The Rafters by ACMontgomery is a complex story that fuses a fantasy realm with the trappings of modern urban society.
Although I initially found myself struggling with the storys complexity, I found the maps at the front and the character reference at the back of the book extremely helpful. Once I had the cast straight, the pace of the book picked up and moved quite well.
I really appreciated that she doesn't shine a big spotlight on who is the "good guy" or the "bad guy", but let her character...more

This is quite possibly the worst book I've ever read. At the beginning, I was able to tolerate the extensive, mundane details of this surreal world because I assumed the wordiness would cease once the author had finished describing the setting ad nauseam. Nope! Just when I thought she'd utilized every adjective in existence, the author obviously (obviously!) pulled out a thesaurus and went to town. Unfortunately, not every synonym listed under a word is contextually correct.

I honestly don't know...more

A young Calling, ignorant of his purpose and importance, is adrift (both literally and figuratively) while around him, shadowy men and women play dangerous games of power. A blend of traditional science fiction and urban fantasy, The Rafters is but a peek at a world built of dark and light energy.

Some people are born storytellers, and I think A.C. Montgomery might be one. The weaving together of multiple main character storylines is difficult to do, but I think she pulls it off, with some stumbl...more

I was actually very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The amount of detail in the book is great. The author does a great job at creating an atmosphere that allows you to really visualize your surroundings. Everything from the characters, the cities, and the buildings are described very well. The story is pretty intricate too since it jumps between three to four different scenerios all happening at once, but it is not overwhelming. They blend together very well though to create a story t...more

For this author's first book I have to say I'm amazed. I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series! The multiple storylines are written very well. The way they fit together is an impressive puzzle. Yes, it's a heavy book with a lot of characters, but if you've got time to read and love fantasy series, I highly recommended The Rafters. The descriptions in the book really make you feel like you're there in the story with the characters. This Story has a lot of potential, and i...more

I really liked this book. It is the first fantasy book that I've read. I was pleasantly surprised at the complexity of the characters and story. The authors attention to detail richly enhances the reading experience and allows you to visualize the different worlds of light and dark in which the colorful characters move. The pace of the book draws you in and makes you want to keep reading until the end. I can't wait to see what happens to the characters in the following books. I'll definately rea...more

Oh where to begin? This was a DNF - and I tried, I really tried to get into this book.

Why DNF? This is a self-published book, and the author really needed an editor. It wasn't just her delight in throwing in as many adjectives and as much description as she possibly could (to the detriment of actual plot), it was also her misuse of words. I strongly suspect that she went to an SAT Verbal prep book or a thesaurus and chose words that just missed the meaning she actually wanted to convey, and that...more

I didn't write my own summary this time. That's because I couldn't figure out the main plotline while reading the book. There were a lot of characters who connect at different times, but there didn't seem to be any overriding plot. Also, I didn't even realize that Rhyus is the main character until I reread the summary.

This is a very heavy book, and not just because it is over 500 pages. It has a very somber, weighty feel to the writing. I found it difficult to stay involved, and I couldn't jump...more

Enter a fantasy realm that is not quite set in the future or the past. A young Calling named Rhyus must figure out his destiny, yet his efforts take him further away from his Messenger, his guardian who is to lead him in the right direction. An unusual story -- not my favorite fantasy book, but interesting and has potential. I wonder what the rest of the series will have to offer? This book will keep you reading and wanting more! The way it's written is much like that of Dan Brown's novels, an exciting and mysterious adventure with very descriptive, short chapters from different character's points of view, which makes for a quick, easy, and exciting read! The author did a great job of creating an overall depiction of each character that I felt I was right alongside each one throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!!

I've read the original ARC version, and just got done reading the new, rereleased national version. I was impressed by how in depth and creative this author is for it being their first book. The other reviews do not do it justice, most likely because it was the ARC they read. The final version has many great improvements.

Give this book a chance, I honestly cannot wait for the rest of this anticipated, seven book series.

The author of this series upholds the high standard expected by fantasy readers everywhere. Characters with unusual abilities are brought to life in this in depth novel, leaving you wanting to know where the next book will take them. Each chapter brings with it new revelations which lead up to an excitingly fast paced yet profound ending. For the mature book lover up for a challenging read!

AC Montgomery has a gift for storytelling. In The Rafters, she takes the reader into a world she creates with such detail the reader can visualize the surroundings and feel a part of the homes, cities and buildings. The characters keep you wondering - are they the good guys or the bad guys. There are plots and subplots and a young Calling who is adrift without knowledge only his Messenger can provide. All of the characters, details and twists made it hard for me to get into at first, but after s...more
