I've read several of Isabella Byrd's books, and I must say, I will be sad when I've read all she wrote. She must have been a remarkable woman, and I would love to have known her. Her descriptions of people and places and her attention to detail are just amazing. She has unbounded curiosity; she writes about economics, architecture, agriculture, fashion with equal confidence. I'm not as familiar with the geography of the area as I might be, so I found myself consulting a map frequently while read ...more

Had to get out the atlas to see the routes she was taking, especially a topographical map.
The descriptions of the clothes and "houses" really puts you into the time and place.

I read this on a Nook and wish I had a physical copy to be able to read the footnotes at the time they are noted in the text. By the end of the book I've forgotten what is being referred to in the footnotes.

After resting up from that expedition I will take on volume 2.
