story from Becca's point of view, which by the end of the book, had me rethinking her personality somewhat. Like the addition of book club discussion questions, too! Hope there will be another book in the series!

Even though the girls are sophomores in high school, the story line is perfectly clean f...more

It's really a 3-star book, but because it incorporates Betsy-Tacy, it gets bumped up to 4 stars. I love the concept of these books, and I really liked the BT references in this volume, but overall, the multiple first-person narrators just don't work for me. I would find it all so much more believable coming from one omniscient narrator.

Anyway, I like the characters, and I'm very grateful to Heather for publicizing "our" books this way. I hope some new young fans will discover BT through the Moth...more
