Decided to give Julie Garwood a go since she'd been recommended to me, but apparently I picked the wrong book or something, because Slow Burn mostly just came across to me as Slow Bore. The blurb was promising, telling me all about how Kate MacKenna was being hounded by things blowing up everywhere she goes, and how said explosions were going to throw her across the path of two different men. And certainly we started off well, with things going splody around Kate as promised.

I wanted to like this one. I did. I liked Dylan, I thought he was an interesting Buchanan brother (Didn't dethrone my favorite, Theo, for those keeping score) and yes, I fell for that lazy sort of devil-may-care attitude he had, and that he had a long-standing flirtatious back and forth with the female lead, Kate MacKenna, who happens to be his sister Jordan's best friend. Combining those elements of getting to see Jordan, of another Buchanan brother, and a Southern setting, I was hoping for ano...more
Have I mentioned how much I enjoy Julie Garwood? Another great one in this book. What's interesting to me is that these books are kind of about the Buchanan's, since they are the consistent family, but the story is usually focused on the love interest of whichever Buchanan it is. Like this one is focused on Kate McKenna and her sisters, but it involves the Buchanan family, as it has in other stories that are completely unrelated to the McKenna's. Garwood has likable Heroines, and awesome Her...more
So I finally read one of her romantic suspenses usually a fan of her historical romances. I haven't found a romance writer that does great suspense but I think because it is difficult combo. The best to date was McNaught's Perfect but this one comes in second. It wasn't predictable and I liked the main characters, their history and through this incident how they were thrown together. Katie was an interesting character- unknowningly being a heiress to millions and suddenly having all these "...more
This book follows Kate MacKenna and Dylan Buchanan. Kate is having an attack of the wrong place, wrong times, and while she originally thinks it is just coincidence that she was almost blown up twice, it soon becomes clear that somthing else is going on. Dylan Buchanan, Boston PD officer and Kate's best friend's brother, comes to her aide. He sticks with her as she finds out she is about to lose her company due to a loan her mother took out when she was dying and when she is notified that she...more
I love LOVE LOVE Julie Garwoods books. You get such a 90's bad ass rug'd sexy cop feel from the males. And each charachers is so different and the same and different.
I'm a sucker for happy ending stories. These books might be found is clichies to people because they all have the same story setting out:
girl and boy meet
they fall for each other
struggle to see it and accept it
Flirting the house down and other things

I did have style issues, and it's not as if the prose is anything to savor, but compared to so many wretched torturous styles I've suffered on the romance recommendation list I've been working through this was readable--with a narrative that flowed well and characters I cared enough about to want to keep going to the very end. I even found one part that choked me up a little. I liked Kate--an entrepreneur with one sister in medical school and another entering college still in mourning for her mo...more
An unpretentious beauty who radiates kindness, Kate MacKenna doesn’t have a bad bone in her body–or an enemy in the world. So why are bombs igniting everywhere she goes? The first explosion brings her face-to-face with a handsome Charleston police detective. The second sends her into the arms of her best friend’s brother–a Boston cop who’s a little too reckless and way too charming for comfort. But Dylan Buchanan won’t let emotion prevent him from doing his job: Someone is trying to kill Kate, a...more
Another wonderful Romance/Suspense. Date and Dylan are great characters that will have you wanting to move south. Again the Buchanan men! You will not want to put this down.

Julie Garwood has written her most electrifying work of romantic suspense yet--an unforgettable novel of heart-pounding action and intense emotion. Slow Burn tells the gripping story of a woman who returns to her tiny hometown, and finds herself implicated in a decades-old brutal murder. After so many years away, it is nearly impossible for her to tell whom she can trust . . . and whom she should fear. Garwood skillfully blends white-knuckle suspense with matters of the heart and humor. Slow Bur...more
I have this four stars not because it is a great book but because I just thouroughly enjoyed it. It was a fast read, unlike the previous books in the Bucannan series it didn't take me long to get into it. Good story line. I was disappointed that the ending was somewhat like the previous book in the series, Murder List. I think Julie Garwood could have done things a little differently...hard to explain without giving out spoilers. I love the chemistry between Dylan and Kate and the fact that...more
I like this series and think Julie Garwood has created compelling male leads in the Buchanan family. While this is an interesting story, Kate is a fairly bland character even though her background would suggest otherwise. Dylan is pretty well fleshed out and thank goodness we see a lot of him in the story. It's a good read but not on the level of Heartbreaker and Mercy. I was able to figure out the culprit in the mystery but there is a surprising twist to compensate for that. It was worth my ti...more

This is book 5 in the Buchanan Series, and I couldn't put it down. I loved the interaction that Kate had with Jordan; I loved the familiarity between Kate and Dylan from the very beginning. I've said it before in other reviews but I believe it so much that I am going to say it again. Mrs. Garwood never stops surprising you think she has a formula and then she ups and changes it. The Romance aspect was so much different from all the others. I have to say I think that even thought I have loved al...more

This was the last book in Buchanan-McKenna-Whatever series in my TBR list. I'm just addicted to Julie Garwood's books - both contemporary and historical and I was longing to read this one - need to say that I read this series totally out of order.
Well, maybe my expectations were too high. Truth is, I like this book, but is not the best one in the series for me. My fav so far is Killjoy and oh, how I miss John Paul. The plot of Slow Burn is kinda weird.

Decent read by Julie Garwood. A mystery that was not so predicatable and held my interest. Love the Buchanan family as I have read one of the other related stories in this series. I liked Kate McKenna, but didn't so much for her sisters as they seemed a little flighty. Dillon Buchanan was a lot of fun, but not as intense as some of the other male love interests in other books. Overall, a pretty light read and met my expectations.

Book 5 Kate gets babysat by Dylan after inheriting $80m and two bomb explosions. Best friend's brother more distracting than killer.

"It wouldn't bother me at all. I'm immune now, Dylan."
Ah, man, was he going to have some fun with her. "Good to know," he drawled.
Desperate to change the subject, she picked up her makeup bag and her pajamas
I liked this book so far the best out of all of them. It seemed more real and the long-time friendship that turned into more was something most of us want or have. I loved Isabel's southern charm, she was hilarious. Maybe she'll hook up with one of the younger Buchanan brother's, but I'm sure that would be pushing it and not very creative. Overall I was surprised at who the accomplice was, but I kinda figured put who it was about the same time Dylan did.
The first Julie Garwood I read was "Whitney, My Love" and it was marvelous! These new ones she writes are really just beach-reading junk. They're enjoyable, and quick reads, but can't touch her historical romances. The modern ones are all the same, about the same family where everyone is a police officer and they get married, one book after the next. Still, I read them when I can't find anything else because they're reliable.
Here's another one that I'd forgotten I'd read previously. Thank goodness for goodreads... perhaps this won't happen as often in the future. :o)
In any event, I enjoyed it for the 2nd time around. I liked that there seemed to be more chemistry in this one and though I don't LIVE for the sex scenes, it was nice that they seemed to have more of an expressed physical connection. After reading these in a row, I will say that the plots are all starting to seem a bit too similar... but, if yo...more

A very, very simplistic mystery involving a woman who has escaped death by bombing two times, but doesn't realize they were intended to cause her harm. A dashing policeman, whom she has loved forever, comes to her rescue before the third bomb can do her in. It was just a bunch of drivel with a high school level plot. Guess what? I didn't care for it!
I read this on my spring break. I am a teacher and needed some light, mild reading to take my mind off of my 120 high school students. This book served just that purpose. I felt that some of the author's writing was poor (in spots) but what do I know? Julie Garwood is the one with the career. Anyhow, the novel is about a beautiful young woman, struggling financially who comes across a great windfall and through out the book she escapes several assasination attempts and falls in love with a ...more
i've read and liked a few of julie garwood's books before but this one really disappointed me. the dialogue was inadequate and just all over the place.. the romance was downright ridiculous and kate is one of the most idiotic protagonists i've ever read about.

I admit that I'm kind of burned out of romantic suspense books, but this was actually good. I liked the humor that was added, and while the plot was pretty simple, it was definitely interesting, and there was a surprising twist at the end.
Good listening. (Another book on tape to make the work drive easier) I plan to complete this series regardless of the order in which I read them. :) Easy storytelling, interesting storyline, not overly sexual though definitely not for small ears.
Slow Burn is like those Sunday roasts your mother used to cook. It falls more into the category of satisfying than surprising or challenging. Personally I think there is a lot to be said for satisfying and I enjoyed this book a lot.
Second time around with this series. Don't know why I picked it up again but I'm glad I did. Sometimes it's good to sit down with some familiar characters. Julie Garwood is a wonderful writer and I've been reading her for years.
