لكن ما لفت انتباهى فى تلك الروايه هو ذلك الجزء المقزز عن نظاقه الجسد و اكرر وصف القذاره هنا هو مجرد وصف و ليس انتقاد..فالروايه تتناول تفاصيل مفصله عن تنظيف الاذن و اخراج المخاط من الانف بل و حتى تفاصيل التبرز...لا ادرى لماذا شعرت بكل هذا القرف من تفاصيل انسانيه يوميه مع انها اشياء معروفه للبشر كلهم و تستهلك من يومهم ما يزيد عن ربعه حسب الدراسات الطبيه ....هذه ملحوظه تستحق الدراسه فى حد ذاتها فالانسان لا يخجل او يتقزز من فعل الشئ لكن قراءته على ورق يسبب لهم الغثيان

قررت فى وسط الروايه بأنى سأكملها فقط لاكتشف اذا كان ما وراء كل هذا الكم من الاباحه اى معنى اكبر او قصه محكمه التفاصيل...فاما الاول فلم احدد تفاصيل ذلك الهدف الاسمى ,و اما القصه فالى حدا ما جاءت النهايه مفاجاه نوعا كنوع من التعويض لغياب الدراما طوال الروايه

لم اشعر بثقل الترجمه و بالتالى فتكون الترجمه متقنه فالمترجم الجيد فى نظرى هو من لا يثقلنى بوجوده و كأنى اقرأ روايه مكتوبه بالعربيه اصلا

“In Praise of the Stepmother” is a thought-provoking fantasia on innocence, sex, and art which never fails to force us into questioning our most precious of assumptions. Not wishing to have our own little bourgeois moralities threatened is, I suppose, one reason why many people have dismissed this novel as “disgusting” or “immoral” or something equally nonsensical.

At its core rests a simple story. After a failed marriage with his young son Alfonso’s mother, Don Rigoberto marries Dona Lucrecia,...more “In Praise of the Stepmother” is a thought-provoking fantasia on innocence, sex, and art which never fails to force us into questioning our most precious of assumptions. Not wishing to have our own little bourgeois moralities threatened is, I suppose, one reason why many people have dismissed this novel as “disgusting” or “immoral” or something equally nonsensical.

At its core rests a simple story. After a failed marriage with his young son Alfonso’s mother, Don Rigoberto marries Dona Lucrecia, a woman whom he truly adores and is certainly erotically infatuated with. On the first page of the novel, Alfonso, a boy of ten or twelve, leaves a note on his stepmother’s pillow congratulating her on her fortieth birthday, and saying that he will do his best to become first in his class to reward her. This is the inaugurating move in a cat-and-mouse game that drives the entire novel forward in a series of events that reaches its apex in a lurid sexual encounter between Alfonso and Lucrecia which occurs while Rigoberto is on a business trip. She does not deliberately set out to do this, yet still has found herself titillated by the occasional fugitive thought of her and her stepson in coitus. At the very end of the novel, we find out that Alfonso wrote an essay for school in which he details his erotic relationship with his mother and, to make matters worse, read it to his father. Why? We don’t know. In the last pages of the book, the housekeeper asks Alfonso why he would do such an insidious thing to the stepmother he loved so much, to which he replies, “I did it for you,” seemingly setting the entire wheel rolling toward tragedy and destruction once more.

Vargas Llosa artfully interlards the worlds of the erotic and sensual (the lovemaking of Lucrecia and Rigoberto) with Rigoberto’s mundane daily ablutions – the trimming of his nose hairs, the application of cologne to his body, the special care that he gives his feet and hands. This spiritual aubade to the body, which apparently bored so many readers, is what drew me in and made turned the reading into an almost ecstatic experience. This was only heightened by the six exquisite colored plates that are placed in the novel to accentuate themes in the story.

Alfonso’s duplicity (or was it duplicity after all?) asks, as Slavoj Zizek has done by other means, “Isn’t love the ultimate act of violence?” After this novel, it is impossible not to see the ulterior and tenebrous underbelly of the most innocent of gestures. Whose desire is outlawed, Lucrecia’s or the boy’s? Can Don Rigoberto somehow turn outside that scrutiny to which he so easily applies to himself in his daily bath in order to answer what has happened under his roof? Some of these questions are never answered, but the way Vargas Llosa asks them makes reconciling one’s self to the novel and its moral imperatives deliciously fun.

i really-really liked llosa's style in this book. i don't care that everybody considers it an erotic novel, i could feel the fullness and the richness of the language even if i read it in translation [a very good one]. llosa juggles with words and synonyms and there's no way one becomes bored with the book. maybe i sound a bit over-enthusiastic, the truth is it doesn't often happen to me to like someone's words and phrases so much.

ce mi-a placut foarte mult [aceeasi tehnica am remarcat-o si in "matusa julia si condeierul"]: capitolele povestirii propriu-zise se intercaleaza cu unele diferite, in cazul de fata unele care ne introduc in lumea artei [don rigoberto este un pasionat colectionar de arta], in care personajele de pe pinza devin pe rind naratori, depanindu-si povestioarele de amor din perspectiva proprie.

Brave adventure into the human soul, and you need to be brave to understand the full power of the book - brave enough to admit that it is not about some abstract people, but about things that can happen and at times do happen in your own head.

Para mí escribir esa novela fue un experimento divertido que me permitió emplear un lenguaje muy rico y preciosista que no utilizo jamás en mis obras, en las que el lenguaje es muy funcional, siempre en relación con lo que quiero contar. En el Elogio había un juego formal que permitía contar la historia con un lenguaje rebuscado, muy poco realista. En Los cuadernos de Don Rigoberto, sin embargo, el erotismo es más intelectual. Hay juego, pero en menor medida que en Elogio de la madrastra. Allí el lenguaje ya no es el mismo, no podía serlo. La historia tenía más pretensiones realistas y el lenguaje es, no diré más crudo, pero sí que está menos presente. En el Elogio el lenguaje es casi un espectáculo por sí mismo, una presencia que se interpone entre el lector y la historia".

I first read this book on the island of Spetses around 20 years ago - having picked it up randomly at a small bookstore. It was one of the only books in English - albeit translated from the original Peruvian Spanish.

I have re-read this book several times- and it remains one of my favourites. Mario Vargas Llosa is well deserving of his Nobel Prize for Literature and has the Latin American skill for wonderfully evocative descriptions.

While ostensibly an erotic story it is really much more sensual...more

مجازاً سأطلق عليها رواية
ولكنها لا يجب ان تصنف على هذا الاساس بل على اساس انها مشاهد بورنو خالصة، فقد اعتقد المؤلف انه بوضع بعض حكاوى الاساطير فى بعض الفصول سيضفى عليها قيمة ادبية !!! او عند كتابة نهايتها المتوقعة فانها ستحظى ببعد انسانى ؟!! لا اعتقد انها اكتسبت هذا البعد.
ولكن اللافت للنظر هو تقييم بعض القراء لهابأكثر من نجمة!!!!! و المديح المبالغ فيه وكأن عقدة الخواجة وصلت حتى الى الادب و الثقافة بالرغم من مهاجمتهم.. (نفس القراء).. لبعض الروايات لادباء مصريين ... ملء السمع و البصر... تمتلىء رواي...more

¡(Casi) poesía escatológica!

Confieso haber leído ese capítulo de la novela, titulado “Las abluciones de Don Rigoberto”, dos veces. La prosa es precisa, económica. Y las imágenes son certeras. Porque parece que de eso se trata. Vargas Llosa promueve una serie de imágenes narrativas y visuales para elaborar desde ellas hilos eróticos y perversos tan perfectamente coordinados que el librito de 200 páginas se va en tres días, o menos.

Don Rigoberto, un viejo coleccionista de arte y amante empedernido de Lucrecia, la madrastra, disfruta de los placeres del cuerpo. Uno de esos placeres deriva de la contemplación del arte: Tiziano, de Szyzlo, Boucher, Fra Angelico. Junto con la imparable libido de Lucrecia, Don Rigoberto interpreta las obras, las performea entre sábanas y cuartos de baño. Las obras de arte juegan un papel preponderante en la estructuración de las fantasías eróticas de la pareja y hasta de una que otra trama perversa que al final, de modo sorprendente, rompe con nuestras expectativas (Fonchito, el entenado, es bello y perverso, todo un ejemplo de la literatura romántica del siglo diecinueve). La mirada, del espectador a la obra de arte, de la obra de arte a los personajes, de los personajes a la obras, de las obras al espectador (la novela viene ilustrada con las obras en cuestión) es definitivamente multidimensional. Permite a Don Rigoberto historizar sus miedos y fantasías (es un sibarita, un hedonista y tiene miedo de la decadencia del cuerpo). Quiere inmortalizarse, encapsularse de la misma manera que yacen en su sala, en su vitrina bajo llave, su colección de dibujos eróticos. La contemplación estética y el cuidado riguroso de sí son “su manera de sustraerse momentáneamente a la ruin decandencia y las servidumbres edilicias de la civilidad, a las convenciones abyectas del rebaño, para alcanzar, por un breve paréntesis del día, una naturaleza soberana” p132.

El erotismo es, pues, una subjetividad peligrosa. Difícil asirla en la obra abstracta y, sin embargo, en esta novela un niño motiva la interpretación libidinosa de un cuadro abstracto de Szyzlo. El erotismo es un arma con la que se declaran y ganan guerras. Esta novela lo demuestra. Y es, evidentemente, un ligero velo que cada uno pone según su soberano gusto. ¡Ya no hablemos de apropriación! ¿Qué estudios culturales ni qué tres cuartos?! La obra existe porque provoca sensaciones, libera sensualidades, afecta de manera inmediata al espectador como lo ilustran los orgasmos y cabalgatas nocturnas de la pareja protagonista. El arte es útil. El arte es liberador. El arte es universal y tangible (También elitista y personal; aquí no cabe ni la galería ni el museo). Allí ya no cabe el artista; solamente el puente que se construye entre espectador e imagen. El arte es personal.

¡Que no se le pare a Don Rigoberto si miento!

رواية إيروتيكية

هناك النَص، وماوراء النَص

النص مليء بالتفاصيل التي أحيانا كانت تمر على عقلي وكأنها بالتصوير البطيء، ليست مملة، لكنها اقتطاع للحظات القصيرة في الحياة التي نظنها ليست مهمة إطلاقًا، ما المميز مثلًا في تنظيف الأسنان، أو قص أظافر القدم؟

لكن في سياق الطقوس التي يتضمنها فعل الحب، تكتسب هذه التفاصيل أهميتها. ويصبح التركيز عليها فيه نوع من الحميمية مع النَص، أنا طول الوقت في موضع المتلصصة على الأبطال، أراهم ولا يروني.

أعجبنى جداً تطور الشخصيات – أو بعبارةٍ أدق ؛ مراحل الكشف عن كل شخصية عبر تطور أحداث الرواية – و فى الفصل الأخير ذكرنى الطفل " ألفونسو " بالأطفال الذين يظهرون – أبطالا أو شخصيات محورية – فى أفلام الرعب :).

للحظات ، عمد يوسا – و أظنه ناجحاً فى ذلك – على إزالة الصروح التى بنيناها لقرون طويلة – فى أذهاننا و مشاعرنا – لتقف سداً حائلاً مانعاً بين ما أسميناه " المعنوى الشعورى "، و جعلناه متذرعاً بكل ما أمددناه من عدد ثم جعلناه يتمترس على طرفٍ ، و " المادى الحسى " ، و الذى لم نكتفِ بتوطينه الطرف الآخر وحسب مكتفين بدلالات كلمة " آخر " و إنما حرصنا أن نكون محددين – فى غينا – بجعل هذا الطرف هو طرف النقيض.

يبدأ يوسا ببناء بعض جسور الحوار بين الطرفين المعاديين – كما تواطأت نفوسنا مع التاريخ لجعلهما كذلك – ثم – و بتدرج مذهل – لاتلبث هذه الجسور أن تزداد و يبنى فيما بينها جسور أخرى عرضية ، فتلتصق حواف الجسور الكثيرة لتصل إلى ما يبدو و كأنه قد كان حقيقةً أزليةً مطموسة.

إذ نصل - أثناء القراءة - إلى التوحد الكامل بين عنصرى الجسد الواحد – الذى طالما سعينا لتمزيقه – فالأمر – بعد قليل – يتعدى حد بناء بعض الجسور بين الحب – المعنوى – و الممارسات الإيروتيكية – الحسية – و إنما يصل إلى كل الحدود – التى تواطأنا على ملئها بالألغام – فتدرك حينها أن التغوط مثلا – و هو فعل مادى فى ظاهره – إنما هو درب حيوى لا يخلو أبداً من كل ما يميز الحياة و بالطبع يمكننا أن نجد ما قد أصررنا على تسميته " خصال روحية " فى هذا الفعل ، متماهيةً تماماً مع كل دقائقه الحسية – كما نزعم أيضاً.

لم يكن ذلك – ما فعله يوسا – عظيماً فقط لأنه عمل على إخماد معارك تاريخية قامت بين عنصرى الحياة ، و إنما قد تكمن عظمته أيضاً فى أنه أزاح – و لو أثناء قراءتك لصفحات الرواية المعدودة فحسب – عن كاهلك إحساسك الدائم بالدنس و النجاسة التى لا أمل معها ، ذلك الإرث التاريخى الذى حرصنا على إبقائه أصيلا مادامت الحياة.

في مشهد مأساوي ،يتخلى الهو عن الأنا ،ويتركه منفردا مع أناه الأعلى ،يتقدم الأنا معتذرا عن قراءته للرواي في خطبة ملحمية :
"تعلم يا أناي ألأأعلى ،حق العلم ،أني لم أقرأ الرواية بتمعن ،بل مجرد تصفح لسريع ،كل أرد على افكارها المشبوهة ،وكما تعلم ويعلم الجميع ،أنني أول وأشد من يرفض الهبوط بالانسان من علياء الروح ،إلى حضيض الرغبة ،إننا نحتاج في عصر العلمنة ،إلى شئ يتسانى بشهواتنا ....إلخ "

امتداح الخالية رواية للكاتب العالمي " ماريو برغاس يوسا "اين خرج من خلالها عن الأنساق الأدبية الذي اعتاد الكتابة عنها مثل البحث عن الخلاص الإنساني والتحرر السياسي ، فقد دخل هذه المرة بطريقة أدبية مذهلة إلى عالم الجسد ، من خلال استلهام قصة زوجين منفتحين على الحضارات القديمة وتراثها الجسدي ،أين جعلوا من غرفته الزوجية مكان لتجميع كل التجارب الإنسانية عبر الاحتفال بالجسد .

تترك السيدة لوكيرثا مخضع الزوجية وتذهب لملاقاة ابن زوجها حيث غمرتها مشاعر الفرحة خاصة بعد تبدد تلك المخاوف الكثيرة، اين كانت تفكر أنها ستعاني بزواجها هذا ادا لم يتقبلها الولد الوحيد لزوجها .
يمثل زوج السيدة "لوكيرثا" السيد "دون ريغرتوا" ذلك الإنسان المنفتح على ثقافات العالم ،كما أن لديه ان تعرفه على الثقافات الجنسية المختلفة على غرار الحضارة "التانترية" وكذلك طقوس الكماستورا جعله يهنئ بحياة جنسية سعيدة مع زوجته التي تذهله يوما بعد يوم ، حيث اعتبر نفسه يعيش في الجنة بما ان لديه زوجة مثل السيدة لوكيرثا وابن مؤدب إضافة أنه يحصد ابهر النتائج المدرسية .
تمثل روعة رواية امتداح الخالة نموذج راقي للروايات الإيروتكية حيث أن كل مشهد يحدث في حياة الزوجين إلا وكان له علاقة بنصوص اريتكية قديمة ،مثل صورة الملك التركي "قندواليس" الذي رسمت لوحة لزوجته أثناء امتداحه لروعة جسدها أمام وزرائه حيث يحضر الالق الجنسي والرغبة في تجاوز الانا عبر التحرر من الطاقة الجنسية .
يهدف "ماريو برغاس يوسا" من دخوله إلى عالم الجنس إلى إعطاءه معنى جديد للجسد خاصة وان الممارسة الجنسية أصبحت تكاد ما تكون سطحية في حياة الزوجين ،حيث صنع من نصوصه الجانب الجمالي من الجسد ، أين حاول القول أن النضج النفسي وإعطاء دافع الإثارة هما عاملان مهمان لاستمرار الحياة الزوجية .
لم يتوقف "ماريو برغاس يوسا" عند موضوع السعادة الزوجية في السرير الأسري بل تعداها إلى الرغبات التي تؤرق حياة شخصياته العاطفية ، إذ نجد أن الطفل المدلل أصبح يتحرش بزوجة والده كونه مغرم بها ولا يهمه نتائج هذا الإقدام الخطير ،اذ يتجسس عليها أثناء استحمامها عبر فتحة هوائية ،الا ان وصل به الامر الى النوم معها في اخر المطاف في سرير والده .
يكشف الطفل المدلل علاقته بزوجة أبيه لوالده ،عبر طريقة شيطانية ، أين كتب تعبير انشائي ليعبر عن حبه لزوجة ابيه ،حيث وصف كل الأحداث الجنسية التي دارت بينهما ،ليطرد الأب زوجته في الأخير ويمثل الولد الصغير صورة الشيطان في جسد ملائكي ،لانه خطط لأمر طردها مند البداية .

This books deals with a very taboo topic so it may not be for everyone. That being said, and without giving away any spoilers, I will say it was a beautifully written story. I think if you decide you are going to read this book it should not be on an “ereader” (e.g., Nook), but that is because the artwork that is depictured in this book is so pleasant to view on paper and in context with the chapter in which it is placed.

A strange demonic and erotic piece of writing. Liosa explores all the sensual depths of the human body and teaches the reader how to care about it. It is an erotic dream which thrives on the amoral atmosphere around it. The end is a puzzle but the point as I see it concerns how modernism stripped the human body of all restraints. There is a sequel to it I must read.

It's funny how things stick in your head.

I remember reading this and thinking "These stories are supposed to be erotic? Am I really supposed to be turned on by loving descriptions of some guy clipping his toenails in a certain shape, or another one cleansing out his colon? Really?"

Then I got older, and realized that people are far more fucked up than the folk Vargas Llosa wrote about.

قبل أي شيء.. مبسوطة إن الولد الصغير طلع شرير الفيلم في الآخر!

عجبتني فكرة الحكاية من داخل لوحة.. برغم إنها مش جديدة علي
لا أذكر قرأت مثلها فين تحديدًا.. يمكن في خيالي فقط.
الرواية كويسة.. إيروتيكية بعيدة عن المبالغة..
قصيرة نسبيًا، ومع ذلك، فيها تفاصيل كتير قد تكو مملة أو مقززة أحيانًا -الأجزاء المتعلقة بنظافة الجسد، فيها شيء منفر وحيواني كده- لكنها مهمة، اختزالها كان هيعمل خلل في السياق.

Nunca é demais dizer o quão impressionante é poder ler obras de autores capazes de pegarem em temas simples e montarem uma história com vida e capaz de cativar o leitor, mantendo-o agarrado ao livro. Nesta obra, o ponto forte são os personagens, representados por uma família pouco convencional e uma empregada, e as interações entre eles.

No quarto de Lucrécia e dom Rigoberto não existem inibições, os prazeres da carne são elevados ao expoente máximo e o acto de satisfazer e deixar-se satisfazer são as únicas regras.
Alfonso, um menino mais "crescido" que a sua idade, é um lobinho em pele de cordeiro e sabe bem como dar a volta aos outros, sempre com a sua disfarçada inocência de criança.

Através da outra paixão de dom Rigoberto e da obsessão de Alfonso pelo austríaco Schielle, Vargas Llosa, através das gravuras e quadros do pintor que introduzem os capítulos, faz o paralelismo entre o enredo e o erotismo de Lucrécia, em particular, e de todas as mulheres, em geral.

I recently read and enjoyed Death in the Andes, my first Mario Vargas Llosa novel. To bolster my poor knowledge of and feeling for South American literature, I thought to read another of his, and the one I ended up with, just almost at random, was In Praise of the Stepmother.

This novel is light, almost too light. I would not recommend it at all if you're used to eroticism in books serving a high purpose. It seemed like a peculiar, less direct, cheap erotic novel. If there's anything good about this book, it's the way Llosa describes things (not necessarily what he chooses to describe.) If you want good literature with philosophized eroticism, read something by Kundera and skip this one.

I read this many years ago, but now that Mario Vargas Llosa has won the Nobel Prize, it's time to return to his work. This book was embarrassing to read. I was young and naive when I read it, and I thought it was pure pornography. It was also arresting in ways that pornography probably can't be. I'd stumbled on the book. Now I'll go back and look for this writer's work and explore the work that brought him to the attention of the Nobel judges.
