I read an earlier edition, ca. 1982.

It's symptomatic of this book that its contents could be cut down to of its current size. A great example: "By definition, the electric field of a point charge always points away from a posi- tive charge (that is, in the same direction as rN; see Fig. 21.17b) but toward a neg- ative charge (that is, in the direction opposite rN; see Fig. 21.17c)."

This could be turned into just a single line: "By convention, electric field lines go from a positive to a negative point test charge (see Fig. xx)".

Shelves: physics
Good read for those who would want a certain amount of knowledge for transition into more rigorous physics. I skipped the last four chapters due to lack of depth; some chapters are better read from self-contained texts such as condensed matter physics and atomic physics. This book is good to build foundational knowledge on more basic topics like mechanics, optics and electromagnetism which do not require one to master advanced mathematics just to grasp its basic ideas.

Very thorough textbook for at least first undergraduate level physics of any topic. I read this twice and this book suffices to clear up basic misconceptions and prepare for advanced courses.

For a simple mind like me... This book is clearer than the one from Halliday & Resnick

Simple, easy to understand. It's a shame I don't like physics.
