Waking Beauty by Leah Wilcox and illustrated by Lydia Monks is a funny read aloud for children of all ages. In this entertaining retelling of the classic fairy tale, Prince Charming goes in search of a dragon to slay, instead, he finds the snoring beauty. Fairies attempt, many times, to tell the Prince what he must do to wake Sleeping Beauty, but he is too impatient to listen. He tries many different ways to wake Sleeping Beauty up, shouting, jumping on her bed, and dumping water on her head to ...more

My 6 year old and I absolutely fell in love with this book! We read it aloud to my husband tonight and got a few chuckles out of him as well! I plan to read it to both buy it for my school library and read it to the Kindergarten classes during their Kings and Queens unit.

Waking Beauty is a hilarious retelling of Sleeping Beauty in which Prince Charming just does not get the fact that he must KISS the princess to wake her up. He tries everything he can EXCEPT kissing her to wake her ...more

I first introduced Leah Wilcox to my kids when my boys were young many years ago and they loved the book Falling for Rapunzel and this past week at the library my 5 year old daughter found Waking Beauty. It didn't disappoint, it was as funny as the first story I read by this author!

Waking Beauty is of course a spoof on Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming is clueless in this re-telling of the classic tale. Very funny. I didn't realize she had more then one book...so I will defina...more

The beginning of this review is the same as the review for Wilcox's other book because I spent some of my office hours Friday reading these two books. I know, I know, someday someone will figure out that letting me be a professor wasn't a good idea. I should definitely be chained to factory equipment somewhere. Anyway, here goes...

I don't read a lot of children's books (because I don't have children), but this book was written by the daughter of one of my current students, and she...more

See the bright pink cover? What you can't see is the glitter on the title too. Looks like quite a book for little girls, doesn't it? But I am here to tell you that this is one version of Sleeping Beauty that will have the little boys clamoring for another reading!

When Prince Charming approaches the castle covered in vines, he hears a horrible noise that he thinks is a dragon. He draws his sword, prepared to do battle, but to his dismay finds a snoring princess fast asleep. Thre...more

I absolutely adores this book for several reasons: preschoolers get it! They anticipate the rhyme, laugh in the right places, and follow along well. The prince is so silly and does such ridiculous things, it's nice to see a little role reversal. The princess packs a punch! When the prince kisses and wakes her up she pops him one and asks him who told him he could kiss her?! The rhyme never feels forced and makes reading the story easy. It's just a really fun story and a great fractured fairy tal...more

Genre: Fairy Tale (fractured)

This is another funny version of Sleeping Beauty. The prince won't listen to the advice of 3 fairies who are trying to tell him how to wake Beauty up. He keeps trying different methods and when he realizes he must kiss her he worries about "100 years of morning breath." I think children would love this humorous variation of Sleeping Beauty.

a spin on an old classic. in this version the prince is unaware that he must kiss the princess to wake her. He is a tad daft. the fairy godmothers try to give him clues but he keeps taking the wrong measures to wake her. when he finally realizes it is a kiss she needs he is nervous and of course worried as girls have germs...but he gives it a try - only to end up on the receiving end of an upset princesses left hook. the prince is knocked out cold and now it is up to the princess to wake him. wr...more

Ever get tired of the cheesy retellings of classic fairy tales? This will make you laugh! In Waking Beauty, Prince Charming just can't figure out why this gal would be so lazy by sleeping so long. The fairies encourage him to wake her up, so he tries everything he can think of to wake the Lazybones up.

This childrens' book is a hilarious new take on the classic Sleeping Beauty. This prince is... well... not very smart, and he can't figure out how to wake up the princess. All the crazy things the prince tries to wake her up had all of us cracking up! I liked this as much as my 3 1/2 year old!

I loved this book! It is so child like and funny. Both me and my kids laughed out loud while we read together. :) It is a must read for all. :) The Prince doesn't know that he needs to wake Beauty with a kiss and tries many different ways to wake her up. Loved it. :)

OMG <3

Such a clever twist on this fairy tale! Prince Charming doesn't want to kiss Sleeping Beauty awake because... she has cooties. Don't let the pink cover fool you - this is a great one for little boys (or little girls who don't need rescuing, thankyouverymuch).

A comic take on Sleeping Beauty, told in rhyme. An excellent storytime book for preschoolers, who will be calling out the solution before the Prince manages to figure it out."

CIP: Prince Charming tries all sorts of silly ways to wake Sleeping Beauty before he learns how he is really supposed to wake her up.

SLJ: "The creators of the comical Falling for Rapunzel (Putnam, 2003) present an equally funny spoof of "Sleeping Beauty. Filled with puns and lively wo...more

Another fun book from Leah Wilcox, though I do like Falling For Rapunzel a little bit better.

My favorite line from the book goes something like:
"A hundred years of morning breath? That's sure to be the kiss of death!"

We read Waking Beauty by Leah Wilcox. This reminded us of Falling for Rapunzel by the same author. We thought this book was funny because the prince didn't know he was suppose to wake sleeping beauty with a kiss.
Lydia
Oh, so funny twist on Sleeping Beauty! The humor is sure to get any class full of children chuckling (or better yet, belly laughing). It's a great spin off of a well known story, so it's great to make text-to-text connections or to compare and contrast the similar stories.

If you have a young daughter and have not read her one of Leah Wilcox's books, shame on you. These are the best read-aloud children's books ever. I am willing to read them over and over, which is a big deal for me.
Laurie
So hilarious that both my son and daughter ask to read it over and over. It is a rhyming book so it is a great book for pointing out rhymes. And some of the ways they try to wake up Beauty are hilarious

Dear Ms. Wilcox,
Please write more books. They are witty, clever and leave my children giggling and asking for more! We love the illustrations! We hope to see more from you!
Thanks

This is a fun version of the fairytale Sleeping Beauty that is all about "how" the prince tries to wake up beauty. He tries a myriad of funny ways, and it finally works!

Great book for a "Fractured Fairytale" storytime. Not only do the kids think its hilarious, but it has a great rhythym and rhymes that keep it flowing along.

Wilcox writes some hilarious twists on classic fairy tales. See also "Falling for Rapunzel," (four stars).

Thanks for the recommendation, Ann.

"One hundred years of morning breath. Wow! That could be the kiss of death!" Funniest line ever. Love classic tales with a twist.

This children's book had my kids all laughing! It was amazing. I LOVED it...even more than the Rapunzel one...which is saying a lot.

The giggles continued as we read this "spin" on Sleeping Beauty. The Prince's various approaches for waking the princess will have you laughing as much as your kids... So, so very funny!

Recommends it for: older kids big enough to get the jokes.
The art work kind of goes between cute and weird. The Prince looks sort of like an oddly shaped wooden spoon with Dennis the Menace's hair and some odd blob of pink plastic slapped on for a nose.
The rhymes work well. Kids who have this read to them will be filling in that line the Prince never seems to get and the boys will like his views on "girl germs". And despite the glitter and sparkles, the princess in this fractured fairy tale is no Disney cartoon princess--she's got a wic...more
