5+ stars – Historical/Regency Romance

Words seem wholly inadequate, my friends. Why are the best books always the hardest to review?! Alas, if only I could have clever Lady Whistledown write this.

Flirtatious, affable, charming, and witty Colin has been my favorite Bridgerton sibling from the beginning, and I was most looking forward to his story, especially knowing that the strikingly handsome, popular bachelor was being paired with his sister’s sweet best friend, plump, unpopular, wallflower,

★★★★½ I read this when it first came out over ten years ago and remember loving Colin. Though I’m a bit of a “re-reader,” I haven’t done so. Consequently, I jumped at the chance to join in a “buddy read,” the forth in this enduring series.

However, on re-read I was really impressed with Penelope. Don’t get me wrong: I still had heart palpitations over Colin and his deep green eyes. Nevertheless, I appreciated Penelope’s subtle straight-forw

”I am certainly not going to marry Penelope Featherington!”

Ever since we heard Colin Bridgerton utter, ummm, shout the above statement, we should have known that he’s going to eat his words sooner or later.

And eat them he did.

Penelope Featherington. She freshly comes out to society, out to meet the ton, with an excess of a few stones in her weight, and either orange/yellow/red gowns which doesn’t do her complexion any good. We can’t blame her. Her mother is a tyrant. But Penelope knows she does

Penelope Featherington has been in love with Colin Bridgerton for what seems like forever, from a young girl making her debut in society to a resign spinster. Penelope feelings have only grown throughout the years for Colin. Thinking she knew everything about Colin there was to know, Penelope comes across his hidden secret that starts to change her perspective of him in a surprising way that only draws them closer.
Colin Bridgerton has always been the laid-back charmer of the family, but behind

Penelope Featherington has been overlooked her entire life. She’s been told that she’s not pretty enough, too plump, too nervous and too quiet. And yet, Penelope probably has the most personality out of all her heroines in this series. Penelope is hands down my favourite heroine! I love seeing her growth as a character in the previous ones leading up to her own book, Romancing Mr Bridgerton with her long-time crush, Colin.

I wondered how Colin would redeem himself after

My Review:

What a fabulously fun read! I adored Colin and Penelope and especially Lady Danbury! Revisiting the rest of the Bridgerton family was truly a joy :)
Colin and Penelope make the perfect match and seeing close childhood friends grow into loving, adult soul mates was one of the greatest highlights in my reading adventures this year. I was smiling from the beginning to the end – laughing out loud and sighing often.

Another favorite! MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE IN THE SERIES!
Oh, this book made me so happy…

Seriously, JULIA QUINN CAN DO NO WRONG.

Anyway, Romancing Mister Bridgerton is Colin’s book, and I almost couldn’t believe who's his lady in this... let your jaws drop fellow readers, for she is the plainest of Janes, wallflower of wallflowers, ugly duckling, the one and only: Miss Penelope Featherington! (MY GOD) And I love her so! Even in the previous books as a minor character - my heart would ache for that poo

There is a perfect word to describe how I feel about Julia Quinn. It’s ‘meh’. I don’t love her, I don’t hate her, I will read her, I will quickly forget her.

I’m not sure why that is because she is very popular and other people seem to find her books, and this particular one especially, amazing. But to me they are just too cute. Too sweet. I don’t want cute and sweet. I’m sure you’ve gathered that much from my reviews – I can tolerate cute and sweet only in really homoeopathic doses.

Dear Ms Quinn, I bow down to you and your Bridgerton series. You have created such an intricate family tree that I have no hope of ever forgeting about. After reading book four, I find I am quite addicted to your writting.

I really couldnt help but love every single page of this novel. The story of Colin and Penelope feels like it has been a long time coming. Penelope is not the "young" debutant that most tend to be. She is considered a

Well, I'll probably have food thrown at me for the 3 stars. I would have gone 3.5 but not 4.

I'm shocked at how much I didn't get into this story. I tried. I really did. It's Julia Quinn. It's the Bridgertons. I persevered.

I'm bummed because I love this series so far and it may take someone giving me a ginormous shove to go to book 5.

Colin was a poo. Perhaps my expectations of him were too high. He was cranky, self-centered, and had some jealousy issues that totally turned me off. And poor Pen

Maybe it's because Colin reminded me of a boy I had a crush on in school...maybe it's because Penelope was never an ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swain, for she was always beautiful...maybe it's because I'm a total sap for a great love story...but one things for certain

Okay. Full disclosure before we even start this review:

1) Penelope Featherington is the queen of my heart.
2) Colin Bridgerton is bar none my absolute favorite male character in this entire series.
3) In the very first book, on like page 72 with absolutely no foreknowledge whatsoever, I decided that Colin and Penelope should get married.

So, you can imagine how I felt when it was time for me to read this book. And let me just say, it was everything I could have hoped for and more.

I started reading this to try to de-stress. I've never actually read an out-and-out romance before, but I heard Quinn wrote fluffy and fun regencies, and her style, at least at the beginning, was lively and engaging. However, as the novel progressed, more and more things began to annoy me. First, Quinn does something with POV that really bothers me, and which I am trying to delicately explain here without giving away the book's central mystery, slight as it is. Basically, Quinn has a revelation ...more

Another good one in the Bridgerton clan series. A big, juicy and totally shocking secret is revealed –at least I didn’t see it coming! It’s a shame the secret is discovered but I’m hoping for a “come back” in future books :)

Colin Bridgerton, Mr Suave, ends up being not so perfect after all and he falls in love with the very last person you’d expect if you’ve been following the series since book 1. Great story between the two of them, could have had a little more steam but the story itself is won

Rather disappointing read, especially since I enjoyed "An Offer from a Gentleman" so much. Got through it by sheer perseverance alone, not because I couldn't put the book down.

The dialogues and action in the first part are pretty shallow and boring (unless I'm missing something that I'm supposed to detect "between the lines") and the plotline about unmasking "Lady Whistledown" was really of very little interest to me. There are several characters - Lady Danbury, Mrs. Featherington, Eloise - who

BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN!!! ALL MY STARS ARE FOR YOU MS QUINN!

Prior to reading the book, i was already swamped with the impression that 'Romancing Mr.Bridgerton' is the most-favorite installment of the Bridgertons. Yup, almost every Hr-Quinn fan I know has come to admit and as much as I love being the opposing party (do not ask hahaha), they were all right and how I wish I could run up and hug everyone who recommended this beauty of a story to me. Oh man. This book was AMAZING in the beginning. The writing was clever, I was laughing out loud every other sentence, the characters were well rounded and anti-cliche, and the chemistry between the two leads was probably the best I've ever read since "And Then He Kissed Her" by Laura Lee Gurhke. The hero was actually NOT a brooding type for once and what he lacked in mysteriousness he made up for in boyish charm and wit like I've never seen in a Romance novel. The heroine was brilliant with a mi ...more

Oh, what a difference the second half of a book can make.

I want to be clear on this: when I was still only halfway through the book, I considered it a keeper. Penelope was wonderful: truly shy around anyone she didn't know well, with a few horribly painful/embarrassing moments in her life that Quinn actually took the time to show. I cringed in sympathy when Penelope came upon Colin just as he was telling his brothers that he wouldn't marry her and Penelope did what she could to preserve her dign

The beginning of this book was probably my favorite that I've read in a while. I'm definitely a sucker for romances where the hero or heroine has been in love with the other since childhood. I was definitely hooked from the first page, as I have so far throughout this series. It was definitely enjoyable but I feel like it wasn't quite on par with the first three. There were some things that Colin said and did that I didn't feel he apologized enough for. Penelope just seemed to forgive him when I ...more

This was GREAT! I don't think I stopped smiling through the whole thing. Colin, the Bridgerton family Golden Boy, finally realized what his mother had known all along - he needed to be with Penelope Featherington. The way their friendship turned to love on his part (she had loved him forever) was sweet and perfect. And the revelation of the identity of Lady Whistledown had me on the edge of my seat. I was surprised by who it was - never would have guessed. I hope she doesn't disappear forever th ...more

If you would have told me 15 years ago that I would be reading these kinds of books, I would have laughed in your face. I used to make fun of people who read these sort of "sappy" books (especially my mother). I never truly realized the beauty that lied within the pages of those romance books. To my surprise they aren't really that sappy. They are actually quite fun and, of course, romantic but they really do make you feel happy at the end. Also, perhaps, just a little bit hopeful that your happ ...more

The love story in book 3, Benedict’s, was love at first sight; Benedict and Sophie were knocked off their feet before they even said one word to each other. This may be my favorite book of the series. I like that the protagonists know each other for twelve years before the main part of the action takes place. To me, that is a lot more realistic than many of the "just meet, fall in love right away" type of stories.

It is funny how the author shows the mind of a seventeen year old girl. "This was love. Oh, this was love love love love love love. A silly repetition of words, perhaps, but that was precisely what Penelope doodled on a ridiculously expensi

Colin Bridgerton was considered by those among the ton as the charming, good natured one of the Bridgerton sons. Deep inside, he longed to have his own identity born of something more substantive than those adjectives. Penelope Featherington has surpassed the respectable age for participating in the seasons for the marriage minded and is settling into her role as that of a 28 year old spinster, along with her best friend, Eloise Bridgerton. I picked this book up because it was on SEVERAL "beta heroes" lists and I have read a couple of books with beta heroes that I REALLY enjoyed (and as a general rule I hate alpha heroes, and therefore 95% of romance novels.)

I know this was everybody's fave book in the series; well, it was not mine... Maybe because I had huge expectations after reading all the amazing reviews for this book.

I had several problems reading it. First, as we had known a lot about both characters from book one, it didn't feel like we had a lot to learn about them. Also, what was mentioned as new (their love for writing), felt forced. It was good, as all Quinn's books are, just not as good as the other books in this series.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand style, competing on the the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British an ...more
