Joyce Shaughnessy wrote an amazing story. A Healing Place literally takes the reader on a journey to experience Black Sunday and the horrible dust storms that wiped out so many people, destroying farms, livestock, anything in it's path. This is the first historical fiction I've ever read since high school, which was a long time ago lol. Now I know what I've been missing.

I commend Joyce Shaughnessy for writing a historically accurate fictional account of a young Oklahoma family forced to abandon their farm during the Great Depression to search for and find a better place where they could live with dignity and self-respect. By narrating the parents’ son-in-law’s survival of the Bataan Death March and subsequent prison camp experiences, A Healing Place also provides worthwhile information about the war in the Philippines during the second world war.

“A Healing Place” by Joyce Shaughnessy is a novel about the Miller family during the Great Depression. They own a farm in Oklahoma, which they subsequently lose to the bank and are forced off of their property. While traveling, looking for work, and living in their truck they come across hardships such as they have never experienced before. The narration of the novel switches between the Miller family and their new son-in-law Jed. He survives the horrors of the Bataan Death March and his time as...more
The author does such a great job with attention to details during the period of The Great Depression and the Dust storms that you feel like you are there right along with The Miller family and their friends. No words are wasted to make these times pretty. Families are enduring hardships that few of us will ever know, and God is their only real refuge. Amos and Molly Miller and their three daughters, Addie, Sarah, and Hannah, each have their own personalities and their own ways. Their life togeth...more

This is the story of a family that takes place during the dust bowl, great depression, and World War II. It begins in Oklahoma during the dust bowl. The family is evicted from their farm after failing to pay a $130 loan. They decide to travel to California but hear horror stories on the road about treatment of the migrant farm workers so they decide to turn around and settle in Texon, Texas instead. Texon becomes "a healing place" for their f...more

This book is so marvelous. I found it hard to put down and it made me want to read more. The book starts off very dramatically, showing the state of the US during the Great Depression. I never thought that it was that bad there because I had no idea how depressing that period was. Then what I liked about it the most is how the family triumphed throughout all the obstacles in their lives and found their own healing place. It is a very beautiful and uplifting novel and it will make you believe in...more
Have you ever thought what would you do if everything you have right now is taken away from you? What will be your next step? What are the things you will consider and how will you handle the challenges you will face? If not, then you need to read Joyce Shaughnessy’s book ‘A Healing Place’.

A Healing Place is a moving look at two critical decades from the eyes of the hardest hit Americans. The grittiness of the Dust Bowl rolling through Oklahoma left the feeling of dirt in my mouth. They struggled to keep the family clean and fed while dreading a visit from the bank calling in their loan. The three girls were forced to stay inside because the elements were deadly. And when they did leave the question became where do we go next. As the Miller's journey West and then East they meet a...more

Historical fiction isn't one of my favorite genres to read, but I find some time periods quite interesting including the two that are covered in this book: the Great Depression, and World War 2. The suffering and perseverence of the two families that are highlighted in this book will have you laughing with them in the good times and crying with them in the hard times. It also makes whatever problems the reader is having seem so small and...more

Wow!! I was totally blown away. I couldn't put it down. What a story! I don't know what else to say. It was FANTASTIC. My father survived WWII, and he never talked about it until his unit started to have reunions in the early 1990s. I am so in awe of the men and women of that generation; and your book has reinforced that respect. I can't wait to read "Blessed Are the Merciful". You are now one of my "favorite" authors. I wish my Dad was still alive to read this book. It would have made him proud...more
This book was sent to me by the author to read. Being Veteran's Day I wanted to finish the book. The Miller family consisting of Amos, Molly and their three daughters face many trails during the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression and World War II. The events that took place brought the family closer together, Their strength, love, courage was amazing. Ms. Shaughnessy has once again brought the reader into her story, reliving life of the 1930,s and 1940's. Thank you for giving me the opportunity t...more
