Back in 1957, Theodor Geisel responded to an article in Life magazine that lamented the use of boring reading primers in schools. Using the pseudonym of "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name) and only two hundred twenty-three words, Geisel created a replacement for those dull primers: "The Cat in the Hat." The instant success of the book prompted Geisel and his wife...more

Haha, one of my sons claimed he COULD read with is eyes shut (because he read the same book every day for a months) so I got this book and he had to read with his eyes OPEN. Oh, it's so fun being a parent.

Anyways, this is a good book for beginning readers because like almost all Seuss books he focuses on the most common words we use. The pictures are fun and the story is silly so little ones like to listen to it as well.

There are so many different ways to read. Can you read with your eyes shut? You might be surprised to find that you can and do.

I don't remember this book from my childhood, so reading it now was something of an experience. At first I thought, Reading with your eyes shut? Ridiculous! Impossible! Of course, Dr. Seuss was someone who could reveal what seemed random and wrong as precise and probable.

I am only familiar with the Cat in the Hat from his self-titled book, so another with him was a welco...more

I read this book because I wanted to read a Dr. Seuss book. It had been years and I wanted to remember why I liked this author so much. I remembered after reading a few of his clever lines but I still gave a low rating on this book. I did this because even though it was entertaining, there are so many more better Dr. Seuss books that I would recommend before this one. The Grinch and The Cat In the Hat are two examples. Still this was a good book and it is good because it motivates kids to read....more

Dr. Seuss's "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" is a classic Dr. Seuss book. He uses clever rhyme scheme to create a story that will be appealing to both adults and children of all ages. This book in particular uses anaphora by beginning the majority of the sentences with "I can read". As children read this, they begin to gain more confidence with their reading because they can read, and they are repeatedly saying, "I can read!" One my assume that this book is simply about reading with your eyes clo...more

I can read with my eyes shut was very enjoyable just like all the rest of Dr. Suess’ collection. This particular book translated the message that keeping your eyes open in life can get you so very far. It also described that with your eyes open you can do so much in life such as read, learn, explore, etc. Like Dr. Suess said in the book, “You will learn the most wonderful stuff! if you keep your eyes open.” Also, the more you read the more knowledge you have and in turn this opens up more oppor...more

It never ceases to amaze me how Dr. Seuss incorporates his literary wit and charm into a kid-friendly inspiring picture book. This is the first time I have read "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut," and it is no doubt something I would love to read to my future students. I love how The Cat in the Hat relates to the kids at the beginning, claiming an "I can do anything attitude," and then he slowly transitions into the other end of the spectrum. For kids who may think that they don't need to read becau...more

Words cannot begin to express how much I love Dr. Seuss. This book is a great book for encouraging students to read. This book helps motivate students to possess a genuine love for reading. Dr. Seuss uses rhymes, tongue twisters, and very elaborate illustrations. This book is very engaging for children of all ages. The book also highlights the color words in the particular color they are. I think this is a good book to teach children about rhyming words and rhythm. As a teacher, I could also use...more

I can read with my eyes shut is a very colorful book. I remember reading this book when I was younger. This book is a very good book to help a student who does not want to read. It is a fun and interactive way to get the student interested in book. It doesn’t have to be a long book just one to get the student started. This book was colorful and fun and happy book. It talks about all he can do with his eyes shut but then explains why he is better with his eyes open. This book was one of the first...more

I Can Read With My Eyes Shut is yet another Dr. Suess classic, but I feel that this one goes above and beyond the fantasy world of Dr. Suess and actually delivers some very solid context. The book basically explains to the reader how reading itself is an amazingly important thing and that through reading you can accomplish all types of things throughout your life, but without reading you will not be able to become what you want. Some very deep things to think about, but good to instill them in c...more

I love reading, as well as looking at, Dr. Seuss books. They're so much fun to hear, and I know that children enjoy the rhymes and silly names of animals. This book is all about reading, and how it requires you to pay attention and NOT close your eyes because you'll miss important things! The illustrations in this book were so fantastical and allows children to put themselves in these locations vicariously. While reading this book to kids, it is very easy for them to get immersed because in the...more

Dr. Seuss"I Can Read with My Eyes Shut" is book that rhymes and can grab the readers attention. In the book he mentions that he can read with his eyes shut but if you keep reading with your eyes shut you will miss so much more than if you with your eyes were open. I believe that in the book he relays a message that books open your eyes to a new world rather than being left in the dark. Books can change your life and you will learn so much more by reading. This book is a treasure and is a book th...more

Another wonderful book from the good doctor that I got to share with my nephew for the first time. It's so awesome that he is so of Dr.Seuss and I get a kick out of hearing him read the stories out loud because there is nothing more enchanting than a child's voice. This was cute, a little less preachy than Horton and a bit more silly but it had a great passage that I absolutely fell-in-love with because it is so true and describes exactly how I feel about books and reading:

"There are so many thi...more

This is a fabulous and humorous book. There are many silly parts in the story and it's interesting and Dr. Seuss intertwines colors with objects and this is teaching children color association that can be used as a simple math lesson for young children in sorting colors with objects... This story has an educational lesson that teaches kids they have to open their eyes to learn or you'll miss the important things. In addition, the illustrations are great and fun! The rhyming and twisty wording ma...more

This is an awesome piece of children's literature in my opinion. Reading this again after not seeing it for such a long time really amused me. I'm not going to lie; it was quite entertaining for my boyfriend and I! How the words 'red', 'blue' and 'pickle green' are in the actual colors, how on a page the words actually deviate from the typical left-to-right paragraph formatting and instead swirl around, making you twist and turn the book to continue reading! To a child it makes reading seem so m...more

Once again Dr. Seuss works his rhyming magic as he takes young readers on the wonderful roller coaster that is reading. In this easy to read beginner's book, Cat in the Hat demonstrates how exciting reading can be. In different colors, upside down, or the bees, knees, and trees one can learn, this journey inspires youngsters to keep their eyes wide open and explore the benefits of reading.

"You'll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut" so even if, like Cat in the Hat, you can ready wit...more

I love all Dr. Seuss books. It makes reading come alive. Also, it gives examples about all the amazing things you can read about. It also lets them see that they must read to become successful in life. One of the points that it made that I didn't enjoy, was that it pushed that you must be a fast reader. I think that slow readers are almost better than fast ones because they really get to let the words sink in, instead of being like the fast readers, who don't even read all the words in a book. I love all Dr. Seuss books, and this one has to be one of my favorites because it introduces readers to reading in a different light. The book aims to motivate children to read, read, read, and it displays reading as something fun, which it absolutely most positively is! This is a great book to use for encouragement, and I would use this cute story to introduce a love for reading early on in the school year. As always, Dr. Seuss throws in colorful words and rhyming that can always lead to a grea...more

My opinion may be a little bias, because I have always been a fan of Dr. Seuss since the time I was little. Dr. Seuss just has a way of sending a message across to readers in a fun and inviting way. I Can Read with My Eyes Shut is a great children's book not only for children, but for adults as well. I enjoyed this book because it was clever and it had great illustrations. It also adds humor as you read that is funny for both adults and is still understood by children, which is a great plus when...more

I can read with my eyes shut is a good book. I love Dr. Suess and always have. This is not one of my favorite books by him but still a good book. I think the book has an important message of reading is great. He tells the young cat about all the wonderful things he can learn about through reading. A lot of things he says are silly things that I think will catch children’s interest because they too will want to learn how to do those silly things. This was a pretty easy read and I think is great f...more

Reading is an important skill that everyone is required to master. We tell students all the time that they must learn to read because it is important, but why is it important? This is a question that many of our students will ask us if we constantly tell them reading is important, but never explain why and how. It would be nice to ask the students why they believe reading is important. This book does a good job at explaining the importance of reading. This story can be extended into a lesson on...more

A classic Dr. Seuss tale. The familiar Cat in the Hat shows Young Cat that reading can be fun, but you can't read with your eyes shut. This book shows kids how much they can miss if they don't read. A book can take you to so many places and you can learn so many things just from reading! This is a great book to get younger students wanting to read and reading by themselves! It also incorporates rhyming, as all Dr. Seuss books do, which makes it an easier beginning reader book, as well as a teach...more

I think this book is a great choice to be reading with readers who are just getting used to putting words into sentences based on the pictures and visuals they are given. Throughout the book, Dr. Seuss uses different colored fonts to represent a color he is saying and points to objects with an umbrella throughout to show the reader what he is referring to. He also is continuously emphasizing the fact that reading becomes easier with practice which I think is something that all beginning readers...more

Dr. Seuss once again showes us why he is a favorite amongst young readers. His choice of words, and rhyme, has its own way of captivating children. In this fascinating story,The Cat In The Hat, teaches us that the best way to read is with your eyes open. Even though it is possible to read in other ways, by reading with open eyes, you will not miss out on all the amazing things reading has to offer you. So keep your eyes wide, wide open because if you close them, there is no telling what you might...more

This is a great little book that captures the wittiness of Dr. Seuss. It captures the rhyme scheme and vivid pictures that are signature to Dr. Seuss books, but also ties in a great message for readers about reading. It gives the readers a sense of the world of reading, and what can be discovered in it. It finishes with an urge for readers to open their eyes and become a part of this wondrous world. I feel that it is a great story for anyone to read, but especially great in motivating children t...more

I really love I can Read With My Eyes Shut and it definitely is a great book for young children. It focuses on helping to teach kids about all the different things there are that you can read about. It is fun for kids to read and listen to because of the friendly vocabulary and the rhyming. I like how the book relates reading to everyday life, such as street signs and places in the world. This a great educstional book to teach children about reading and what you can do with reading.

I Can Read with My Eyes Shut is a witty, colorful picture book all about reading. The Cat in the Hat goes through the book describing different ways you can read and different things you can read about. He tries to read with his eyes shut but then explains how it is difficult and if you keep your eyes open it is much better and you can do so much more! I think this book is good for children because of its rhyming and how it makes reading sound fun and something that children would want to do.

This classic Dr. Seuss book encourages children to read by using the classic rhymes. In this story, an older cat shows a younger cat the importance of reading. He shows him that by reading he can learn new things and travel new places. He will gain so many skills through reading, and the words and illustrations bring this reality to life for children as well. The creativity of Dr. Seuss shows again with the wholesome message that reading takes us on new adventures every time.

In this book, the Cat in the Hat talks about how he can read many different things and how he can do so with his eyes shut. By the end he decides reading with at least one eye open is a good idea. Dr. Suess uses rhyming which is a really fun and easy way to read. This book teaches its readers how important reading really is and that if you do it with your eyes open you can learn so much more! This book is really fun with great illustrations. I would recommend it to any young reader.

I love Dr. Seuss books! The illustration and silly sentences can capture a child's attention. Plus its easy to read. Right away I noticed that the book introduced colors, directions (such as upside-down, right and left), emotions, etcetera. I feel it's an easy read for a beginner, plus it's goofy. I'm sure a child will react to "I can read in pickle color", and "knees on trees." It informs children that there's a book out there about pretty much anything you can think of.
Paige
I think this book is great. The way the pictures illustrate exactly what is being read and the fact that the colors are actually written in the color being read makes it so easy for the children to understand what each word means. I love Dr. Seuss books because they are always rhyming which makes them more fun to read too. This book seems like it would get kids excited to want to read because it says so many different things they can learn about when reading other books.
