This book was absolutely fantastic. It's for middle grade readers and the tone and vocabulary is perfect - it's not dumbed down but kids still get it. As an adult I was fascinated. I loved getting such a conscise summary of his life but I felt like I know him so much more. So many personal comments and stories were interwoven among his public accomplishments and outings. What a true American hero. It did start tugging at my heartstrings to read about the Civil War and see the effects it ha

"Lincoln: A Photobiography" by Russell Freedman combines photos, letters, portraits, newspaper clippings, and more with text to tell our 16th president's life story. The book discusses Lincoln's personal issues (his battle with depression and his relationship with his wife), his childhood as a farm boy and journey to become a lawyer, and his eventual role as president in the American Civil War until his assassination. Unlike some biographies Freedman does not sugarcoat Lincoln as the

This story is about President Abraham Lincoln. Because he is a President of the United States most of us just know that he is Honest Abe, and that he freed the slaves. What they do not know is that Lincoln is just like everyone else a regular Joe doing what he can to help others. This book really shows the true side of Lincoln.
One of my favorite things was that Lincoln was not very proper. He did not talk proper and he did not dress proper. His wife's family did not approve of them mar More...

Summary:
This is a historical telling of President Abraham Lincoln’s life. It is a great representation of who he was as person, his struggles and his strengths. It is interesting to see who is was before he was a president and his poor lifestyle and little education. He was known to be very laid back in his appearance and speech. He had deep depression and was known to have a higher pitched voice, although he was known as an amazing public speaker. This book is a representation of the ins More...

An overview of the life of Abraham Lincoln, including photographs, letters, and other documents from the life of the United States’ sixteenth President.
This book incorporates a truly outstanding collection of photographs of Lincoln, his family, and his colleagues. Some photos even have commentary from Lincoln himself, as in the one he thinks quite a lot of, but mentions that his wife and others don’t like as much because his hair is too messy!

I just finished Gore Vidal's Lincoln and was looking for something more about him. I have several books on Wilkes Booth, the Surratts and the assassination, but nothing on Lincoln, something obviously need to be remedy. I did, however, have "Lincoln: A Photobiography" which I picked up on sale a few years ago, mainly because of the pictures.

This book is for grades 5 thru 8. It is a phenomenal book to add to a Social Studies unit or to use for personal reading/research purposes. As I was reading the book and viewing the wonderful pictures, I concluded that this is the best book I have ever read about Lincoln as an adult. I am sure that students would share the same sentiment. Lincoln's life and career are covered by Freedman clearly with the support of pictures. Lincoln's story is especially inspiring to students do not have a lot

BIOGRAPHY
We all know Lincoln as our 16th president, famous for abolishing slavery. In this book, readers get to experience Lincoln a little more personally, beginning from boyhood and continuing through his assassination.
This was a well done biography. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and appreciated how the captions reminded readers that cameras at the time were slow so they pictures were posed and stiff. That's especially important for younger reader More...

Abraham Lincoln’s life, from childhood to his death, is explained with facts, stories, and pictures in this book. He grew up in a poor family, always working to help make ends meet. Throughout his life, he read in order to learn. After being hired for several small, hard labor jobs, Lincoln’s friend convinced him he should become a lawyer. After several years of reading up on the subject, he finally became one, and soon after moved onto his political career. Lincoln’s life was full of many heart

Not as many pictures as I thought there would be! Ah well, so much for trying to knock a quick one off the Newbery list. This was a good book though. I'm not much for history and this has a sort of textbook feel to it, but I like that Russell Freedman highlights things in Lincoln's life that the average history book wouldn't include.

Lincoln is presented here as I have never seen him, in both text and photographs. The details about him surprised me; I knew, of course, that he was extremely tall and had had a limited formal education, but I had no idea his voice was high pitched and that he had so much trouble finding a good general during the Civil War and that he was shy. I also loved the fact that though he had a total of a year of schooling he was able to read and study himself for two years and pass his bar exam. The Civ

Great book, amazing pictures. Inspiring, personable, realistic, accessible, and well researched. By the time I had finished reading, the civil war no longer felt remote, removed, but very tangible. I wept because I felt like we had lost someone like my father.
One of the most striking points for me, was toward the end, when I came across a series of photographs of Lincoln during the war and immediately after. He looked so worn down. It occurred to me how bitterly we had used this More...

A Newbery-winner, Freedman's Lincoln: A Photobiography brings Lincoln to life as a living, breathing person who did more than get born in a log cabin, split rails, and free slaves. Lincoln and I share an obsessive love of reading -- I sometimes read while walking the dog; he apparently treated himself to snatches of reading at the end of a row of plowing! And his courtship of Mary Todd had enough drama to spur a historical romance. Even while dealing with the burdens of politics and leading the

I haven’t read the other non-fiction Newbery medalists. But from some comments on these volumes: The Story of Mankind, Invincible Louisa, Daniel Boone – they were often found lacking. My guess is that when Russell Freedman came along the committee was all kinds of giggles and gusto to have such a concise, accurate, and readable biography to add to the Newbery cannon. Lincoln: A Photobiography maintains a formal narrative distance from the reader, yet manages to string out a captivating life,

I liked this story of Lincoln's life. We actually listened to it, but we own the book so we could look through the photos. It seems like the author did a fairly good job of keeping unbiased. Makes me want to learn more. Maybe even listen to the book A. Lincoln that my husband bought a few months back.
The part that handled Lincoln's death was extremely well done. Made me cry. He was one of the truly great leaders of our country. I liked listening to how his political ideas morp More...

I chose to read the Lincoln biography because he was such an influential man in American History. Since on of the children's literature genres is biography/autobiography, I thought that Abraham Lincoln would be as good of a choice as any. This book is very informative and well written. Lincoln was one of the most important president's in history, so I believe that my students should be well informed of such an influential life. I probably wouldn't make my students read this outside of class for

I have a confession: This was much more enjoyable and informative then some of the adult biography's I have read. I have always been a fan of Abraham Lincoln and after reading this I like him even more. This book is filled with lots of great historical facts and explanations. I love that it explains why he looks so serious in his photos because I have honestly always wondered why someone so great could look so grumpy. I plan on having my 8 year old read this book when he gets a little bit old

I really liked this book. Lincoln has always been one of my favorite Presidents and this book only confirmed to me why I like him so much. He was definitely a very interesting person. It was fun to read about his family, how he met his wife, etc. This book was an easy read and it was hard to put down because it was so interesting and fun to read. All the photos included in the book are really good too. I think it's a good book for older children to read to find out more about Lincoln. It's a boo
