This is the poet and playwright Adrian Mitchell's version of Gogol's classic satire on human vanity with its story of a penniless nobody from Moscow who is mistaken for a government inspector by the corrupt and self-seeking officials of a small town in Tsarist Russia.

'El inspector' puede que sea la obra más divertida que he leído nunca, la comedia más perfecta que me he encontrado nunca, hilarante y seria a la vez, grotesca pero equilibrada, una sátira implacable pero también una reflexión moral de lo más pesimista.

En un pequeño pueblo ruso de provincias, delante del anuncio de la llegada de un inspector general de Moscou con instrucciones secretas, las autoridades locales (el director del hospital, la directora del colegio, el jefe de correos, ...more

Cheating a bit here, I didn't actually read this. I saw it at the Young Vic in June, starring Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh) as The Mayor and Doon Mackichan (Smack the Pony) as Anna, his wife. Me and my dad thoroughly enjoyed the play and how darkly funny it was, portraying how corrupt a small Russian village is when a Government Inspector visits. Well worth a read if you haven't seen it.

Devo, devo vederlo...

that play was so amusing when we studied it,away from the hard language it written ,i loved it so much perhaps the way my teacher learned to us made me interested in it,till this day i feel grateful to my teacher:)

The Government Inspector is a short, fast-paced satirical farce. I felt like it lacked some of Gogol's habitual mystic insanity, but as a comedy it fits neatly into the vein of its contemporaries.

As expected from Gogol, this comedy came out with underlying criticisms. In the story, the commotion began in town when gossip about the imminent arrival of general inspector was heard. Anton Antonovich, the mayor, set out to impress the general inspector despite the poor governance he had. The problem was that the general inspector came in disguise, and no one knew exactly how he looked. So Anton Antonovich hastily spot the alleged general inspector and started to make an approach.

the only thing funnier than this play was that some cat came up to me while I was reading it and asked, "you studying to become THAT?"

Brilliant comedy by one of the masters of Russian lit. Pokes fun at mistaken identities and foolishness of Imperial Russian society.

I had no idea I would enjoy this as much as I did! Very funny play; looking forward to seeing it live!

This is one of Gogol's classics. I'm not sure if I've ever read a play before, but it was worth it.
Casey
Timeless tale of small town corruption, greed and avarice. Brilliant comic play.

I'm astounded tha this was written in the early 19th century. It seems so descriptive of how we live now.

I really enjoyed this read. I could imagine this being a hilarious play to watch. Great characters.

It was a broad farce and satire mocking pre-revolutionary Russian bureaucracy. It was completely predictable and very obvious. I guess its OK for the genre, but the genre is not really my thing. As for the writing, I think the translation got in the way.

I would recommend for those who appreciate the genre.

We read this play during our meeting. I would have liked to read it ahead of time and study it because it is suppose to be Gogol’s best work. The play caused such a furor when first performed that he was driven into exile.

Well I really liked it .... It's hilarious though being painful as it shockingly reflects the social situation in Russia at this period of time and the shows the size of corruption that dwelt into the society...
Bruce
A delightful little play by this master of Russian humor. It is universal in it portrayal of sycophantism - don't we see this occurring every day? Reading it is a continual chuckle.

Enjoyed reading the book. Would love to see the play (don't remember if I had or not). Interesting how a trivial personality was mistaken for the GI by the whole lot.

Nikolai Gogol steps up, and lines it to left field for a double! Some of his very best, a bright light in a dark period for Russian literature.

Gogol was born in the Ukrainian Cossack village of Sorochyntsi, in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire, present-day Ukraine. His mother was a descendant of Polish nobility. His father Vasily Gogol-Yanovsky, a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks, belonged to the petty gentry, wrote poetry in Russian and Ukrainian, and was an amateur Ukrainian-language playwright who died when Gogol was 15 years ...more
