So, this is a set of three short stories that all take place prior to "Heirs of Mars". Adorably, their names correspond roughly to the setting of each story, and create a nice triumvirate (Heaven, Earth, Hell). Be warned though, these stories are quite short, I blew through them in one sitting.
There are two ways to evaluate "Heirs of Mars: Preludes": as a stand-alone anthology and as an expansion of the original novel. I enjoyed the set of short stories as an expansion because I wanted to hear m...more

With "Heirs of Mars" on my TBR stack, but seriously lacking reading time, I at least got around to read and enjoy this little book which is basically, as the title suggests, a prelude to the novel.
The reader will be thrown right into the middle of, well, not the action as such, but a intricately woven world which Joseph Robert Lewis has created in this science fiction universe. I really liked these "preludes" to the novel Heirs of Mars. I have not yet read the novel in which these preludes are based, but the short stories definitely grabbed my attention and interest for the novel.
There are three short stories in this volume that describe the events leading up to Heirs of Mars. I was really intrigued by the culture of synthetic beings, as well as the "clones" that seem to infiltrate the bases on Mars. Mars also seems like a relatively unhappy or just plain boring place...more

This is actually a collection of 3 short stories taking place before the novel "Heirs of Mars." The stories certainly did their job. I have never read the original novel, so I think there were some points that I may have missed in the stories that I wouldn't have had I been more familiar with the characters. However, the stories certainly left me wanting to know more about this world. The first two stories take place almost 2 decades before the novel, while the last story leads directly into the...more

‘Preludes’ is a collection of 3 stories set in the world of Heirs of Mars.
‘To Reign in Hell’ is set 19 years before the events in the novel and tells us more about the AI intelligence Mother aboard the satellite around Venus.
‘To Walk the Earth’ is set 18 years before and details Asher’s last days on Earth and the lover he left behind.
‘To Serve in Hell’ is set 1 day before and deals with a Martian colonist’s view of the Cloners.
These stories are an excellent addi...more

Following in the model science fiction footsteps of those such as Isaac Asimov and Piers Anthony, Heirs of Mars: Preludes tells three distinct stories as an introduction to the novel Heirs of Mars (HoM).
These stories are succinct, yet vivid, glimpses of a futuristic human culture where man and machines exist together in a less than utopian society and a lack of freedom for all creates mistrust and anger. Human migration across the galaxy has not been the ideal imagined and the colonies are dyin...more

This is a collection of short stories that give some back ground to the Heirs of Mars, also by Joseph Robert Lewis. The stories, although not necessary to understanding Heirs of Mars did give some back ground that readers who enjoyed Heirs of Mars might also find interesting. As a stand alone book however I am not sure that readers who have not read Heirs of Mars, or do not plan to read Heirs of Mars, would find the book very interesting. I was interested. I enjoy Lewis' writing style and I will...more
Before reading Heirs of Mars, I strongly suggest you read Heirs of Mars: Preludes. It’s a brief anthology of character-study short stories that provides essential back story information needed to fully understand Heirs of Mars. Bottom line: Without those stories, it will be much more difficult to follow the various 6 story lines in Heirs of Mars. To read the rest of my review, go to http://popcornreads.com/?p=1286
