This is a decent chapter book mystery with puzzles for the early elementary crowd. The story and the puzzles didn't mesh together as well as they did in, say, Dan Gutman's hands, but for the young puzzle enthusiast this won't matter too much.

The story is kind of boring, but kids will likely enjoy trying to decipher the puzzles. However, one big complaint is that one of the puzzles is explained in the text before you turn the page and get to the actual picture puzzle.

You would think that living above the Pizzeria their parents owned would make Pete and Penny dislike or get tired of pizza, but it never did. One day they are left to help their uncle manage the business while their parents go out of town. Then the most horrible thing happens, the families secret sauce recipe disappears. I love the elements of mystery that carry the story along. I think that beginning readers will really enjoy this book.

Read to my 6 and 5 year old boys.

Story rating- 2.5 stars

Puzzle rating- 2 stars. The boys were excited to do the puzzles. The puzzles were not kid friendly. (Example: There was a picture of a girl wearing a bonnet, the kids were supposed to guess that the word was a Scottish term Lass. That was so far fetched.)

This fun book includes logic puzzles to be solved in every chapter. Some are easier than others, but the book is geared toward younger elementary students. Cute story and characters, but they really are just an interesting way to introduce the different brain games. Still, younger readers will enjoy these.

If you have a first to third grader who likes to solve puzzles this would be a fun book for them. Penny and Pete are siblings. Pete loves puzzles. Parents go out of town, Uncle Gio is taking care of them, kids lose the secret sauce recipe and fun ensues as they attempt to find the secret ingredient.

This book is awesome! I love that there are puzzles intertwined with the mystery story! Perfect for 6-8 year olds in particular! :)
Shannon
Cute book with puzzles easy enough for my early-elementary-school-aged kids to figure out
