Just how much information is too much information? This is something each fan of the Harry Potter movies need to ask themselves before buying the book. Harry Potter Page To Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey is a book that promises to do exactly like the title says. It gives the complete story of the filmmaking process of the Harry Potter movie franchise. Do some people, who've probably closed the chapter to that part of their life when the last movie came out last July, actually want to kn...more
Harry Potter Page To Screen is a narrative from the producer's skepticism (at first) towards Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, to the making of every movie, to the actors, to the settings, to the props, and down to the last day of the filming. There were also a hundred of photos taken from the set. I specifically love all the concept arts. Since the book was a big one, the images were quite big and you can see everything in detail.

This book exceeded all my expectations, and it certainly befits the Harry Potter film saga.
This is a large format 532-page hardcover. It's so huge and hefty so you can't really hold it for reading without resting it on something, like your lap. The cover is beautifully designed with an embossed title and a window looking at Hogwarts.
There are three parts to the book. The first is "The Making of Harry Potter" and covers the complete film making process of all the seve...more
I felt like a character in Harry Potter while carrying around this monster of a tome! It offers a highly detailed, fascinating look at the making of the movies, complete with my favorite part: The Art of Harry Potter. My mind boggles at how much concept art, props, set design, and more went into the films; and the paintings, miniatures, and costumes are incredible to see. There are lots of fun "did you know" type of tidbits, including:

I often begrudge movies the fact that they are not like the book, but it's really like comparing apples and oranges-- though similar, they are inherently different.
It was fascinating to read what each actor thought of their own character-- Fiona Shaw had the most keen insights into her character of Mrs. Dursley that has sparked within me a desire to revisit the early HP novels and pay closer attention to the lesser-focused Dursley dynamic between the matriarch and her nephew (that is often overs...more

Emotional! If you are a fan of the movies you will truly enjoy this book. Being a part of the fandom while the movies were being made makes it that much more special when I read about it. If I read a book on the making of Star Wars it would be cool, but I wouldn't feel the emotion because I wasn't alive when they made the original three. I was born in 1982. But, with Harry Potter I was there with the anticipation of the next book, the next movie, the next whatever. When I look at behind the scen...more
What an amazing book! Everything I expected and more.
The book consists of a detailed chapter on each of the films, characters, costumes, locations, sets, creatures, makeup /digital effects, artifacts and prop making.
It's very well written, and the balance between photos and information is just right. The behind the scenes anecdotes and unknown tidbits, really make this an interesting and enjoyable read. All of the sections were informative, without tipping over into the over detailed, boring a...more
This gargantuan tome details every stage of the process that transformed the J.K. Rowling books into the Warner Bros. movies. When the movies originally came out, I was seriously disappointed with the obvious discrepancies from movie to movie as well as some of the missing plot (as almost every fan of the books was, I suppose). This book gave me a look at the decision making process that the producers, directors, and most importantly the screenplay writer followed, and allowed for a better under...more
An amazing Christmas gift... no way is this amazing volume going to be merely a coffee table book. I plan to read it cover-to-cover and soak up every amazing little detail that went into making this series.
It's fun to see which anecdotes I remember from magazine articles over the years, and which details are entirely new...

How I Came To Read This Book: I believe I first saw it in Entertainment Weekly and thought it'd be a good fit for my blog, so I requested a review copy.
The Plot: This is basically an encyclopaedia to everything on the Harry Potter films. The first half of the book is the 'story' of the eight films (although Deathly Hallows is combined into one chapter), including getting them made in the first place, before the series was the phenomenon it became. Each film is discussed in terms of how the casti...more

This book was underwelming for me. I've never been a huge fan of the Potter movies(mostly because they leave so much out that I love about the books), but if you're going to spend this kind of money on a book about the films, you're much better off buying the Film Wizardry book that was released last year. At almost half the cost, it has as many amazing photos and actual pullouts and inserts and focuses more on the individual characters and settings, where this book has no extras and focuses mor...more
Amazing, in both content and size. Great stories, tons of information for Potter fans, gorgeous photos and concept drawings. My one complaint (well, besides the fact that you need major muscles to try to hold this book in any way while you're reading it): Where the heck are the main characters' pets, and especially Hedwig, Harry's owl, in all of this? I saw one photo in this whole gigantic book of Harry and Hedwig that mentioned the owl's name beneath it, and that was that. It just seems that in...more
At first, I was in love with this book. I am a big fan of the books and then the movies, and I always wondered how they adapted those wonderful books for the big screen. There is just so much information in this book, and it is presented artistically through pictures as well as words. When I finished it, I felt like I knew so much more than I could have ever asked for. However, after a while, I realized that something was missing. The book discussed the changing directors and how they brought th...more
Really, really cool behind-the-scenes information about the production of the Harry Potter movies. I learned so much about the Harry Potter universe, the actors, and the way movies are made. Like the fact that Mafalda Hopkirk was played by Sophie Thompson, the younger sister of Emma Thompson, and Bill Weasley was played by Brendan Gleeson's son Domhnall. And that the prop crew bought sixteen Ford Anglias from around the country to use in filming. That most of the amazing props and sets were real...more
The first time I saw this, I flipped out. As someone who's obsessed with all things Harry Potter, I just had to get my hands on this massive book. Reading it was even more fun than I thought it would be. It goes through the entire process of making each movie, from selecting the cast to writing the scripts to bringing the incredible magic to life on screen. It's got the big-picture stuff, like the different directors' and producers' visions, as well as the details, like how they made each magica...more

Potterheads will be drooling over this massive, spellbook size, dictionary-heavy encyclopedia of the Harry Potter films.
First things first, this book is MASSIVE. It's as big as my whole torso and a heavy as (maybe even heavier) than a dictionary. The cover is beautiful though. It's like a window looking to Hogwarts. It looks like a spellbook. My dad didn't expect me to actually read the whole thing. This was mine and my mum's conversation when I picked up the book:

I spotted this book in a bookshop shortly before Christmas and couldn't keep my eyes off it. The size of the collosal object catches your attention immediately and the covers are of a prestige and beautiful material. To my wonderful surprise, my boyfried must have noticed my infatuation as he purchased me the book for Christmas. It is now one of my most prized possesions. I sat for hours delving into the mostly unseen world of the transformation of J K Rowling's incredible story into the fantast...more

Wow. Just wow.
As soon as I got this book, I knew I would have to read it cover to cover to really feel complete. I couldn't just skim, I had to know everything! And it was lovely and so rewarding. I knew a lot of stuff, granted, but that's what comes with being so immersed in this universe for so long.
This book really made me appreciate the movies more. I could understand more why they chose to do certain things, appreciate the changes they made. I loved the stories offered by the actors and the...more

I loved every page of this book, as I loved every page of JK Rowling's masterpieces and the wonderful films that followed. Great detail about costume and setting design as well as many personal insights from the actors, the directors and JK Rowling's take on and input for the films. My only critic is that McCabe did not include anything about the music for the films, which were composed by John Williams, Alexandre Desplat, Nicholas Hopper and Patrick Doyle. The only mention of music that I found...more
This book was quite interesting in how they made the Harry Potter movies, although, obviously, it did not compare to the Harry Potter books. A few interesting factoids learned from this volume:
1) the first thing Rupert Grint (Ron) did with his acting check was buy an ice cream truck. Sounds about right for a 12 year old.
2) Michael Gambon (crappy Dumbledore) never even bothered to read the books. No wonder he royally sucked.
3) James Phelps (Fred) worked as an assistant director on one movie, and...more

“Harry Potter: Page to Screen” was really fun to read. It gives a great inside look at how the films were made. I especially enjoyed the beautiful photographs and the funny anecdotes provided by the actors. Here are a few of my favorite tidbits:
- Michael Gambdon (the 2nd, and far worse Dumbledore) never even read the books!!!! No wonder he didn’t have a clue how Dumbledore should act.
- James Phelps (Fred Weasley) worked as a runner on the set of the HP films. Matt Lewis took advantage and always...more

I'll just come out and say it: I freaking love Harry Potter. I loved the books as a child, I went to the cinema to see the movies as an adult and I still revel in anything Potter. Simple and to the point - this is a brilliant book for anyone who loves Harry Potter, especially the movies.

Oh my goodness - this book is like a giant, fabulous fireworks display. You hardly know where to look and can hardly sit still it's so awesome. As much as I loved that other HP Film Wizardry book, this one is even MORE amazing. It's about 4 times bigger, for one thing.
It has all the details on how the movies were made. The costumes, the sets, the graphic designs (which killed me). It's so much fun to look through this book and see the why and how of the way the Harry Potter movies look.

I think this book is fantastic for anybody that loved the books but was iffy on the movies, or anybody that's interested in the process of getting a book turned into a movie. It really gives a new understanding to the reasons why the filmmakers did things, and I find myself liking some of my least favorite Potter movies a lot more, if only because I know why they took the liberties they did. Reading through the story of each movie, I really felt like I was getting to know the people involved wit...more

This gargantuan tome of Potter information was wonderful. There are so many little stories about the actors and their journeys to Potter, the interplay between them and their thoughts on the characters that every Potter fan will be happy to read this book. I really wanted more information but the book could only be so big. There were nice pictures but I wanted to see more behind the scenes photos than there were, but the book as is was amazing. All Potter fans will enjoy this backstage view of d...more
This was a pleasant surprise that I found and lugged home from the library. I figured I would just page through it, but ended up renewing it so I could actually read all the behind-the-scenes info. The amount of detail that went into making these movies and creating the world of the HP films was cah-razy. I mean, there are plenty of details--individualized wands, for example--that the average viewer wouldn’t even notice but probably made the artists feel awesome to create. My respect for moviema...more

This is pretty much Hogwarts a History, but about the films. Fans of the movies and films will enjoy this coffee-table worthy book filled with page after page of quotes from the cast and crew, interspersed with fantastic never-before-seen photos of the production process. I feel like you really don't need to be a film buff to enjoy this. There are interviews with major and minor actors, and some crew members I never even knew existed. The thought and work that went in to creating most every seen...more
