Ray Ellis introduces readers to Detective Nathan (Nate) Richards in his debut police procedural, NHI: No Humans Involved. Nate’s faith is tested on multiple levels as he investigates the murder of a police officer, a teenager, and the ensuing slaughters of gang members. When his partner is shot while on a robbery call, Nate’s faith is further tested. Nate’s best friend, Amber, finds herself in harm’s way, and Nate struggles to let the investigation proceed according to departmental policy. Using...more
I thought this was a self-published book, but the front matter gives a publisher's name and website. When I checked it was an indie publisher with not that many authors in its line-up. Mm hmm, I see. So perhaps hiring a good editor is next on their budget list - just guessing - so, anyway, I'm going to assume that Ray Ellis did not get enough advice, rewrites, and editing to get N.H.I. (No Humans Involved) up to 4 or 5 stars.

This was an excellent first book by Ray Ellis! I enjoy reading books with a lot of action and suspense, and this book sure didn't disappoint me at all!
After I read the book I saw that it was a christian murder mystery. This book was not at all a church type book trying to preach to you. I have read non-christian books that have felt more preachy than this book. Don't get me wrong, it did have bible references in it, but they fit well into the story.

I'm not usually into detective/police stories, but I am so glad that I accepted this one for review. Suspense, drama, feeling and a dynamic plot combine to create a gripping story-line. I just simply couldn't put this book down- despite having been in a reading rut previously I stormed through this book within only a few days of hectic lifestyle. I had to force myself to go to sleep at night, feeling so connected with Nate and his girlfriend that I simply wanted to find out what would happen nex...more
The story was ok. The author's writing was pretty good. Overall I enjoyed the read for the story itself. What I didn't like much was how preachy things got. Yeah, Nate obviously comes from a religious background where his father is a preacher. There was just TOO much references, with quotes, to the Bible for me. Had I known how religious the people were in the book, I wouldn't have purchased them.

Ray Ellis in his debut book has introduced us to a new and exciting character, Nate Richards. Richards is a police officer who uses his cop instincts and his faith in God to solve crimes. In Ellis' book, NHI- No Humans Involved, Richards must deal with plenty of problems that test not only his skills as a cop but it also brings into question his faith.
I truly enjoyed this page turning book, not expecting what was around each corner. I can't wait to see what will happen to Nate next! Thanks Ray f...more

N.H.I. is the first book I've read by Ray Ellis, but I certainly hope it's not the last - I really want to read D.R.T. (book two in this series).
N.H.I. starts out with Detective Nate Richards investigating the crime scene of a teenage boy's murder (possibly gang related), which made me interested in the story pretty much from then on!
I loved most of the characters and the way a few acted towards each other. Nate and Lieutenant Brown did not get along...more

N. H. I.: No Humans Involved is a debut Christian murder mystery novel from author Ray Ellis.
Nate Richards is a rookie detective in Treasure City, who has strong religious convictions and he uses his instincts and his faith in the Lord, to solve his crimes. Many in the bureau finds his methods odd but they grudgingly give their respect to him, for he does his job well.

I really loved the work of Ray Ellis. This debut novel is fantastically written, gripped me and pulled me into the midst of chaotic street gangs, and rookie detectives. I love crime novels, I love the awesome suspense that comes with them, and this book is definitely overflowing with the suspense and the crime.

NHI combines a captivating story line with believable characters. The primary characters are well developed. The interplay is believable. Being familiar with the area, I'm not sure why Ray chose to use a fictional name for the city but actual location names. However, I think that factor would only be distracting to someone familiar with the area.
All in all, a good read and I'm looking forward to moving on to his next book.

Was an OK lunch read. Found hard to follow in spots.
