3.5 stars. A campy, nutty, off-the-wall blood-lite vampire romance not recommended for the serious PNR lovers or those with delicate sensibilities.

I almost DNFd this one a half dozen times, but something about Ephraim and the weirdness of the story kept me reading. It was full of absurd plotting, a motley crew of nutty characters, all mixed with some off-the-wall world building. WTFery on near...more

Loved every page of this book and didn't want it to end. I am so happy I decided to read a paranormal romance. It has gotten me back on the horse again. R.L. Mattewson is an excellent author and I would recommend this book as well as her others to everyone.

This book actually caught me by surprise. The fact that it was a free download on Barnes & Noble didn't hurt either. However, since I have to base all my reviews on honesty, the cost of a book won't sway me either way.

This story begins in early 1800's London. "Ephraim," the story's hero, who also happens to be a 10 year old boy, is transforming into a vampire. After a month in a coma, Ephraim now looks like a fully grown man of 25. His family is stunned into disbelief only adding to the chaos and confusion. However, Ephraim's father knew his wife had relations outside the marriage, resulting in her pregnancy, which subsequently kills her upon childbirth. Unfortunately, once Ephraim's transformation is complete, he spends the next 20 years in a dungeon due to his family's need for secrecy and thinking he is an evil, blood-sucking monster.

Fast forward to present day as the author swithces gears and introduces the reader to our heroine, "Madison." She's the member of a terribly dysfunctional family to put it mildly. Her two siblings, Jill and Joshua are much younger and her strong sense of responsibility only enhanced her need to independently raise them. (Mostly due to their mother's selfish "me first" lifestyle, her lust for any man with a pulse and money; along with her sub-zero heart.) One disater after another finds Madison and her family, including her good-for-nothing mother, moving into their grandmother's boarding house. There, our heroine meets one of the boarders, "Ephraim."

The writing style of Mathewson's was impressive, including her incredibly unique storyline. She would also tell parts of this story through the eyes of Ephraim and then swtich to the same scene through the point of view of Madison...all the while keeping it in 3rd person. I was intrigued by that alone! The book had so much humor as well which only added to my enjoyment...not to mention some very steamy scenes! I must admit, however, the story seemed a little choppy in the middle, but as I kept going, I was thoroughly entertained by several action-packed scenes and surprises towards the end! This was a fun, sexy and sometimes macabre read and I've come to enjoy everything I've read by this very talented author.

TALL,DARK AND LONELY was not only surprising but a very different from Mathewson's usual story-read. i found the characters to be light and humorous adding up the story in there own unique way while fitting into the plot easily.

initially when i started this i found the lead character,Ephraim,(pyte) kinna resembling Stephanie Meyer's edward cullen,in her debt novel Twilight.

now im not saying Ephraim and Edward are alike.no.

i mean other than the fact that they both share there starting letter,'e'...more

I loved it. A light paranormal with a heavy dose of smexings, what not to love right? Ephraim just about melted me to puddles. He was such a sweet, sweet Pyte. Pytes are like vampires, they drink blood but they can walk in the daylight unlike the vampires. So, I would say that every vampire wanna be just like Ephraim.

Hmmm, not really what I was expecting.

I usually love anything PNR, but for me, this didn’t have the feel of a great PNR. The paranormal element wasn’t really explained, and was still unwinding in the final pages of the book. I was hooked on this book from the first sentence. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning finishing this book. I couldn’t get enough of Ephraim! Madison is a wonderful counterpart to Ephraim. She tests his resolve and patience. They are a dynamic pair and keep each other their toes.

While Ephraim is a vampire, he’s a special vampire. He’s a Pyte. He also has standards he lives by and refuses to become a monster. Being a Pyte means he’s a daywalker! In addition to being a daywalker, he was born, not made into a vampire.

Madison was forced to grow up early as her mother isn’t really a mother. Madison’s mother, Candy, is more concerned with partying hooking up rather than being a mother, so Madison stepped up.

When Madison and Ephraim meet, sparks fly and so do the tempers. I found myself laughing, crying, and cringing throughout the story. I laughed at the arguments Ephraim and Madison got into, cried when they were being too difficult to listen to each other, and cringing when Ephraim went all me, vampire on Madison.

I loved this story and found R.L. Matthewson’s take on vampires to be refreshing. R.L. had many of the traditional view on vampires as well as some new insights. R.L. also managed to introduce the beginning of vampires and sentinels without belaboring the point and boring me. It flowed nicely into the story and was integral to the storyline. R.L. also did an amazing job of showing how vampires are like what we’ve traditionally thought as well as some new aspects.

While I loved this book very much, I would have liked to have seen more action and suspense in the story. There was definitely some suspense in the story, but I would have liked to have seen that ramped up a bit.

I found the way the romance played out between Madison and Ephraim very realistic. They were definitely attracted to each other but both had issues to work through. The resolution to their problems was not a walk in the park, they had to work for it and the culmination of that hard work was oh so worth the wait!

This was a fantastic start to a new series and I’ll definitely be reading more! At a find of 99 cents for the book, R.L. Matthewson is quite the find! This book is definitely worth more than that!

The novel is about a young woman, Madison who has raised her two younger siblings her entire life as her low-life mother comes in and out of their life when some man dumps her. Madison put her life on hold and raised the kids on her own, even getting herself though college and becoming a teacher.

As their "mother" comes back in their lives they decide to move to New England to live with their Grandma who will now have custody of the two younger kids and let her oldest Granddaughter live in her boarding house for free. That is where Madison meets her new roommate, Ephraim. A very mysterious, handsome local detective who lives in the boarding house as well. The two meet and develop an attraction that leads to so much!

Ephraim has a secret, he is a vampire who has special powers that other vampires want. Soon Madison and her family is dragged into the drama while Ephraim and Madison try to keep their relationship last for eternity.

REVIEW: Okay, so this book has A LOT of spelling errors, it is cheesy as heck but you know what. I LIKED it a lot... I gave it 4 stars (really 3.5) but rounded up because it kept my interest and made me blush at the love scenes. Wowzers, very steamy! Madison is a wonderful character, she puts herself last and her family first. She would do anything for them which leads to her needs getting pushed back. Ephraim changed everything for her and it was beautiful to see their relationship develop over the course of the book.

My favorite character though is Chris. What a sweet guy! I love how his character blossomed over the book. He went from being a misunderstood student to a hero with secrets of his own. He made me laugh with his comments and made me smile though out the book.

Tall, Dark, & Lonely was a fun read and well worth the 99 cent price tag!(less)

I was attempting to be a bit more budget conscious in April, particularly with regards to my Nook addiction. These books were only 99 cents! I bought the whole series, plus the Neighbor from Hell books, for less than the cost of a new book from a more popular author. I was pleasantly surprised with the world Matthewson has built here. I love Madison-Ephraim. I absolutely enjoy this book. Although this started harsh, brutal, cruel but I'm happy it turns out as entertaining, sizzling hot, heart-melting sweet. I love how their family bond together even if they are not related by blood. I like Chris, Joshua and the drama queen Jill. I also like the Grandma. I love the story telling, I love the uniqueness of the plot, kinda new from the vampire craze, but above all I just like how the author mold every character to have endearing...more

Where do I begin? I really enjoyed the first part of the novel. She's hard working, chaste, and has a hard time trusting.

The whole family ends up moving in with the grandmother, who runs a boarding house. The young heroine, Madison, is determined not to be anything like her mother. She's hard working, chaste, and has a hard time trusting.

Things quickly go off the rails as far as plot and character. Madison degenerates from a strong woman to a an indecisive, irrational mess. I understand that she's supposed to have commitment issues - but this is pushing believability.

Speaking of believability - who does our strong, level-headed heroine fall in love with? Why, a controlling, dismissive, irrational vampire-like creature that lives next door, of course! Who wouldn't love a man that single-handedly decides what's best for all involved? Throw in a few angsty paragraphs about how he now owns Madison, and we're just chugging right along.

So our virgin heroine decides she's going to get frisky with Control Freak next door. One problem - he'll lose his shit when they have sex because that will tear her hymen, cause her to bleed, and he'll have to suck her blood. The only logical thing to do at this point is get a sex toy, crouch in the bathtub, and break her own hymen. Ephraim surprises her in the middle of all this, she slips and falls, and causes damage to herself. They discover later she has a super-hymen that is too thick to break and requires a doctor.

Let's just pause here a moment. There is so much wrong with this little scene. First, a woman's hymen is on the outside. She doesn't need to use a sex toy and go digging for gold to find it. Second, the author has to make sure you understand that Madison is different from her floozy of a mother in every way, and what says "not a slut" better than a super-thick hymen?

The crazy-train keeps rolling, they screw like bunnies at every chance, pick up a few more stray children, and add a few more supernatural beings. We've had two plot shifts so far - we started out concentrated on Madison and her relationship with the family, and now we've tossed the family to the periphery so Madison and Ephraim can get busy.

The plot changes again. Out of nowhere comes the sudden realization that Madison is being blackmailed by the father of her brother and she's broke and can't pay her bills. At this point, we've spent some substantial time in the head of Madison. We even go with her into the shower. But we never find out or get even a hint that she's sending her entire salary to pay blackmail until we find out that the blackmailer is being videotaped having sex with a pre-op transsexual in Ephraim's bedroom?

Things get even better when we find out Grandma, like every other woman in her family, can't control her finances and needs to be bailed out. So super-controlling Ephraim buys the house and lets them all continue to live there. All why giving off super-creepy, Now I Really Own You vibes.

And then it just gets worse... Our heroine, that has a really hard time trusting anyone, gets knocked up. So what does our loving vampire knock-off do? He forces her into becoming a vampire, because he knows best and just wants to protect her. At this point, I really expected him to start hitting her and saying it was for her own good. Totally in line with the rest of the story at this point.

This book is so all over the place, I can't even remember what plot twist we're on before the other vampires show up and start trying to kill everyone.

Very enjoyable, very different PNR! I had one or two issues with the storyline, but other than that this is well-written and quite unique. Ephraim...wow, my goodness, did I love him or what?! Another thoroughly enjoyable read by R.L. Mathewson! Ephraim was hot, grumpy, brooding, dangerous - everything you'd want in a gorgeous vampire who also is a cop. Yikes! Okay this was my first vampire book. I know I know but I've stayed away because of twilight. No I didn't read the books but the movies kinda ruined vampire anything for me. But woah am I so dang glad I read this book.

Im reading the first couple of chapters of this book and I was cracking out laughing and I was like yay! I found a five star book! the beginning was funny and I liked both hero and heroine , I also liked when they first met that it wasnt an instant attraction to him that he didn't instantly declare his love for her, although the second he saw her looking hot he was suddenly into her and her virgin blood.

so when they finally get together I found her virginity/hymen plot kind of gross, you see , she wanted him to be 'the one' but he couldn't brake her hymen due to the blood and him going all bloodthirsty and kill her, shes disapointed so she trys to brake it herself using a battery operated device while shes in the bathtub, again this hole bit is just ew, while she's just about to the guy comes through the door which surprises her and she slips and falls on it causing her a tonne of pain. couple days later the pain is still there so they go to the hospital where she has to explain to the doc what happened. The doc explained that she had a thick hymen and even after all that she didnt even manage to brake it. so the doc offers to do the procedure there.

This hole plot totally ruined the book for me, I was cringing the entire time.

Anyways.. after all this, yep I still continued, all of a sudden she was so into him and wanting him that it turned me off, the thing I hate worst in a book is a klingy heroine. At this point I was done.

I love R.L. Mathewson books, shes the author I go to for something funny, I loved her neighbour series and i'll still continune to read her books. I just knew I should've stayed away from vampires.

I came across R.L. Mathewson’s books a few months ago and I could not put them down! Not one! I started with the Neighbor from Hell series and quickly began the Pyte/Sentinel after. Tall, Dark & Lonely is the first book in this series and if you are a fan of a “forever kind” of love this book is for you!

Ephraim is a two-hundred and six year old Pyte (born from a vampire father and human mother) that falls head over heels for Madison. He’s caring, loyal and generous and only has eyes for his tenant’s human granddaughter. At first sight (and smell) he is attracted to her and her blood.

Madison is twenty-three year old woman who has had a rough life, and that’s putting it mildly. Her deadbeat mother has never cared for her or her two younger kids and because of this Madison has had to grow up faster than most to look after her siblings, Jill (fifteen) and Joshua (ten). Madison has spent her whole life putting her family first to provide for them and now she has a chance to be at ease when she moves the family in with her grandmother. What she wasn’t expecting was to fall in love, let alone with a pyte and the danger that it may bring.

This story is one of my favorites. Madison has a lot to learn and Ephraim is the perfect guy to teach her. Even though Madison has grown up extremely fast, she’s still very sheltered when it comes to boys and dating. Ephraim is the first man that makes her feel special and when she tries to reach out he flees because he knows once he starts a romance or more with her, he won’t stop!

Another favorite part of this book is that I get to continue to read the story in Without Regret (book 2) & Tall, Dark & Heartless (book 3) and hopefully 4 this year! Once you read this story you won’t get enough of the characters and their personalities. Each character will remind you of someone you know and you’ll grow to adore each one! Don’t miss this series! So far I love all of R.L. Mathewson's books I have read and this one is no different. I absolutely loved it. It was interesting from the very beginning. Towards the middle Madison and Ephraim's relationship felt rushed, everything was happening so fast that I would have enjoyed the author adding another 100 pages or so and letting you take the time to fall in love with their relationship. Not for the faint hearted. And after i read this, i finally understood what other reviewers were saying. Some of the things written were so crude, either you cant stomach else you are repulsed by it. I wont mention the details cause remembering it... still makes me shudder in an awful way. I also hated Madison's mother, what she did to Jill... let's not think of that too, unpleasant feelings.

Honestly, I was so impressed with RL Mathewson's hideous neighbours books that I was happy to find that this had been a free kindle download and rushed off to read it. Sadly it's like it was written by another author or at least has been hidden down the back of the lounge for years and the author's talent considerably improved since.

Whenever I see a guy riding an ostrich for a race, I lean in to watch, love the sprint out of the gate and the balancing act until the rider gets seated. TOTAL PACKAGE...

I finished reading "The Neighbor from Hell" series and started to look R.L. up to see what else there was of hers to read... turns out there's a ton.... and SUPER CHEAP... Either her books are free or .99... I seriously don't know how she makes any money doing that, but, well... it works for me...

I was on a roll reading 3 books by R.L. Mathewson in the three days prior to picking up this book . This book started out very interesting . I was hooked from the beginning. It dated back to the 1890's when a boy who was 16 but looked 10 slipped into a coma and a month later woke up in a 25 year old man's body. The granddaughter who had the adjoining room and a shared bathroom with Ephraim was 24 year Madison who worked as a high school teacher. Now this was all very interesting to me until the book totally hopped a train to crazy town and really grossed me out. There was way too much talk about virgins, virginal blood, hymens. Let me just say the worst and most unbelievable thing that happened involved a hymen, and a girl in the shower with a very bad vibrator. I was like "really? , You had to go there R.L.? I have to say this book earned three stars because it could have been great if the author had just stuck to the vampire love story and left out the ridiculous deflowering of the virgin. To have this book tell it it's extremely hard. I loved the plot in the book if you drop the above mention stupidity. It was very Twilight meets Fifty Shades of Gray. I am not so excited about the second book in the series because I feel that the author ran out of things to write so they just put crazy on paper and called it a book. That's not to say that I won't read it but if you are planning on trying a book from R.L. Mathewson I would definitely recommend her Neighbor From Hell series or Sudden Response. I've read all four of those books and they are phenomenal as far as romance novels go. I love a good Vampire book but I think this one could have been better. Less is more R.L.! Please remember that next time you decide to put a virgin and a vampire in a book! I understand that Madison's blood called to Ephraim and all but take a note from Stephanie Meyer because she definitely did it better and I never gagged reading Twilight. (less)

Let me start off by saying that before I read this book I thought it would be one that I would flounce. Oh how wrong I was...

I absolutely LOVED this book... I originally got this book from amazon because it was free and I generally like vampire romance so I thought I'd try it. However, I wound up waiting to read it for a while and read another of R.L. Mathewson's books - Playing for Keeps - first. I loved the author's writing style - light humor with deep characters. At some point I got a little direction in my life and tried my hand at emergency medicine, since I am, or at least was, deathly afraid of needles I opted for the fun job in EMS, an EMT. It was a fun job, a bit stressful, but I learned a great deal and had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. I learned a great deal from my patients and have never forgotten the wisdom they imparted on me. After a short stint as a Residential Home worker I decided to try the stay-at-home mom job and found out something very important.

I can't just sit around with nothing to do while I try to be deathly silent so that I don't wake up one of my children and send them into a blood curdling screaming fit. So, to fill the time I started to read again. When I was in school I was a bookworm, but got away from it as I grew older. I was drawn back into my love of reading by Julia Quinn's What Happens In London. It was a wonderful, witty book and I fell instantly in love with romance novels.

Some of the romance novels that I read were great and I couldn't get enough, I started to play with the idea of writing a book. Several months later I finally gave in and tried. For four months straight I worked day and night until finally I finished my first book. Then of course I re-read what I wrote, cringed and deleted the entire book and started over again. I started working on other projects and soon had two finished books, Tall, Dark & Lonely: A Pyte Series Novel and A Humble Heart: A Hollywood Heart's Novel. It was a very exciting time except for one little problem......

I had absolutely no idea what to do with the books now that they were done. So, of course I put the books aside and forgot about them for a little while I worked on other books. Months later I decided that maybe I should do something with them. I looked into getting published, admittedly not very hard since what I read about the publishing process wasn't exactly making me jump and down with excitement.

After reading an article about self-publishing I knew that was the way I wanted to go. I like the freedom to write what I want, when I want and publish a story that I hope others will enjoy reading. It gives me a great deal of freedom and allows me to retain full control over my work, which of course allows me to set the prices of my books and make them affordable for everyone :) Which of course is the reasoning behind the $0.99 price tag for my books.

That's how I became a writer and why I self-publish. Well, that and I'm pretty laid back and don't want to be hassled with contractual obligations. That would just cut into my writing time, time with my kids, reading time and my hot cocoa addiction. Yes, I am thoroughly addicted to hot cocoa and if you're interested in experiencing the perfect cup of cocoa you can find the recipe for my cocoa somewhere on my author blog.
