Prelim Review: I adore Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. Its one of my top five animes of all time quite frankly, so when I saw Kodansha America releasing the manga I got excited.

Except this is literally a scene by scene rehash of the first episode of series one (the 'Laughing Man' season). I'm pretty sure if I read this while watching the first episode it would match up almost perfectly. I don't know how I feel about that. I just have to say that the main female character's outfit on the cover of the book, as well as during the opening sequence of the story, was so ridiculous it completely distracted me, and made me lose any respect for the story. Seriously, look at that outfit! I doubt even a stripper would wear something like that--full body spandex is at least easy to move in, as well as attractive. It's essentially the first episode of the first animated series, but still interesting to read nonetheless. I enjoyed the artwork, though if I had to read each chapter as a separate issue I think I would have gone mad.
This version of Ghost in the Shell is a continuation of the of the anime's recent re-interpretation of Masamune Shirow's original manga and anime. Major Kunsanagi remains a central character but the cyberpunk is dropped a little bit more in the background and the other members of Section 9 are given a chance in the spotlight. This first volume adapts the first episode of the SAC tv show. Some scenes are added but mostly the stories are identical. The art is nothing special.
