Estie does not always like people. So when her grandmother reminds her to be a mensch, she'd rather not. She'd rather be a dog. Or a turtle. Or a seagull. Being a monkey can even make another kid laugh! But it can also make another kid cry, and that's when Estie and her grandmother find out what a mensch Estie can really be.

Estie the Mensch (by Jane Kohuth), does not like people. She thinks that they are smelly and pushy. She prefers animals and chooses to live in an imaginary world where she pretends to be an array of animals. This book resonated with me due to having a child who at the age of four wanted to grow up to be a lion! Estie wants to be a turtle, a dog, an octopus - anything other than a mensch, well-behaved good person. She's desperately shy and finds so much more to like about the animal world. That is until she meets a young boy named Petie who isn't shy in the least and who finds Estie's animal antics very funny, all of which gives her the confidence to relate on a more human level.

I got an autographed copy of this book from Goodreads giveaways. I immediately opened it and read it with my three daughters, aged 8 years and 3 years. They loved the illustrations and could all realate to Estie, who could sometimes act silly and be a pest, but deep down was truely a mensch (good girl). This was clearly illustrated at the end when she shared her icecream with her new friend.

Estie is charming! I love her independent "mensch" streak; each animal she transforms into is imaginative and delightful. The story leads to an important climax about what it means to be a mensch, or a good person, but Kohuth's brilliant text presents the lesson in a natural way. I love this book!
