This book was originally written in 1977, and wow, have times changed for historical romances! And boy am I glad!
Lucien is not the type of hero who should be put on a pedestal. Most of the bad things that happen to our heroine are his fault, but he wants to be praised when he fixes them again. The book timeline goes a little like this: fight (and we're talking Ronnie and Sammi on Jersey Shore style fighting, not playful banter) jump into bed, fight, jump into bed, repeat. This style of story jus...more

Originally published in 1977, this has been re-issued for today’s market. Trying to write this review without using the term ‘Bodice ripper’ is useless, because that is exactly what it is and for me, this is not exactly a bad thing. Without these original bodice rippers broadening the publishing market in the 70’s I wonder if we’d have the fantastic paranormal romances we love today.

I read this book when it first came out in the mid 1970's. It was one of the first explicitly erotic romance novels (along with Rosemary Rogers' "Sweet, Savage Love"), and it had a profound impact on my adolescent sensibilities.

MOONSTRUCK MADNESS by Laurie McBain is a fast-paced, engrossing novel of the difficult choices people make to survive in a cruel world.
After losing everything in the aftermath of the 1746 Scottish Battle of Culloden, Sabrina must find a way to support her family. Her unorthodox method incurs the wrath of the arrogant and powerful Lucien, Duke of Camareigh. Again and again, these two strong personalities clash in a titanic battle of wills, even as an unwilling attraction seizes them both. But Luc...more

How often is it that you can say that a story has caught you by the seat of your pants from the first page of the prologue and not let you go until the very last sentence. This is one of those stories. It really took me by surprise and such a lovely surprise indeed it was.

This is an older romance, written I think, in the 1970's, my sister in law found it in a caravan park "library" in far northern Western Australia - and loved it.
Did I love it? The answer is no. Did I like it, the answer is yes. It was quite entertaining. Based on a young half scottish heroine, named Sabrina. Sabrina witnesses the slaughter of her clan at Culloden, and flees to England and lives as the impoverished and neglected side of of a wealthy family. Sabrina supplements her family's income...more

First published in 1977, Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain is a newly released February 1st, 2011 novel of intrigue, and romance. It reminded me of the books I read at that time by authors Kathleen Woodwiss, Rosemary Rogers and Rebecca Brandewyne. A historical romance with engaging characters, that draws you right into the story. Sabrina along with her sister Mary, Aunt Margaret and brother Richard fled from Scotland to England after their grandfather died in the Battle of Culloden. Sabrina is...more
Glad I found out that this book was originally published in 1977. Different time, different attitude as many reviewers have already pointed out. There is one scene where Lucien strikes Sabrina after she strikes him which will probably bother some readers. Personally, I think the more bothersome aspect is how Sabrina's character is underdeveloped. Nowadays, writers tend to portray their spunky audacious heroines as more mature and less impetuous. Not so in this case. At times, Sabrina behaves lik...more
I’ve really enjoyed some of the older romances that are being republished today. It allows newer romance readers like me to discover some remarkable romance reads that are truly timeless. It’s how I first discovered Laura Kinsale, but before accepting any offer to review a book I check it out the best that I can. I like to read the back cover copy, and an excerpt if I can to see if it might be something that I would enjoy reading...after all time is short, and no one likes to waste their preciou...more
It's been a pretty hardknock life for Sabrina. At age 11, her clan is destroyed, her Grandfather dies in her arms, and she is now in charge of her Sister, Brother, and Aunt since their flighty Father can't be depended on for anything in the world. Forced to become the masked Highwayman Bonnie Charlie every evening, to provide for her family, Sabrina's scrapes become even more daring and dangerous, and finally, she makes the mistake of holding up the biggest, baddest, and very handsome Lucien.

My thoughts:
This book was first published in the 70s and it shows, it was a different time for romance.
I will go back to the beginning first. Sabrina is living in England and to support her family she is a highwayman. She is a hellcat with claws. One night she steals from Lucien, the Duke of Camareigh and he wants "him, the highwayman" dead. Well we all know that is not gonna happen.
I do wonder what it is about old romance and all the drama. Oh these people hate each other, and say so too, and t...more

I am really shocked to see how high some of the ratings are for this book. I mean, did we read the same thing?
I will say that I liked the overall plot idea, with a strong heroine in Sabrina who does what she needs to do to provide for her sister and her brother. Family is really important to her, and she is really protective of them. I enjoyed her interactions with her sister Mary and her younger brother Richard most of all. Any time that she engaged in dialogue with Lucien, I wanted to quickly...more

Sabrina’s clan has been destroyed and now her grandfather has passed away leaving her to care for her family because her father cannot be depended upon, and all of this happened when she is only 11 years old. So how she cope? At an older age, Sabrina becomes a masked highwayman in order to provide for her family. Her alter ego is Bonnie Charlie, and the her life is a dangerous one that only becomes more perilous when she attempts to rob Lucien, Duke of Camareigh.

I have loved this book since the first time I read it many, many years ago! It was on of the first romance novels I ever read. I finally found it again for my nook. I only wish that the remaining novels by this author would be as easy to find.
Sabrina and Lucien are perfectly matched and even though they have a rocky road to true love they do make it in the end.
Laurie McBain only wrote 7 books but if you can find them you should read them if you like romances!

When I first picked up the book, I didn't notice that it was a reprint from the 70s. Now the actions of Lucien and Sabrina and the way they act makes more sense. Lucien, I thought, was the most enjoyable character (except the part where he slaps Sabrina). He attitude was more adult-like compared to Sabrina. I thought her attitude was very child-like and very annoying. Her constant complaining about how Lucien betrayed her and how this isn't what she wanted got old. I almost wanted her to wake up...more
This was the first historical romance novel I read. I bought it at a garage sale for 50 cents and it started a whole new life for me. By the early 80's I was back in college and knew I wanted to write. Eventually I sold my first book in 1988, a historical romance novel. When I wrote BEWITCHING, I made the hero Alec a duke because of Lucien in MM.
This is my second book by author Laurie McBain the first one being, Devils Desires being the first, and I have to say that I enjoyed Moonstruck Madness immensely. There is something so alluring about the way she writes that makes the reader set up an take notice. It may be due to the fact that the book was originally published in 1977, and that adds a different style of writing. I also loved the characters in this book and the they played out, as well as the plots. It also offered a few twists a...more
One of my all time favs from back in the day. Unearthed it from the keeper box after an email conversation w/SBSarah, after which I wonder: Oh my God, what if I just gave her an opening to totally rip my beloved romance in a public forum. On reread, there's some problems, like how do these two people fall in love? And then I remind myself that Sabrina is supposed to be 17, and unlike so many other teen age romance heroines, McBain writes her as one, which I love. She's impulsive, immature, self...more
This book was originally published in 1977, but that isn’t evident when reading the story. The only thing that struck me as “old school” was the hatred turning to love between Lucien and Sabrina. I remember when I started reading romances in the early 90s that this was a pretty common theme in older romances. I thoroughly enjoyed Sabrina, she is headstrong and at times a little too stubborn, but she takes care of her family and isn’t waiting to be rescued. Lucien was different. I took me awhile...more
