This book opens in the 1920's with Mr. Charles Galstanberry and his physically fragile but emotionally strong wife, Eleanor who has just given birth to their daughter Aundrea. Eleanor doesn't live for many months after Aundrea is born, but she takes her remaining time to write a special journal full of notes for her only daughter and to inspire her husband to give Aundrea as many opportunities as possible. The Girlz of Galstanberry begins as the prominent Charles Galstanberry awaits the birth of this son, Andrew A son that he a has always wanted and intends to pass along the family legacy. Mr. Galstanberry is quite surprised that his newborn child is not a son, but a daughter, Aundrea. A daughter who will be educated and have every opportunity that a male child would have (which was not so common in 1926) as this is the dying wish of Mrs. Galstanberry who has come down with pneumonia shortly after More...

I enjoyed it! Ms. Wolff's debut novel, The Girlz of Galstanberry features five spunky, sassy but smart American girls from varied backgrounds who were accepted into the exclusive Galstanberry school. This book gives you a glimpse into their respective lives pre-Galstanberry. I'm still chuckling from the characters weeks later. It's a great read! You'll find both on Amazon or through the author's website. The second book in the series arrives this month. Read both so you may relive your pre More...

From the boroughs of New York, to the beaches of San Francisco, girls hail from all walks of life, to sport the violet blazer and pink beret of the Galstanberry Girls Academy. Five girls from different cities, socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicities are admitted into Galstanberry Girls Academy. Their varied personalities and backgrounds lead to inevitable drama and internal conflicts. However, with each triumph and tribulation, the girls grow, transforming themselves and the academy.

This review was tough to write for me. As a reader at my age, I would have rated this a 3. However I realize that these are meant for younger readers, girls who need someone to connect with, and so I tried to read and review using that thought process. I hope I did this book justice, since it wasn't necessarily written for me.

That being said, I have to applaud G.S. Wolff for writing such varied and unique characters. Each of the five girls in the book is completely different from the More...

I admit it, I love to read children's and YA books as well as "grown-up" books! I found this quite by accident I and I thought my 11 yo daughter would enjoy it. It was a fun read although the teenage vernacular was a little confusing at times. I love how the author identified each of the girls and gave of background into their environments before they reached Galstanberry. My daughter will read the book next (she actually read book #2 first) and I can't wait to see her reaction.
