Julia Donaldson does an excellent job on writing this creative story book. The first time I read the story, I initially felt it was a very long read for children as I thought it was long myself and repetitive but upon reading it a second, third time, I realised I had not fully appreciated how good the storybook was. Complete with rhyme and repitition it captured my attention and the children to whom I was reading to. The use of animals was a good idea as children were able to point out different...more

I read this book on SEA to a nursery class and they absolutely loved it.
The story is about a mouse's journey through the woods who meets a number of other animals such as a fox, an owl and a snake. Each of these animals wish to eat him but in order to prevent this from happening, the mouse makes up what he believes is an imaginary animal called the 'Gruffalo' and states that he is going to have lunch with this Gruffalo. The Gruffalo is described as a terrifying animal who enjoys eat...more

A little, mischievous mouse, strolls around the deep, dark woods and encounters many animals, a fox, an owl, a silly snake and more. They all offer to meet him for tea, but the mouse refuses. He tells them that he has been made a better offer, that is, a feast with the giant Gruffalo. The mouse creates an imaginary, Gruffalo, one which has “terrible tusks and terrible claws”, enough for the other animals to visualise an ugly monster, lose their appetite and frightfully disappear, leaving the mo...more
This is one of my all time favourites!!
A clever mouse is walking around the deep dark wood and encounters many animals on his way, including a fox, an owl and a snake. Knowing that the animals would eat him, the mouse invents a mythical creature he is going to see called the gruffalo. The gruffalo is indeed a creature to be scared of!!
Now eventually he actually meets a real life gruffalo and knowing that the gruffalo intends to eat him as well he shows the gruffalo how sc...more

“The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson & Illustrated by Julia Donaldson
This story about a mouse’s journey through the woods is an excellent read aimed for kids aged 3-7. This story shows of how cunningness and intelligence prevails to evade danger. The mouse makes up a fictional character “Gruffalo” with a number of defining features whose favourite food coincidently happens to be the animal in which he is talking to. In turn all the animals flee scared that the Gruffalo will eat them. Then the ...more

The Gruffalo by Julie Donaldson is a book aimed at children between the ages of two and five. It is a lovely book to read to a group of children during circle time.
The book tells the story of a mouse who wanders through the forest in which he lives only to encounter a fox, a snake and an owl separately. All three animals invite the mouse to 'dinner' at their house in turn. One can only assume that roast mouse is being served at each dinner table that night. The mouse politely refuses b...more

I first came across the Gruffalo when BBC3 pretty much kept it on replay. I then decided to buy the book for my niece and found that its far far better in comparison to the film version. What enhanced the qualities of the book even more was the fact that it had sounds! This meant that my niece could not only listen to me read, but join in by associating the correct sound with the right animal.

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson was introduced to me by one of the children while I worked in a pre-school. The Gruffalo is a clever and funny story about a clever little mouse who outsmarts all the different creatures in the forest who want to eat him from a fox to an owl to a snake and also the Gruffalo. This is a humorous tale that keeps children amused and anticipating the next page as the story goes on and how the mouse shows the Gruffalo that he is the scariest animal in the forest.

This is a very enjoyable book to read, great for both children and parents. The book tells the story of a mouse's walk in the woods. On his way the mouse comes across 3 dangerous animals (a fox, an owl, and a snake). Each of these animals, clearly intent on eating the mouse, by inviting him back to their home. The crafty mouse declines each offer. He tells each animal that he has plans to eat with his friend, a gruffalo, whose favourite food happens to be the relevant animal, and describes the fe...more

Brain over brawn
An acquaintance with young children lent me this book, when he knew I was interested in writing children's stories myself. He said his children loved the book and, once I'd read it, I could see why. It's a beautifully illustrated tale, demonstrating how brain can overcome brawn, as a small mouse escapes the clutches of various, dangerous woodland animals by threatening them with a huge, hideous and apparently imaginary creature called the Gruffalo, only to then be me...more

The Gruffalo in my opinion is one of the most enjoyable and creative books written for young children from ages three to five. The book comes alive with contrasting characters which attract the children's attention and draw them in. The main little amusing character that captures our attention is the clever mouse who manages to trick all his predators and escapes the possibilities of been a meal that evening. The little mouse does this by inventing a make believe scary animal called 'The Gruffal...more
The Gruffalo is a classic children’s read with a beautifully written story and wonderful illustrations about a little mouse who takes a journey into the woods. On his way he encounters a fox, an owl and a snake who all want to eat the little mouse, until he tells them he is expecting a visit from the Gruffalo! “He has terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth and terrible jaws”. This book tells the tale of a scary Gruffalo,
is he real, is he pretend, nobody knows.
A sly little mouse describes him so true,
other animals listen intently, their ears fixed like glue.
Through the deep dark woods does little mouse go,
announcing his meeting with the fierce gruffalo.
His aim is to put off predators leering in the woods,
who all want to eat little mouse, they surely would.
A fox comes along, thinking of his meal for the day,

The Gruffalo tells the story of a mouse, who on his travels encounters a variety of wood land animals that all have aspirations of eating the mouse for lunch. The mouse, hoping to escape being a snack, uses his imagination and cunning and tells each animal the story of the fearsome ‘Gruffalo’ who is the mouse’s friend, and who would very much like to eat the antagonists themselves. Little does the mouse know that he is soon to meet his imaginary friend, who in fact is very real, and he would als...more
How had I missed The Gruffalo? I think maybe it was just one of those things that got a little over-hyped for me, but we'd just got it back in stock at work, so I picked it up for storytime. And it's brilliant.

I absolutely love this book and it is no surprise Julia Donaldson is the current Children’s Laureate. ‘The Gruffalo’ tells the story of a witty mouse who strolls through the deep dark woods and encounters a fox, owl and snake along the way who all want to make him their meal of the day. Being the crafty creature he is, the mouse ingeniously frightens them off by inventing the terrifying ‘Gruffalo’, who he is supposedly meeting. All goes fine until the mouse unexpectedly comes face to face with t...more

I’ve heard a lot about this book but I have not read it until now. The books has morals to the story, one is not to lie! Also no matter how some one looks, you should never judge them. It is a great book for 3 -5 year olds.

This book is a very humorous approach. The book has many creative concepts and involves academic features particularly from science (biology). The book discretely explores food chains as it poetically and humorously describes how the mouse avoids being eating by it’s predators. It is therefore a good read for children because it is educational and creatively written. One strong point in particualar is the ability this book has to make you laugh- a great read.

The Gruffalo is a story of an extremely sly mouse, who we follow on a journey through the woods. Whilst on his travels the mouse meets various predatory creatures who invite him to dine with them, but who really have plans to eat him. The clever mouse explains to each that he is on his way to meet the Gruffalo, a fearsome creature who the other animals are wary of. The Gruffalo is in fact a fictional creature which the mouse has created in order to protect himself. However there is a twist at th...more
In the big dark woods, a mouse is going for a walk when he meets a fox that, thinking the mouse looks like a good meal, tries to lure him back to his den. The mouse is an intelligent little thing, and explains to the fox that he can't come because he's having lunch with a gruffalo. The fox has never heard of a gruffalo before, so the mouse starts to describe a terrible monster who likes to eat roasted fox. The fox, terrified, runs away. The mouse is molested by an owl next, and then a snake, and...more
I wish I had a dollar for every time I've read this book because my 2 year old cannot get enough of it. It was a gift for her 2nd birthday and hardly a day has gone by since that we've not read it to her. It's a bit long so initially Kidlet would flip through the pages before I could finish reading it, but after four months, she sits through it and waits for her favorite parts. She even learned the cadence of the words, so when she asks for it we recognize more the rhythm than the actual words s...more
