Waking Beauty by Leah Wilcox and illustrated by Lydia Monks is a funny read aloud for children of all ages. In this entertaining retelling of the classic fairy tale, Prince Charming goes in search of a dragon to slay, instead, he finds the snoring beauty. Fairies attempt, many times, to tell the Prince what he must do to wake Sleeping Beauty, but he is too impatient to listen. He tries many different ways to wake Sleeping Beauty up, shouting, jumping on her bed, and dumping water on her head to...more
My 6 year old and I absolutely fell in love with this book! We read it aloud to my husband tonight and got a few chuckles out of him as well! I plan to read it to both buy it for my school library and read it to the Kindergarten classes during their Kings and Queens unit.

We recently read Falling For Rapunzel and thought it was a charming take on the classic fairytale. I saw, while writing the review for that book, that this author/illustrator team also collaborated on this story, so I just had to put it on hold at our local library.
This is also a funny little story that is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale Sleeping Beauty. The rhyming narrative is humorous and our girls had fun guessing what Prince Charming would do next. The illustrations are color...more

I first introduced Leah Wilcox to my kids when my boys were young many years ago and they loved the book Falling for Rapunzel and this past week at the library my 5 year old daughter found Waking Beauty. It didn't disappoint, it was as funny as the first story I read by this author!

I like the childish art, the rhyming story, and the mocking of sleeping beauty. The prince is clearly a first grade boy from his antics, although he does actually kiss the princess finally and rather like it. When the princess punched him, 7 year old asked (after I moralistically pointed out that we do not punch people, we use our words) why she hit him for kissing her.
Despite the punch (and kiss), a cute twist on princess stories, and I'll take what I can get for my princess-oriented child, wh...more

This retelling of the classic fairy tale gives a reluctant Prince Charming a chance to show off his mental muscles in thinking of ways to wake up the girl hidden away in the tower. The book is a rhyming book, which normally makes me groan inwardly as the kids bring them to me, but this case the rhymes are well done and not overly cutesy.
This is a great confidence builder book, as kids who are learning read will enjoy reading it to themselves or to their younger siblings.

This books takes on the classic fairytale, Sleeping Beauty. Prince Charming is clueless of how to wake up the sleeping princess. His ideas are no more typical than what a boy would do in this case (jumping on the bed, throwing water on her), but with the help of three fairies, he finally gets it right! Everyone knows Sleeping Beauty has to be woken with a kiss! The rhyming narrative is humorous and this book had me guessing what the prince was going to do next. The illustrations are colorful and...more

The beginning of this review is the same as the review for Wilcox's other book because I spent some of my office hours Friday reading these two books. I know, I know, someday someone will figure out that letting me be a professor wasn't a good idea. I should definitely be chained to factory equipment somewhere. Anyway, here goes...

See the bright pink cover? What you can't see is the glitter on the title too. Looks like quite a book for little girls, doesn't it? But I am here to tell you that this is one version of Sleeping Beauty that will have the little boys clamoring for another reading!

I absolutely adores this book for several reasons: preschoolers get it! They anticipate the rhyme, laugh in the right places, and follow along well. The prince is so silly and does such ridiculous things, it's nice to see a little role reversal. The princess packs a punch! When the prince kisses and wakes her up she pops him one and asks him who told him he could kiss her?! The rhyme never feels forced and makes reading the story easy. It's just a really fun story and a great fractured fairy tal...more
This was a fun take on the "sleeping beauty" theme. Read this to a 1st grade class and they laughed and giggled at the clueless prince who tried everything to wake up the sleeping beauty except a kiss. When realizing it would take a kiss he commented on her 100 yr old bad breath. He tried dousing her with water, jumping on her bed and a few other unconventional ways to wake her up. A fun read with fun photos.
Wilcox's stories that turn fairytales around for a different perspective are quite funny and pleasantly silly. In this book, based on Sleeping Beauty, the prince doesn't take the time to listen to the fairy godmothers and so tries every other way to wake Beauty, but with a kiss. You can also make it slightly interactive if you get the kids to guess "kiss" at the end of the stanzas.
This is one of the wittiest children's books I have read! Waking Beauty can honestly be read to both girls AND boys, which really surprised me. Clever storyline with adorably endearing drawings and gafes on the prince's part that just make kids (and myself) groan and laugh and shout out the answer. I highly recommend this book and just about anything else that Leah Wilcox writes.
Everyone knows the story about Sleeping Beauty...how only a kiss from a handsome Prince will wake her.
But what if the Prince is slightly clueless and won't listen to the fairies guarding Beauty?
An hilarious turn of events turns this classic fairy tale inside out, and children will laugh out loud as the Prince finally gets the message and Beauty finally wakes up.

Genre: Fairy Tale (fractured)
This is another funny version of Sleeping Beauty. The prince won't listen to the advice of 3 fairies who are trying to tell him how to wake Beauty up. He keeps trying different methods and when he realizes he must kiss her he worries about "100 years of morning breath." I think children would love this humorous variation of Sleeping Beauty.

The craziest spin on the Sleeping Beauty story I've ever heard, and a LOT of fun to read aloud to the kids! It was a good companion read with "The Interrupting Chicken" (by David Ezra Stein), with the prince interrupting everybody. Fun twists, fun story. I wanted to give this book 3 1/2 stars; the art work isn't quite my favorite, but it works for the kids.
a spin on an old classic. in this version the prince is unaware that he must kiss the princess to wake her. He is a tad daft. the fairy godmothers try to give him clues but he keeps taking the wrong measures to wake her. when he finally realizes it is a kiss she needs he is nervous and of course worried as girls have germs...but he gives it a try - only to end up on the receiving end of an upset princesses left hook. the prince is knocked out cold and now it is up to the princess to wake him. wr...more
My two-year-old princess-in-training, really liked this book. I think the plot was over her head but it was a cute story — a fun twist on Sleeping Beauty: what if the Prince wasn’t quite the romantic we make him out to be? (And what if Sleeping Beauty had a little more spunk in her?). Fun pictures in this one.
Ever get tired of the cheesy retellings of classic fairy tales? This will make you laugh! In Waking Beauty, Prince Charming just can't figure out why this gal would be so lazy by sleeping so long. The fairies encourage him to wake her up, so he tries everything he can think of to wake the Lazybones up.
A comic take on Sleeping Beauty, told in rhyme. An excellent storytime book for preschoolers, who will be calling out the solution before the Prince manages to figure it out."

Becky - your boys will probably enjoy this one better
Another fun book from Leah Wilcox, though I do like Falling For Rapunzel a little bit better.
My favorite line from the book goes something like:
"A hundred years of morning breath? That's sure to be the kiss of death!"

Oh, so funny twist on Sleeping Beauty! The humor is sure to get any class full of children chuckling (or better yet, belly laughing). It's a great spin off of a well known story, so it's great to make text-to-text connections or to compare and contrast the similar stories.
