Heather Brewer successful series of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod was awesome. Now with her new book series The Slayer Chronicles it starts with the character from Vladimir Tod, Joss. This is about how Joss joined the slayer society and how his sister died. Challenges of life can be painful. It worths having challenges because it teaches you life lessons and confidence in yourself. After his sister was killed by a vampire, he trains to be a slayer. He is under training under his uncle, Abraham...more

I reviewed this book about a reluctant teenage vampire for Deseret Connect, and I think that a certain audience will really, really love it (teenagers and certain YA vampire enthusiasts). For me, I am happy that I liked it--it ended on two satisfying twists. Prose was pretty boring, honestly, and Joss's thoughts are full of cliches like "he would never know how much I needed mentoring" (not an actual quote). I'll link my full review later. Some things I wanted to mention but were to persnickety...more

Joss Macmillan (yes, THAT Joss Macmillan) has a tragic past. He once had a little sister, Cecile, who was his reason for living, his only friend. When Joss was ten, Cecile died at the hands of a vampire. Distraught and seeking revenge, Joss began training as a vampire slayer. Now, three years later, Joss prepares to put his skills into action.

If you like action, you will go wild for Joss’ vampire slayer training. There are rituals, explosives, hand-to-hand combat, and agonizing fight scenes. Sin...more

I have read the Vladimir Todd series and I have always been on Vlad's side. GO VAMPIRES GO! But.. I have to admit, this book has changed my perspective on Joss completely. This book was really amazing. Not only has it brought up Joss's past, but it has started to bring up the part where Joss is introduced in the Vladimir Todd series. I like how the author adds in their own style and twists to the original story line. At first Abraham seems to come off as a bad uncle who has it out for Joss and i...more

First kill by Heather Brewer is the gruesome story of a young boy, Joss McMillan, who is pushed into a new reality when he witnesses his baby sister’s cruel death at the hands of a bloody vampire. I know what you’re thinking, oh god not another Twilight knock off, well stop right there! This book is actually from the contrasting perspective of a vampire slayer. Bewer switches things up by enlightening us readers to a slayer’s world of vivid violence-- I personally loved this alternative take. T...more

Heather Brewer built a solid reputation for herself with her first series, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, about a young man who attempts to get through high school as a good and conscientious vampire despite an ominous prophecy. The Slayer Chronicles is a unique companion series that offers the perspective of the vampire slayers, one in particular, Joss MacMillan. From friend to mortal enemy the series promises to deliver a thrilling, action-packed intersection of the lives of Vladimir Tod and...more

Soon after the release of this spin-off series, an envelope arrived on my doorstep. Inside was a shiny new copy, signed, just dying to be read. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that it took me this long to get to it. On the other hand, it was so worth the wait.

If you are familiar with the Chronicles of Vladimir Todd, you probably know Joss. Joss is Henry's cousin and he is a slayer. We got to see Vlad's side of the story, be an audience to the inner workings of vampire society. Now we get to see...more

First, I read all 5 of the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod and now, I've just completed the first book in the spin off series. The Slayer Chronicles is from Vlad's best friend's cousin's perspective. I completely suggest reading the Vlad Tod series first and then reading this book; TSC First Kill. After reading all 5 of the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod novels, what you will find in The Slayer Chronicles: First Kill is an amazing piece of literature that manages to bring in some new charac...more

I have discovered something, one should re-read the series before one reads the spin-offs. Maybe that's just the case for books that don't really stick with you, but I found myself stumbling across a few familiar names and not remembering their purpose.

Like most three star ratings, I neither hated this book nor loved it. It was an enjoyable read, parts of the training fascinated me. However I have no idea what this was to add to the overall series. I'm guessing that we're supposed to sympathize...more

1) Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

2) Genre: Young Adult / Paranormal

3) Synopsis: Joss Macmillan experiences something horrible and with that his life changes. With that change he gets on the path to become a Slayer. The only question is if he has the stuff to become a Slayer.

4) Feelings: This is a partner book to the Vladimir Tod series. I really liked the Vladimir Tod series but was never the biggest fan of Joss Macmillan. So I fought picking this book up for a while. I am glad I did. I liked this bo...more

I'm was glad when I found out Joss was going to have his own series. His character was interesting in then Chronicles of Vlad and he seemed so intense and driven. I like that now we can get a see were he came from and how he got that way. I would definitely suggest to anyone to read the chroniclers of Vlad before the Slayer Chronicles it might help to understand some things and characters. If not before at least at some point would work ca...more

I should probably start by saying that I hated the character of Joss McMillan in the Vlad Tod series. Therefore, I really expected to hate this before I started it. Well, I still hate Joss, but I didn’t hate the book. Unfortunately, I didn’t fall in love with it either, as I did with Eighth Grade Bites.

The story was interesting and well written. Author Heather Brewer continues her uncanny knack for fully understanding and flawlessly translating teen boy angst to the printed page. Joss, our hero,...more

I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give this review.

I really enjoyed the Vlad series, so I naturally wanted to pick this spin-off up. Ms. Brewer's writing sucked me in from the first page, but this story seemed to be lacking some of the "sparkle" the Vlad series had. (Sorry, Vlad, I know that you think "real" vampires don't sparkle, but I think the writing about them should.)

It took me most of the book to figure out what was missing, and for me it was Vlad's sarcastic attitude and se...more

First in a new series of five novels by Heather Brewer, author of the Vladimir Todd series. Joss is only 10 years old when he witnesses the death of his 6-year-old sister at the hands of a vampire. This is his first brush with such creatures. His Uncle Abraham is more than aware of them as a member of the secret Slayer Society, charged with protecting the unsuspecting from these vicious blood suckers. At Cecile's funeral, Joss's uncle comforts him with a promise that when he turns 18, he too wil...more

My review once again disappeared into the wherever that things go when you click to save and poof!
So you will have to take my word for it that I wrote a review of this book that would win the equivalent of the Academy Award for literary criticism. It was astoundingly astute and amazingly…… okay, it was a plain old review and I’ll try to recreate it.
This book has both too much and too little. There is too much internal dialogue and too little actual character development. You’d think with the nea...more

I saw the Chronicles of Vladimir Todd in a bookstore, and planned to get one from the library. Instead, I accidentally got this series, which focuses on a Slayer instead of a vampire.
At thirteen, Joss is in training to be a slayer. He saw a vampire kill his little sister three years before, and her death haunts him--that and the fact that no one but his uncle believes him. He must face harsh training to eradicate the monsters that took his sister.
And the training is where this book lost me. Unl...more

This book completely pummeled the idea of sparkly vampires. ‘First Kill’ was written for real vampire fans, and those who are not vampires fans as well.
Heather Brewer put her audience into the world of a young boy who despises blood suckers. After he is told of his family’s secret heritage of the Slayer Society, he begins his vampire slayer training as their new recruit. Throughout his brutal education of being a slayer, we learn his reasoning for his fuel.
‘First Kill’ is full of surprises, su...more

Well, I have NOT read the Vladimir Todd books, but they certainly were a big hit in the Maxson Library. These books were devoured by the Maxson female students. I decided to read this book, because it is about vampire slayers, and I had had enough of vampires. This book is very violent and a bit gruesome, so I'm sure it will prove to be popular.
The main character, a boy named Joss, has witnessed his sister's horrible death by a vampire. Unknown to Joss, his uncle is a Slayer, and has recruited...more

Have you ever lost someone close to you? Have you ever watched someone die and you could do nothing about it? Young Joss learns very quickly that vampires are very much real. Some might just be your next door neighbor, or the mail man or even that girls scout selling cookies. Joss spends the summer training for the fight of his life. This book is taking place before the first Vladimir Tod book. Readers will get the best experience if they read Vladimir Tod and Slayer Chronicles in order starting...more

As many of you know I love Heather Brewer. She is one of my favorite authors and when it was announced that there was going to be a spinoff series of The Vlad Tod Series I jumped for joy. Though I was never on the Team Joss train I was interested in learning about how Joss became a hunter. Heather wrote Joss’s training in such detail that everything that Joss felt you felt as well. I fell for all the red herrings like Joss did. Not once did I guess right . After reading First Kill I have more l...more

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod rocked, so I was super excited when this parallel series started. However, I was a little disappointed by this book. It's definitely well-written and well-paced, and I enjoyed it, but I just didn't love it. I don't know if it's because the whole book is about training a teenager to be a murderer, or if I sympathized too much with the vampires already because of the previous series, or if the book lacked some of the lightheartedness of Vlad's books, or if my expecta...more

Heather Brewer was not your typical teen growing up. She wore black, danced under full moons and devoured every book in sight.
She hasn’t changed much.

Today, Heather can be found writing in her funky, black Happy Bunny jammie pants, dancing under the full moon, devouring every book in sight, and attending Renaissance Festivals in costume (and in character).

When Heather's not writing, dressing up,...more
