Although he keeps company with a vampire and a were, human Shaman Caleb O'Flare can definitely hold his own. But neither his psychic ability nor his healing powers can help his sexy-as-hell teammate, Wraith-a ghost with no memory of her human existence, who cannot experience touch without pain. Paranormal Haven
The Para Ops team has been assigned to infiltrate the feline shifter community to find the person or persons responsible for the sudden surge of rapes of female felines.
With her history with felines Wraith didn't like this assignment as it is, but the fact that she can no longer deny the feelings she has for Caleb is what sent her fleeing the team.
Caleb has his own bad history with the felines he has to deal with but first he must retrieve Wraith and convince her he loves her and doesn't not wa...more

In Virna DePaul’s Para-Ops world wraiths are an enigma. They are the walking dead with no memory of who they were before transitioning into a wraith. The author fully develops these beings giving significant insight into their etiology, and in particular the tragic past of Wraith, the novel’s angry, emotionally volatile heroine who named herself for her race. Even among Otherworld races wraiths are unusual, they have a blue tinged hue to their skin, white hair and their eyes are opaque. They hav...more

I like this one alot but for some reason am having a really hard time reviewing it...

Great tension building between the leads and it is lucky for Wraith that Caleb is persistent and perceptive both, I thought that DePaul pulled the promising world building together and that the romance worked much better than the one in the first book, also her ensemble is really 'gel'ing.

The next book? Chosen by Sin will be Dex's book, yay!

There's a free Wraith prequel eshort which can be downloaded from DePaul...more

My Review:
This book was much more romance based than the first book. While I loved that in the aspect that this is a gorgeous romance, I really missed the full team aspect of the first book. In fact, Knox & Felicia hardly even make an appearance in this book and the overall feel of the book suffered because of that, in my opinion.

What did work for this book, though, was the incredible romance between Wraith & Caleb...wow, it was sizzling!!

As a wraith, Wraith cannot be touched without p...more

Paranormal Romance – Oct. 4th, 2011
5 stars

This author has made a new fan! Not only does she create a vivid landscape of several paranormal beings to fascinate the most jaded reader, but she had developed fully fleshed characters. Normally I find secondary characters dilute the story, but this book I enjoyed them all so much I can’t wait for their stories.

Caleb is a healer that was recruited to work on the special FBI, Para-Ops teams. He and his teammates are assigne...more

I loved the tension that Wraith and Caleb brought to Chosen by Blood. Readers could easily see the chemistry and connection between these two characters. I was very eager to see how their book would flesh out. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Wraith’s character is heartbreaking on so many levels. She’s dead, she has no memory of who she was when she was living, touch pains her, but all of her other sensations are severely lacking. Then the icing on that cake ALL wraiths die again between...more

This was the book that I'd hoped that the first book would be (which it wasn't and massively failed for me). So I think that reading this right after that one, made me like this book so much more.

I really enjoyed Wraith and Caleb's relationship and felt that they were on equal grounds. While both were recovering from bad pasts, they were able to find a future together, which for Wraith meant a ticking clock. Their back and forth, hot and cold, made sense to me as Wraith had had such a traumatic...more

Wraith was woke up 10 years ago, dead. With no memories of her life before she woke up and every touch causing her pain she joins the Para Ops team in exchange for help searching for her past. But her time is running out, all wraiths die in their 11th year and she still has no idea who she is. She doesn't want Caleb O'Flare to get too close, he reaches past the ever present pain and offers her pleasure making her long for something other then the peace of finally being able to die.

I was looking...more

This second in DePaul's Para-Ops series features Otherborns - weres, vamps, dharmires, felines, shapeshifters, mages and wraiths; a shaman; a special FBI mixed species team; a prophecy; a Quorum of humans who want to "strip [the Otherborn] of their civil rights"; a goddess who wants to wipe all species from the earth to start over again and a very unlikely romance. She adds some inventive differences to the mythos for several of her paranormal characters.

This was a new author and new series for...more

Wraith is a ghost. She’s been “alive” for 10 years, and by the time she reaches year 11, she’ll be dead. At the start of the book she has no reason to really care about anything anymore, she has nothing to stay in existence for, she pushes people away who try to get close and she’s tried to kill herself many times – but deep down I think she’s scared. No wraith before her has made it past their 11th year, and while she’s scared of being in her last year,...more

I picked up this book not realizing it was the second in this series, I was planning on getting the first book and reading them in order but I ran out of books to read and this one sounded interesting. I'm not quite sure how much of the first book got ruined by not reading them in order but I'm not sure I care. I loved the characters and the story line, this isn't the most original plot but the characters are. The story and what involves Wraith I think is pretty original but the rest of the supe...more

Caleb may be one of the human members of the Para-Ops teams, but that doesn't mean he isn't without his own set of powerful skills. His psychic and healing powers are unparalleled, but none of that can help him where it matters most to his heart. He'd give anything to help Wraith, a "living" ghost who only experiences pain with touch. No wraith has lived past ten years, and her time is quickly coming up. Once this would have been a blessing to finally have relief from the constant pain, even if...more

Holy crap!

This author is brave, her heroine is a dead, hateful ghost who can't remember who she was and only has a small amount of time left on Earth.

Then we have lovely Caleb who isn't as messed up as Wraith, but still needs her with such an intensity.

This book was a lot harder to read than the first one, DePaul got harder, more violent, and Wraith's past? Made me cry. The thing is though that Wraith was more real than Felicia because of how deep DePaul went into her character. The plot was mos...more

Chosen by Fate, Para-ops #2, by Virna DePaul
Grade: B+

“He made her want things. Silly things. Things that could never be hers. A little house with a vegetable garden in the back. Nights cuddled up close to a fire drinking wine and playing strip poker.”

We are introduced to Wraith and Caleb O’Flare in Chosen by Blood, the first book in Virna DePaul’s Para-ops series, and like most people I immediately fell in love with them both and couldn’t wait for this book to come out. Wraith has been dead for...more

This book was quite different in pacing to the first in the series and it focuses a lot more on the romance.

Considering that all she can feel is pain when someone touches her, Wraith relationship with Caleb was fraught with issues from the start. Wraith is also struggling with the fact that she has reached her 10 years as a wraith which brings along its own worries. Still the romance/relationship develops nicely and does not always go smoothly.

I was surprised at how the background stories were...more

I really wanted to like this book, and am a big fan of PNR, but it just fell flat for me. In all fairness to the author, I didn't read the first book in this series, although my issues with this one (#2) didn't stem from confusion about the plot or world-building; I was just bored for most of the book. Serum antidote, some crimes going on, people blowing up...yadda yadda.
Also, I couldn't figure out why Caleb had such a thing for Wraith. She was nothing but nasty to him most of the time. I kept w...more

Wraith has a secret. She was about to die. It was a closely guarded secret that no wraith had ever lived until it's 11th birthday and her 10th had already passed. Her time was running out. There was only a few things that she wanted before she died. She wanted to know who she was and Caleb O'Flare.

Caleb O'Flare had joined the Para-Op's team in order to clear his name. It was thought that he was responsible for killing his friend and he was bound and determined to find out who was really behind i...more

Wow....Wraith's story really surprised me.

Wraith is just that - a supernatural species - always female - with no knowledge of who they were, or how they came to be. She is the oldest known wraith, and her number is coming up. Caleb is full-human Native-American/Irish shaman. They are both part of the Para-Ops team that was drafted to (literally) save the world. They have the hots for each other, but Wraith is determined lot to form any attachments due to a limitation specific to wraiths.

The task...more

Rated 4.5 on the blog.

Virna DePaul delivers another fabulous story complete with intricate plot line, unique and dynamic characters, and action with an air of suspense that keeps you highly engaged!

The Para-Ops team is composed of six primary team members -- and one director, pulled together for their talents. In book one, the spotlight fell on a human hostage negotiator and a dharmire, half-human, half-vampire clan leader. In book two, the spotlight shifts to concentrate on the relationship bet...more

This had been coming for a long time now, but especially since they'd returned from North Korea. Their mission had affected all of them, of course, but Wraith had come back different. Still prickly, but less mouthy. Less willing to react or to interact. Less....well, less Wraith. It was as if part of her died on that mission. As if the regeneration of her body looked complete but really wasn't.

Lately, everyone has noticed a change in Wraith. She’s always been moody and withdrawn, but now she’s s...more

After reading book 1 in the Para-Ops series Chosen By Blood, I wanted to pull at the hair on my head. Why you ask? It's because I wanted to read book 2 Chosen By Fate right away and I knew it was going to be a long and agonizing wait for me. The main characters Wraith and Caleb O'Flare have this AMAZING tension in the 1st book and when I saw that book 2 was their story I couldn't wait to read more about them.

I loved this book better then the first. However i did miss when the whole team is together. I do understand why it was done. I just didnt like it.
I did love how Caleb made Wraith realize a lot of things. Apparently, all we need is love to save us. No matterhow much wr fight it, it is always thetewhen it is needed and when it is least expected.
Danielle
This book was so frustrating. Wraith and Caleb are constantly changing their minds, feeling sorry for themselves, and generally just being boring. They didn't get around to doing their urgent mission until the end. All of the secrets/spoilers were just miraculously realized in 25 pages in the end. And Wraith's big reveal of her human life? The solution? Weird as heck. It felt really forced and I was a little sick to my stomach...

However, Virna is a great writer and I liked all of the parts with...more

The heroine was tough, but so vulnerable on the inside. Rooted for her the entire book. A very fast read!
