Edit on 14th March 2011: On second thoughts, I'm bumping this from 8/10 to 9/10. Thinking about this book, I did truly enjoy it and can only really recall a couple of tiny, minor faults about it.

When four young women head off to the ghost-town of Hopesfall, Colorado to turn it into a bustling, prosperous saw-mill, they end up with far more than they bargained for. While Cora plans to wed her fiancee, she knows it's not safe for her friends to be alone in a town full of men. Thus Evie, Lacey a...more

This book had quite an intriguing premise -- four women decide to place an ad for husbands in order to revive a dead mining town and turn it into a sawmill town. Their good intentions did not account for the reality of the kind of men who would be showing up for such a curious promise, and the likelihood of their being able to maintain control of a town full of men. I also found it a bit ironic that the book is marketed as a Christian fiction book, though the four women have made themselves head...more

I picked up this book because my aunt asked me to give it a try. She wanted someone to talk to about the books she had been reading and I'm happy I took her suggestion. She has been reading many historical romances and generally this is not my genre but I've been lured in and hooked.

Evie and the rest of the girls are fun to read about. I wasn't so sure at first what to expect. But instantly I fell in love with Lyman's, Ms. Higgins, and the Thompson sisters. When Jake first walked into the diner...more

This was the first book by this author that I have had the chance to read. I am so glad that I did too. This book was wonderfully written.

Hopes Falls is a dying town. After the collapse of the mine, the town basically evaporated. At least until Lacey hatches a plan to attempt to revitalize the area. Instead of focusing on mining, she felt their town would be better off focusing on lumber.

However, after the mine collapse, there weren’t any men to do the work. So Lacey convinces Evie and Naomi to...more

Rugged & Relentless is the first book in the Husbands For Hire series by Kelly Eileen Hake.

I'm always on the hunt for new Christian Historical Fiction authors I enjoy, but because I do not care to be preached to, it is often hard to find books in this genre that I truly love. Rugged and Relentless is the first book I have read by Kelly Eileen Hake and it most definitely will not be my last! It's been a LONG time since I've discovered a "new-to-me" Christian Fiction author who made me want to immediately go and buy more of their books. Guess it's a good thing I primarily read eBooks th...more

I like reading a book that seems like the main characters have got all their 'ducks in a row' only to find out that their are sooo many outside possibilities. Knowing that I'm not the only one that happens to helps me get through my own dilemmas at times and helps me laugh.

The four women in this book are forward thinkers for the 1800s that they live in and I like people who think outside of the box. Evie owns a diner and has her rules, like "Hat's off while you eat--house rules."

I love Jake's re...more

RATING: 4.5)RUGGED & RELENTLESS by Kelly Eileen Hake is an exciting inspirational historical romance set in Hope Falls, Colorado in 1887. This is Book #1 in the "Husbands for Hire" series. This was a good book but it took me forever to read it. It takes you a while to figure out which woman the book is about because it talks about all of them. Evelyn is only one of three women who advertised for a husband in the paper for Hope Falls (you will have to read the darn thing to get it). Then it switches and talks about Jacob Granger wanted to find the man responsible for killing his brother and then calling him a cheat. Jacob comes to Hope Falls not looking for a wife but after this pe...more

This is the kind of book that makes a great movie! The characters where well developed and the plot was solid. The book opens with Cora Thompson grieving the death of her fiancé. Evie is her older sister who is a chef at a local café. Lacey is Cora’s fiancé’s sister and Naomi is Lacey’s close friend. With Cora’s fiancé dead they are out a great deal of money because he was out in Colorado getting a mining company going. Lacey comes up with a new plan head to the now ghost town and get a logging...more

I found this to be a really fun book. The characters are fun, the plot is interesting, but not so overly involved to keep it from being a relaxing read. The author kept much of the descriptions to what the characters where thinking and feeling instead of what they were seeing, so this was a big plus for me as well, and kept the book moving along.

Though this is Christian fiction, there weren't any religious views shared. This, too, was a plus for me. Good clean book with characters that are moral...more

Oh dear. I’m not sure what to write about this one, so I’ll keep it short. I thought it was okay; I liked the idea for the story more than the actual story. I guess my biggest complaint was that there was a lot of rehashing throughout the story, and some conversations and scenes were too long. The girls drove me nuts, and I can see why they drove all the men nuts as well. For girls who are supposed to be really savvy they sure didn’t act like it at times. I just had a hard time caring about a...more

An enjoyable read- 4 strong women searching for their way in the world. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. They follow a brother and fiancee to a mining town and try to rebuild it. They put an ad in the paper for husbands and get more than they bargained for.
Bree
Different type of story two sisters and her friends decide to start a lumber mill. Problem is 4 single females aren't safe in the Wild West. They as need investors in their adventure. There answer to find husbands by putting in an ad in the paper.
Kimberly
The story started out kind of slow, but I trudged on for a few more chapters and pretty soon I was hooked. Although it was a little predictable of who was going to end up together in the end, I still enjoyed the path it took to get them there.
Tori
It was ok. I liked the idea of the book but it really lacked in action. It was repetitive and wordy. And there were so many points of view that it made it hard to follow at times. Jake is the main reason I continued reading.

The story line - a play on mail order brides- was good. Unfortunately, the authors writing style, in my opinion, took away from the book. The use of unnecessary words - 20 words when 5 would have sufficed - as well as what appeared to be a need to impress with the use of big words such as remonstrance. I was not impressed. I was annoyed. Give my a well written book. Not a bunch of unnecessary words.

There was also so many players - the 4 women, 18+ men, Jake, etc. - and view points, that it was...more

Another good book! I love the unusual storyline, as well as the different female characters being such great friends. I can't wait to continue this series.

Good, but not overly so. I probably won't read the rest of the series, but this one held my interest for most of it. Sadly, at the end the heroine's character seems to slip some. I know, it's supposed to be character development, but it seemed like she developed more than him.

I did end up enjoying this book there were parts where I wanted to smack my forehead but I can't wait to see who the other girls chose as their husbands.

This book was funny through out most parts. The characters were amusing and likable. For everything, I would have given this book a four if not for the fact that the characters were often re-discussing things that I already knew. There were also arguments that lasted through out multiple chapters, which bothered me.

Still, I loved Jake and Evie and their interactions. I will probably read the next books to find out who the other girls marry. Plus those should (hopefully) have everyone on...more

Thanks to NetGalley first for having such a great selection of books. I wasn't sure this story was going to go. I don't read too many western mysteries. I have to say I found Rugged & Relentless very entertaining. The characters are all well done. The funniest part of the book, when the ladies placed an ad looking for husbands and they got more then they bargained for. Eveie is one of my favorite characters. All the women draw you in and you love them all. Jake comes along and tries to prote...more
