I’m usually a little uncertain about reading books that are about marriages collapsing. It is a difficult topic to read about, but at the same time, these books can provide readers with a powerful message about forgiveness and healing. Because of this, I wanted to read Desert Gift. The story sounded intriguing and I have liked Sally John’s writing before.

One of the traits of a really good book, in my opinion, is a book that doesn’t have what I like to call “an adjustment period”. That is a book

Book Two in the "Side Roads" series, "Desert Gift” introduces us to Jillian "Jill" and Jack Galloway from Chicago. Jill has built a career as a relationship expert, using a "formula" she developed through her research and interviews with people. Jill now has a nationally syndicated hit radio talk show "Recipes for Marriage" and has just released her first book "She Said, He Heard." Jack has a success practice as a podiatrist, has been a faithful husband and father, is a wonderful cook and ...more

I enjoy a lot of fiction and while my favorites are romances I do enjoy the stories that take place after the happily ever after as well. With last year's release, Ransomed Dreams, Sally John earned her place on my must read authors list. The continuation of her Side Roads series features yet another couple whose marriage is in crisis. While not as dramatic as the Montgomery's story, Jillian and Jackson Galloway's marriage is falling to pieces too. Jillian, a renowned marriage expert doesn't see ...more

A book about a marriage falling apart didn't appeal to me at the outset. I'm more about romance and happily every after. There is a part of me that also thinks being real is valuable and I wondered just how this author tackled this very important topic. Was it sugar coated? Was everything fixed with a fancy dinner and flowers? Did a prayer make everything all better?

The truth is this book was refreshingly real in many ways. Jillian has been telling everyone how to make sure their marriages are p

Jillian Galloway's life turns upside down when her husband asks for a divorce before she sets off to a tour to promote her new book on communicating in marriage. She's built her whole life around her career and ministry in teaching women how to make their marriages work.

What she learns when she goes home to Sweetwater, in the desert, is that marriage isn't a formula and maybe she had some things wrong.

Sally John did a really good job showing that there is no certain form to making marriage wor

I enjoyed reading this book. Jillian was the quintessential formulaic Christian advisor ~ if you do this, then God, your husband, your friends, your family, will do that. Of course, that's not how it works all the time and it's not right, it's manipulative. Her husband, the partner in her perfect marriage that she has used as a basis for her radio program and her new book, rebells suddenly; and she is forced to deal with issues from her childhood. The characters that she meets when she decides ...more

Jillian is a well known speaker and author on the subject of marriage communication. Jackson is a physician for Huffman Medical Group, he asked his wife Jill for a divorce after 24 years of marriage. He has fallen "out of love". Their son Conner, aged 23 is currently living in Europe. Jill's books reveal much about their marriage and the more she tries to reconcile the more he drags his feet. The memories are fresh in her mind, her thoughts consume her. The question remains, Can she get back ...more

Jill has her own radio show that discusses marriage. She has written a book that gives advice on how to make and keep a strong marriage. She even gives lectures on her marriage strategies. At the very beginning of the book, Jill's husband of almost 25 years tells her that he wants a divorce. A wonderful story written by a christian author that tells the tale of how their marriage got to this point and how it affects all of the people around them. Is every marriage able to be saved? I enjoyed reading about the Galloway's and how they take their marriage to the Lord & ask him for guidance! That being said, I look forward to reading more of Sally John's stories. This is the first book that I ever read by author Sally John. I am pleased to say that I have found another author who writes without compromising her Christian values. There were no sex scenes in this book nor was there any profanity or violence. Sally John makes her characters believable & real. You might ...more

I thought the story was great, the reactions realistic and relatable, and the characters were human and mostly likeable in their own way. It was also very drawn out. There was a lot of "discovery" moments which is probably true to real life, but gets old in fiction. The husband also seemed almost Jeckyl and Hyde sometimes with him caring and feeling bad for leaving his wife, and then angry and spiteful toward her. Overall I thought it was a good book and I enjoyed it. The ending seemed a little ...more

This book caught my attention in the first page- and I couldn't help but wonder what would really happen to Jill as Jack had already asked for a divorce and she was on a high in her career.
It's a good book and the turn of events got me wondering how much a person could take and I was rather pleased that Jill had a good relationship with her Sister, Viv, who did offer her a shoulder to cry on when things got tough.
It's something worth reading especially if you are in a relationship and your partn

Life is drama. That's the main theme I got from this book. No matter how hard we try to maintain relationships, our health, our sanity, that can all be lost when we least expect it.

Sally John created realistic characters and situations which made the story believable and somewhat intriguing. There wasn't enough depth to the conflicts, though, for my liking. I needed more to maintain my interest. Perhaps bringing in a non-family member or two would have added some nice diversity.

It started out good. It caught my attention at the beginning. I got bored real fast. It just moved too slow. I thought there was too much time wasted talking about where Jill was and how she couldn't figure out how to deal with Jack wanting a divorce. I felt like I read the same things over and over again in each chapter.
There is a third book, I am not even going to attempt it.

I started off a little slow with this book and wasnt sure if I was goingto stick with it. I am so glad that I did, I learned things because of the main characters journey. My 2nd book by this author, really enjoyed this more than the first and glad I gave it a chancce. Same as cant judge a book by its cover, dont write off an author after only one book.

This is a story of a couple who after 25 years of marriage talks divorce. The man comes home one day and says he wants out and totally floors the woman. This is about real life and what happens when we don't give God the control of our lives and try to handle everything ourselves. This is a story about growth and family and God.

Very good story and some thought-provoking situations. What does a woman do, who has built her career on giving Biblical marital advice, when her husband says he wants a divorce? I never was sure what the outcome would be and there are some twists and turns in the story. My first book by Sally John--been wanting to read one for some time. I will definitely look for another.

This book was so good. Made me really think about life, how often we wear mask and forget who we really are. This book kept my attention through out the book and when the book came to a end. I must say I wept. And I felt good. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. Love and forgiveness were recurring theme's in this book. It is a must read.

It was a good read. Had some twists and turns. I would recommend it for sure. The character felt she had all the pat Christian answers, but realizes that she does not. So good book for those struggling with legalism issues. I liked the characters, and it had a nice ending.

I thought that this book had good intentions, but they seemed to get muddled. I was unsatisfied by the ending--instead of resolving their issues in a satisfactory way, I was still left feeling unsure about the main characaters' future happiness. (Grade: "C+".)

Good message

Good messages in a good story line. I'm not big on Christian novels but this one got its message across without alienating.
