Twist it twice and fangs are bared;
Twist it thrice? No one has dared!

I think this is an early Bruce Coville book, so it's a littel bit different in style than some of the others I read. But, I quite enjoyed it and found it a very nice little book for Halloween!
that you don't have to do ravage on a bully
Didn't read this one "back in the day", Coville was the My Teacher Fried My Brains guy long before I even heard of this or his other more famous books.
This is a good early reader book, even the expanded, revised edition of The Monster's Ring is very short and to the point offering up a lot for a little kid to love: rampant misbehavior, school mayhem, late-night adventures, all made possible by a ring purchased with pocket change from a spooky little shop.

In goodreads this is listed as #4 but it read like a series starter and the "What's Next" Database has it listed as #1. This was a very fun read about a boy who is getting bullied by an older boy at school and would do anything for the courage to stand up to him. While he is running away from this boy in the alleys downtown, he notices a magic shop that he's never seen before. The shopkeeper inside sells him a monster ring which has magical powers.

Russell Crannaker is going to have a great Halloween this year. He's going to be Frankenstein, staggering around with his eyes rolled back in his head. But there's a problem: Eddie, the school bully, continually pokes Russell, punches him, calls him names. And now Eddie's after him again. So what does Russell do? Run, like any kid with the good sense to save himself. Russell finds himself alone, standing in front of a strange looking shop: Elives' Magic Supplies. The ancient old man behin...more

Poor Russell Crannaker is being bullied. He's being bullied at school by Eddie, and he feels bullied by his parents when he can't seem to get a word in at home.
When Russell is running away from Eddie one afternoon, he stumbles upon a mysterious shop: Mr. Elives magic shop. It's here that he finds the monster's ring. The ring Russell has just purchased is more than a ring -it can transform Russell into a...more

This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I loved rereading it and was impressed by how well it holds up. Part werewolf, part Jekyll and Hyde, The Monster's Ring is a great exploration of childhood struggles for independence, control, and identity.
Overall a great book and I look forward to rereading (and reading 2 for the first time all) of the books in the Magic Shop series. I <3 Bruce Coville.

I listened to this book with one of my nephews. He wasn't too impressed. I was less impressed then him. The wrong attitudes and actions are taught in this book...like disrespect for adults and teachers, bullying bullies, and there seems to be no stranger danger awareness. Sure it might be a quick read, but it was a worthless read too.
It was vary exciting and it kept me wanting more. the main charicter goes throw alot in this book.a magic shop comes out of nowhere and shop keeper just gives a monster ring to a littile boy. i loved it alot.
the end is what really made me wish they another book.so read when you can.

Coville's Magic Shop books are an easy-read and would be good for 3rd through 5th graders. I wasn't quite as into this particular one as I was for "Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher." Monsyter's Ring wasn't quite as humorous or fully-fleshed. But I'd still enjoy reading it to my kids.
The first book in Coville's Magic Shop series. This one sets the pattern for the others that follow. Chased by bullies, the main character finds a magic shop where they purchase something that, through a series of misadventures, helps them see their own self worth.
This has been sitting on my son's bookshelf for a while, so I thought I'd check it out. It was about a twenty minute read for me, and it was cute. It's a great intro into the world of magic and fantasy for young readers.
what the buck? how come the picture on my book cover is different? i had finished this book, but i wanna be russel crannaker because he is awesome in the book. i mean not him, i mean the ring...
The story is about this kid who stepped into a magical shop and bought a ring. The shop soon disappears and the kid puts the ring on and turns into a monster on Halloween.
This was a pretty sweet book. I just remember some kid turning into a monster and flying. I guess that's pretty epic for an elementary school kid. Especially at Halloween.
This is a wonderful read aloud. Good for 4th - 6th grade. I read it to a 4th grade class and they absolutely loved. Do make sure you practice your best monster voice, you'll need it.
i read this like three years ago when i was looking through my sister's bookshelf. it was a bit scary at the time, but very absorbing
I had no idea that this was book #4; you can easily jump in! My boys and I listened to it on audio and it was lots of fun.
=D I love this book! It is teaches you that YOU can stand up to bullies without ANY magical stuff or what ever.
A great book for elementary students! Fun, fantasy, and real life problems mixed together. Well written.
Is the first Bruce Colville book I have read and it is also one of the best books I have read so far.
I remember reading this as a kid so I reserved a copy at the library and read it to Emma. She loved it!
3.5 stars from me... but I'll bet it will be a five star from Max.
this is a perfect book to read with your kids, especially around halloween!
Not quite as intriguing as Dragon Hatcher, but a fun story.
Makanya, kalo pake barang nggak jelas baca dulu aturan pakainya...
Oh, how I wish I had stumbled across this gem when I was 8!
i thought it was dumb and childish
good book...
