The Staring Owl
by Luke Edwards
The Staring Owl finds it hard to fit in. Having been brought up to stare at everything and everyone, he finds that most people, and even the ducks at the park, don't enjoy that level of scrutiny. Although he can always go the art gallery and stare at the paintings, Staring Owl wants more than anything a career that will suit his unique talents. What can that be?

This is such a funny, quirky book. Even its size is not the standard for a Picture Book. Lots of humour will go over little ones' heads, but adults will enjoy reading this to their children again and again. Illustrations are grey scale, except for all the big, yellow, staring eyes, but the pics convey heaps of personality. Children should be thoroughly entertained by them and this fun tale about finding your place in the world...and helping others to find theirs.
This is a great message for kids (and a good reminder for parents), packaged up in the sort of humour the adult reader can appreciate. But not all the humour goes over the little ones' heads - there's enough absurdity to keep them giggling, even if they don't quite latch on to the more sophisticated jokes. Plus, they might learn what "homo sapiens" means. All good.
