This was one of those novels that the pre-release hype was so great that as a reader, I was not sure what to expect but Night Fall with a few small exceptions lived up to the media hubbub. The novel starts with a flashback scene that takes us to the Atlantic coast on the fateful night of the TWA flight 800 crash. On the beach, two "consenting adults" are enjoying their night out and for posterity sake filmed the evening. On this tape, the "accident" and a strange shooting lig...more

I love Nelson Demille books. I love conspiracy theories. I absolutely can not stand it when there isn't an ending and nothing gets solved.

I rated this a 3 because it was highly entertaining. But as I was nearing the end I thought that there was a good chance we wouldn't get any answers...and we didn't. Though it isn't like this book is a history book that has all the details. I know it's a piece of fiction but, come on, finish the da*n story. I"m frustrated, but I...more

I really liked this one! Continuing with the character of John Corey, the ATTF, FBI and CIA. I both read this and listend to it on tape with Kev on a long trip(it's great on tape, the narrator is excellent). This book is about an investigation in to TWA flight 800 crashing. Was the flight shot down by a missle fired from the water in an act of terrorism that was covered up by the government? The book is shocking and chilling, and leaves you wondering if it could be true.

recommends it for: Fans of conspiracy, cop, mystery stories...
The next episode in the life of John Corey, ex-NYPD, current ATTF agent. This time around, he is asked by his wife to 'look into' the TWA explosion off the coast of Long Island, unofficially of course, five years after it happened. The rumor is there was a couple on the beach that night, with a camera... After being told by superiors not to investigate any further, this arrogant and sometimes obnoxious but always funny alpha-male revisits the scene and interviews witnesses. He doesn't plan on le...more

the book is about 2 individuals commiting adultery and video taping their actions while a life changing event occurs in the background. An airplane explodes and ppl say its because a missle was directed at it. The tape has captured the event and is the only evidence to support the fact that the country is being targeted. The government claims that it was an accident but the witnesses all disagree. They are unsatisfied and on the 5th anniversary, a married couple both working for the governement ...more

Pretty good read for this not so fiction, fiction book. I live in NY and remember the news flash that came on the TV just after the crash. I still think about it every time I pass East Moriches on the Long Island Expressway. Needless to say, when I saw the book I grabbed it immediately. It’s is based on real events of this crash and personally I think it’s got more truth then fiction. Although the real eyewitness accounts of events that led to the crash never matched the final conclusion fro...more

I really like DeMille's writing. I mean this is NOT great literature - but my god! It is so entertaining! The main character, John Corey, ex-NYPD detective and current member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is just like every character Humphrey Bogart ever played. You should hate him - but he is so cool and smart and witty you have to love him.

I had planned to write that you can count on DeMille to tie up EVERY SINGLE loose end ---- but that (spoiler alert) was before I got to the...more

The Mistah

Another fun journey for Det. John Corey, this one an investigation into the crash of TWA 800 over ten years ago. The crash itself was pretty controversial since so many witnesses saw what looked like a missile take down the plane, including a good friend of mine who was finished surfing for the day when he saw the infamous "streak of light." It certainly added to my enjoyment of the book, though Corey is still a great character. My buddy told us all about the crash the next morning, be...more

Ick. I totally didn't get into this book at all. I'm not even sure why I had it on my list to read. It was about this retired-cop-FBI agent who reopened a plane crash case and how he had to get around all these barriers (not-dead dead guys, missing witnesses etc, assisgment in Yemen) to solve a national tragedy that was covered up by the goverment. SOunded interesting I guess but this was definatley a story written with a male perspective in mind. The fact that this John Corey person was a man's...more

I'm catching up one some books that I read just before I joined Good Reads. This has the same character as Wild Fire... with the same personality as the one Up Country. The plot takes a while to get going and there is a lot of technical information discussion (like in Michael Crighton books) but I like that stuff. An NYPD cop and his FBI wife attempt to solve the (true story) mystery of a plane crash. What they find sweeps them into a full-blown national conspiracy. Once again... beware the lan...more

Likely one of his best...and worst...

If you like smart ass dialogue, this is some of the best...it's extremely funny at times. I like books like that.

If you like books with unresolved endings, then you'll like this book. I don't like books like that.

All the way until about the last 10 pages, I thought this was a great book. I'll leave it at that.

A lot of plot twists in the middle with some great "why didn't I think of that" moments. The end, the final twist is one GIAN...more

This book was almost as good as his others but had a bit of gut-clenching due to the subject matter (TWA 800). The hero is as witty and annoying as ever. I love Nelson DeMille's books but feel that he, like some other big novelists, have had a rough go of it post-September 11th. They don't seem to be as willing to go where they did in terms of plot. I'm still formulating more put-together thoughts on this, but check out "The Lion's Game" for the kind of cuckoo genius I'm talking about.

TWA 800 falls from the sky and over 200 witnesses claim they saw a light of a missile type object come off the water and head toward the plane before it crashed. This part is true and the novel examines what happened implying a big time cover-up between the CIA and the FBI, but one agent decides to look into the accident on his own even though he has been warned to stay clear. A good story that has an unexpected ending that kind of ticked me off, but the story kept my interest.

This book was FABULOUS! At first I was a little frustated with all the acronyms for the groups involved, and wanted to get to the rest of the story. Based on actual events of the flight TWA 800 crash in 1997, which are VERY accurate, is a fictional story of a coverup and getting the truth after 5 years. The characters are real, the dialogue truthful and lively. Don't read it while taking a vacation which involves an airplane, but do read it!

So pissed. At about 100 pages left in this book, I knew that Demille had written himself into a corner. A better writer would have given up, even an "airport novelist" like Demille should have known that his ending was becoming contrived, easy and ludicrous. I liked following a detective, even one as stilted and mind-fucked sometimes as John Corey, but the ending cuts the penis off of this book and makes me never want to trust Demille again.

At first I wasn't sure if I liked DeMille's writing style. I wasn't sure if that was just his style or it was the character that was telling it. I got past that and the story was quite interesting. It takes a true event that devastated so many in the country and tried to make some sense out of it. By the time I was finished the book I realized that I did enjoy it. For all those that like a book that makes you go, "Hmmmm" give it a try.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I was all ready to give it 3 stars til I got to the very end! Normally I don't complain about so-so endings if the story is good, but this ending was disappointing enough to sort of ruin the whole story!
However, I very much like the John Corey character and his sort of snotty, sneaky sense of humor, and I will definitely try another of these books and hope the end is better.

An excellent thriller based on the the explosion of TWA Flight 800 over Long Island Sound in 1995. DeMille has done his research and put the pieces together with an appealing NYPD detective working for a counter-terrorism team. The dark humor takes me back to my New York roots. DeMille ties up the loose ends as the story races to its appointment in Samarra. Great escape reading.
