What makes Darren Shan's books a great read is that even though they're over 200 pages long, I can easily finish them. The action within this book is very quick and there's always something new for you to read. The ending for me was a little shocking, but the way that Darren Shan writes makes you want to read the next book. The Vampire's Assistant is the 2nd book in a series of seven books. This book was quite gruesome but I liked it all the same. It is about The Vampires Assistant (Darren Shan) returning to the Cirque Du Freak with his guide Mr Crepsley (he was the one who turned him into a half-vampire). The difficult bit in the book comes when Darren Shan realises that he cannot stick to his humanity because he has to drink blood to survive. Darren agreed to become a half-vampire and to work as an assistant to Mr. Crepsley, a vampire, in order to save his friend's life. Book Review Essay
The book I read was Cirque De Freak Vampires Assistant, by Darren Shan. It was a great book for all readers, but mostly for a little more expierienced readers. It also is for horror or action readers.
My favorite character in the story is Darren because he is smart, good at sports, loves adrenaline, and most of all loves adventure. He is courageous and makes the story interesting.

Las portadas de esta saga son bastantes feas. Las considero muy pobres a nivel de diseño, pero lo justifico con el hecho de que son libros de hace más de 10 años, cuando las editoriales no invertían mucho en sus portadas.

These books are pretty messed up, even if the majority of the audience probably disagrees. They're, in simple terms, the story of a teenage boy who is forced to experience a lot of horrible things in order to save the life of his best friend.

So..why did I enjoy the first two books in this series so much?

To me, they're written in a strange light-hearted way that makes things seem much a lot less climatic, by involving humour and having Darren be a surprisingly brave set of eyes to see things through. With the humour as well, this style reminded me a lot of the Percy Jackson series. That's probably a lot of the reason I liked the books so much. It's classed as a young adult 'horror' book, but it's not terrifying than more of an adventure until you sit to think about it.

There are a lot of issues I have with these books, don't get me wrong. (How light-hearted Darren was about the whole thing, the excessive use of exclamation marks, short chapters, how the first two books should have been one book (which is why I have wrote the review here instead of splitting it)) But these two were interesting reads and very easy to get through, which has been great for me considering I've been sick over the past day or so and needed to not concentrate as much as I would when reading the other books I'm reading. It's a very quirky book and I really enjoyed reading it. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!(less)

Review:
This book was much more enjoyable to me than its prior counterpart. Although I am still unable to decipher Darren's age (I'm guessing twelve) and the dialogue is still flimsy, I found myself easily overlooking these faults and enjoying the story and adventure. It was really nice to see Darren interacting with more people his age, and his new friend, Evra Von, the snake boy, seems like he could be a pretty interesting guy. We are also introduced to Mr. Tiny in this book, who manages to be almost too weird to be frightening yet at the same time manages it quite well and has you wondering what sort of part he will play in the series. Granted, some of the characters are stereotypical, something that I have always disliked in a good portion of youth books. For example, Darren and his friends meet R.V., who is a vegetarian fighting against roads being built to help save the environment. Of course, he is an extremest, does drugs, smells bad, and says "man" a lot. I find it really disheartening when cliches like this are written, especially in books geared toward a younger audience. After all, shouldn't we be showing them that people aren't always the cliche? That aside though, I found this book an enjoyable read and have already opened up the next one. It's fast paced with a good macabre twists and originality.(less)

This book was better. The action at the end was pretty cool, even though it was really short. Kinda sad too, but I remembered when I read it in the past, it was a lot sadder. I think the emotional part of it should have been elaborated on a little more in order to have truly brought out the sadness of that scene. And the fact that he had no choice but to drink that particular person's blood should have, to me at least, be more deep?

A decent follow-up in the series, albeit a little predictable. As soon as he befriended RV, the passionate eco-warrior, you pretty much know where the story is headed. I was disturbed by the ending though not repulsed, I've read gorier scenes. The fact that the ending stirred some emotions in me made me think that Shan is up to something good with this series.

His unchallenged strength causes him to be alone, as he can not make any human friends without breaking their hands. Larten, who regrets blooding Darren, decides to take him to the Cirque du Freak.

He makes good friends with Evra Von, the snake boy. When they meet a young boy called Sam Grest, things begin to look up...and down. A local hippie known as Reggie Veggie befriends the trio of boys, but soon begins to learn about the animals that the freaks are feeding on- stolen from farmers. Reggie soon begins to worry Darren, but he becomes preoccupied on his way to visit Mr Tall- Truska, the bearded lady, has knitted Darren with a new set of clothes. Darren must then do Evra's chores as he is tending to his sick snake, and forgets about telling Mr Tall about Reggie that day.

A night of performance comes, as Mr Tall finally gets wind of Reggie from Darren, but doubts that he can do any damage. Darren, who still refuses to drink blood, decides not to perform and sets off. He hears a sound coming from the wolfman's cage, and decides to investigate. The wolf is let loose accidentally by RV, who protests the captivity of the wolf man, but has no idea how violent the wolf man can be. After biting off Reggie's arms, the wolf sets off after a figure behind Darren, who has dropped a bag of clothes and onions-belonging to Sam! Darren learns he is going to smuggle himself away with the circus! Eventually Sam is killed by the wolf man. While standing over Sam's corpse, Mr. Crepsley convinces Darren to drink Sam's blood, therefore "preserving" some of Sam's soul.(less)
