Meh. Not appalling, but it's not going to linger in my mind forever either. I don't normally go for the "I don't want to marry HIM! I'm going to run away!" plots because they tend to be heavy on the flouncing and light on the common sense. This one was better than most in that regard. I wouldn't call Amelie Silverdale a rocket scientist, but I wouldn't consider one of the dread feisty heroines either. Basically she comes off as a scared kid trying to get away from betrothal to an eeeevil noblema ...more
Pretty good! It was obvious it was a debut story because of the many common themes in the novel found in early romantic fiction..

- girl meets boy and they love-hate each other,
- horrible older man chases girl and is responsible for boy's earlier but undeserved downfall,
- boy and girl end up on the run from evil fellow and no one believes the man is bad except for the boy and girl,
- the boy and girl realize they are in love and, of course, don't let the other know because of pride or other la

This is a typical Harlequin Historical romance. It was a quick read and was a pleasant diversion. It had the expected characters: the naive but spirited young woman of the upper class, disapproving family members, a dashing but somewhat disreputable love interest, the evil meany bent on dastardly doings and the expected happy ending.

It is good for what it is. It isn't serious literature but it is entertaining.

I recommend this book.

I was born into an army family and most of my childhood was spent moving from school to school, including periods of living in Egypt and Germany. Some schools I loved and some I hated, so it wasn't too surprising that I left before completing my examinations.

I became a secretary but realised almost immediately that the role of handmaiden simply wasn't for me. Escape beckoned when I landed a job wi
