Well let me start off and say this book is nothing like Cross Bones which I hated. This one is starting to get back to where Ms. Reichs was with Deja Dead. I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many have already did that. Let me say I enjoy the mystery. It didn't go too fast and it didn't drag out. I felt that most of it was believable. There weren't too many weird jumps of faith that were present in her last book, Cross Bones. I enjoyed the side story of the triangle of Pete, Ryan and ...more

It was nice to have Kathy Reichs get back to the basics. While I enjoyed the read, I was still disappointed by it. I first started reading Reichs when I, too, had thought of becoming a forensic anthropologist. I was quite enthralled with her descriptions and felt like I could easily see myself doing what she described in her books.
As she's progressively written more books, though, it seems like she's catering more and more to the masses. Which you need to do in order to keep a following ...more

If you like mysteries and forenics, then this is the book for you. It's written by a Canadian forensic anthropologist from Montreal. Kathy Reichs works for the Chief Examiner in North Carolina and Laboratoire de sciences et de Medecine Legale in Quebec.
This is her ninth book about a forensic anthropologist who is always getting too emotionally involved in strange murder cases. It's not too heavy on the science and tech language and it is fairly engaging. The story moves along quickly a...more

Another awesome book in the series!
I adore Tempe. I love her attitude, her personality. She's not without flaws, just like any human being, and I love reading about her - her feelings, her emotions. The novel is smooth with her thought process, and it wouldn't be the same without it.
Reading about her troubles between Pete and Ryan, it feels natural and completely real. Anyone in her situation would be questioning herself. I love how Reichs brings Tempe to life, like an everyday person th...more

I don't know if maybe I'm getting over this style, maybe too much Law and Order watching, but this was a little boring for me.
Yeah, it had all the classic KR stuff...bones, mystery, more bones, more mystery.
But it was so predictable! I think that's the main reason I was bored with it. Tempe's in trouble again, but now she has Ryan AND Pete to help her out, which is just annoying as hell. And throw in some 'colleague' never mentioned before, and there you go, another KRs book.

There's much to like about Kathy Reichs as an author. The forensic details in her books are always interesting. She creates and sustains suspense well. Her settings are rich, detailed, and sensual. Her characters' motives and relationships are complex and multifaceted. Her writing is transparent, the author invisibly pulling the strings behind the world she creates.

When you read Kathy Reichs, you can depend on a cohesive plot, enough gore to cause a few missed meals, and some good solid character development. "Break No Bones" doesn't disappoint. Tempe Brennan heads to the Charleston islands to assist a local coroner with her caseload. A missing heiress, vanishing homeless people, and visits by both her estranged husband and her longtime lover complicate Tempe's life.

Good mystery novel. Tempe Brennan is on a dig in Charleston with some UNC-Charlotte students when they discover a much more recent skeleton buried with the more ancient bones. More skeletal discoveries start turning up around Charleston and the plot thickens. Good pace that made the reading easy and fun. For those that live in Charlotte and went to/work at UNC-Charlotte, you'll enjoy all of those references. Since Reichs taught at UNC-Charlotte (and my husband loves to point out that she taught ...more

As I can't rate a book I haven't read, no stars here. There are many things that combined to stop me from reading this book.
1 - Temperance Brennan in the books is in no way related to Temperance Brennan in Bones, one of the best shows on TV right now. The humor isn't there, nor is the interesting family history.
2 - There is too much character development and not enough story. I got a little more than halfway through it, and hardly anything had happened. I don't know if I could do it ...more

I used to watch Bones and thought it was really interesing so I thought I'd read some of what Kathy Reichs wrote. However it didn't turn out to be as great as I thought it would be. It had a nice and steady flow of things happening and all but for me it was far too easy to predict. I get bored when it takes the characters pages and pages to find out what I caught on way back. Also she has a style of ending chapters with what happens next which didn't appeal to me. Overall the writing wasn't bad ...more

I've enjoyed most of these books, and this one was entertaining as well. I think they compare well to Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta books. One issue I have with both these books and the Kay Scarpetta books is that the supposedly intelligent women in the books are constantly getting themselves into physical danger, and being rescued by the men. In response to the earlier review comparing one of the books unfavorably to the series, I think the books seem much more realistic.

My first audiobook! Barbara Rosenblat did a great job in reading this, doing a very credible job with all the South Carolina accents. Her voice sounded deeper and older than I would've imagined the character's, but it also made me like the character more. The book itself was middling, as was the previous Reichs' "bones" mystery I read. The plot was utterly predictable and the villain exactly the person you thought it would be. I did enjoy it, though, thanks to Rosenblat.

This is her latest novel. I was curious to see if the TV Temperance would influence the way I see the Book Temperance. No fear they are definitely not the same. The plot for Break No Bones needs some editing. The relationships (Temperance/Ryan; Temperance/her ex) are the interesting parts of the books. It's only been a year between books and it's starting to show. Churning up a book each year is not good for Reichs. Likable book but not Reichs at top form.

People interested in Forensic Science
I had high hopes for this book after learning it inspired the hit TV show "Bones" but was overall disappointed in the story and dialogue. I think it may have just been a mismatch of genre between me and the book; I haven’t read for leisure in quite some time and just randomly picked this one of my bookshelf. Anyway, I would recommend it to anyone interested in forensic science or for those who just have time to read something random.

I found it on my own, thank you very much!recommends it for: Fans of the TV show "Bones"
This is the first kathy Reichs book I read and I was very impressed with it. Being a fan of the show "Bones", I found Kathy's work much more enriching on many levels and have slowly started to purchase her other books. Unfortunately, she writes faster than I can buy.
Her stories are compelling and heavily detailed. If you have a weak stomach, steer clear, but if you're a Forensic nut like me, read this. It's an awesome read.

Well, this is the first time I can say that I like the book better as a TV series. I did not feel attached to any of the characters. It seemed very "she did this, then she did this, then she did this." Not much character development. As far as the plot goes, it could have been condensed by a third and been more riveting. Seemed like a draft of how the author wanted things to go; it needs more flesh!! No pun intended.

I like Kathy Reichs and have enjoyed all of her books. "Break No Bones" was no exception. It is a good crime story with likable, human protagonists. But, having reread some of her older books after my recent stay in Montreal, where many of them take place, I admit that I like them better than her later works. The flaws make them more charming, and the stories are more surprising and less main-stream.

I read this because I'm addicted to the TV series 'Bones' with Emily Deschanel & David Boreanaz which is based on the Kathy Reichs novels. It was easy reading but a little slow and the Temperance Brennan character was quite different (not nearly as quirky as on the show). Not sure if I'll read any of K. Reichs other books; maybe if I'm at stranded at an airport for a few hours again...

An OK read for a weekend away from home. Not too exciting; I actually got annoyed with the main character for being so indecisive--geesh, you have TWO murder suspects, hold them BOTH for 24 hours instead of letting one go, then having the cops chase one, then deciding to set them on the OTHER on and getting mad for them taking SO LONG to get"back to you"
