While the valley is still a very strange place, the world of this book is much less existancially weird that in Volume 1. We have more human background characters and a more normal msetting of a psuedo-medieval tavern and fair. The mystery as to who or what the Bone cousins are deepens a bit as Boneville seems to be essentially a modern world.

If the first volume, Bone, Vol. 1: Out from Boneville got me immersed in this fantastic world, volume 2 make fall in love for this wonderful comic. I think I'm giving it 4 out of 5 instead of 5/5 (which I gave to vol. 1) because some of the novelty was lost a bit — I, of course, new what to expect of the art and the narrative.

I really enjoyed the first book and this one was just as fun. I love the world building that is going on. Some writers don’t have the ability to combined exposition and storyline, but Jeff does it nicely. You find yourself learning about the history of the characters, and the world at large, without you even knowing its happening. I really hate that Marvel or DC way of hitting you over the head with page after page of explaining what has happen before and what point the story is at. It’s a relief to not be reading it.
One of my favorite things about this book is that it feels like a complete story, rather than just the second part of a larger book. You can sit down and read it and feel satisfied. Yes I do want to keep reading and see where it goes, but on the last page I wasn’t left feeling dissatisfied. It seems like today everything is a saga, or a serial. Novels, movies, multiple title with multiple one shots and limited series comic books, everything is about getting you coming back for more. I’m glad that this book didn’t do that.
The other great thing about this book is that Jeff Smith is really funny. There are some great funny parts in here. One is particular had me laughing my ass off. It’s great to read something that has a serious undertone, but doesn’t think it can’t have some funny moments.

As this is the second book, I was unfamiliar with the origins of the "Bone" characters, but fell instantly enthralled with their lifestyle and storyline. As this is the second book, I was unfamiliar with the origins of the "Bone" characters, but fell instantly enthralled with their lifestyle and storyline. What makes this second chapter enjoyable is the level of magic, evil, and "paths of fate" that obviously lay before our characters. There is mystery, suspense, and some genuinely funny moments as our characters do classic nare-do-well things and thus have to deal with the consequences. For a child, this book is about a fixed cow race between the people of the village, Phoney Bone, and Granma Ben, but what kept me interested was the subsequent back-story that opened a more sinister and coincidentally fantastical element.

As I read more graphic novels, my eyes are beginning to focus on more than just the words and pictures, but also the background themes and events. "The Great Cow Race" demonstrated more than just a humorous race with cows, but a la Harry Potter, a darker element at work that is constantly behind the scenes. The last few frames of this story, the conversation between Granma and Lucius, sent a pulse of excitement through my spine as well as goose bumps over my arms. The thought of a possible war brewing and an unfamiliar structure made me want to immediately get the next of the series. Alas, first I must see how it all begins. I must get the first book and start with the origins.

As I review this great book, I must admit, Scholastic has done a great job and a poor job all at the same time. The great element is the coloring of this edition. I remember seeing the Bone series at a bookstore in town and was rather unconnected with the black and white storyboards, but now, with the ample use of grays and whites, coupled with the "cartoonish" reds, blues, and greens, you have a story that both illustrates the humor as well as the danger. The bad is that I never read this story with a child in mind. Outside of the coloring, the story itself is not ... at least in my eyes ... one for those that are young. There are scary beasts, eerie dragons, and again, that unknown element, that may not be suitable for the suggested "Grade 4" reading level. Maybe I am behind the times, but outside of the actual cow race, there wasn't much that I believe those at a "Grade 4" reading level would enjoy. Personally, I found the story coupled with the images a unique read, but would a youthful reader find the same? Maybe, maybe not.

Overall, I thought this was a great story. I am very eager to read the first in the series as well as see where Smith goes with these obviously troubled characters. I am excited to see where the future "war" will bring us and how closely Smith related Tolkien's ideas to a more graphic level. For those interested in a younger fantasy genre, this is a quick read as well as a mis-marketed book. I loved turning the pages and discovering a twisty ending that leaves you wanting so much more! While I didn't find myself laughing as much as other critics have mentioned, it wasn't what I wanted from the story. I wanted mythical characters combined with a level of fantasy, and needless to say, I was not disappointed.(less)

I actually made sure to read "The Great Cow Race" from start to finish, though, so I'll give a comprehensive review here. After American Born Chinese, Bone is really the first graphic novel that I've read all the way through, and I have to admit that the genre is growing on me. "The Great Cow Race" was the volume I'd skipped over before as I'd flipped through the Bone compilation, so I went back to read it now, and I really liked it!

Jeff Smith's placement of "The Great Cow Race" in the context of the Bone arc makes sense--we've already had plenty of exposition in "Out From Boneville" (Vol. 1), so at this point, it's time to have some fun and see the characters in a different light before the main conflict begins (as it does in volume 3, "Eyes of the Storm"). If the whole Bone series were somehow condensed into a movie, then you would probably expect the light comedic moments (with some more characterization coming in) to occur here, and they do. Almost the whole volume consists of Thorn, Gran'ma Ben, and the Bones' "tourism" and goofing around during the Barrelhaven fair, especially Fone Bone's trying to spend some time with Thorn before they part, and Phoney Bone's trying (with Smiley's help) to make a quick buck. (Er, a "quick egg"--they use eggs for currency. I love how delightfully backward Jeff Smith has made this setting!) The climax of this volume--and, comically, the biggest piece of entertainment these rural peasants have all year--is the Cow Race, which for some reason Gran'ma Ben is allowed to enter (and wins annually). But Grandma's yearly winning streak is threatened when Phoney Bone scams almost everyone in town into placing bets on a "Mystery Cow"--and when Fone Bone accidentally runs into two Rat Creature sentries.

What else can I say about Bone? It's well-written and well-paced. The art style is beautiful--we don't get to see as much of it in this volume, but Smith is a great artist and draws beautiful profiles, faces half-hidden in shadow, etc. There were some surprising and comical moments that made me laugh and show a bit of the book to someone else. I'd recommend the book heartily to anyone who can get their hands on it! (Note for parents: In this volume--and moreso later in the series--there is a little bit of suggested innuendo because of Fone Bone's crush on Thorn, as well as scenes with drinking and alcohol. This volume doesn't have a lot of violence, but later ones do when a war breaks out. So, I wouldn't have any problem with someone 14 or 16 or older reading the book, but some parents would want to go through them before deciding whether their 12-ish-year-old is ready for them.) My only real grievance with Bone would be that I really do not like Smith's Pogo-esque tendency to put a word or two in every other sentence in bold, just to emphasize it (like this). But that's a small price to pay for such an entertaining read.(less)

My five-year-old wanted me to read this to him. It took three nights of reading about 50 pages each night (not hard to do with a graphic novel). I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. This volume still didn't amp things up QUITE to what I was hoping it would achieve, but that's in large part due to the fact that this volume was still developing things to come (which I now realize because I'm now almost six volumes into the series.)

The plot for the arc of this volume is perfectly fine, but it felt more like a bridge. It had a clearer direction than the first volume and the plotting felt tighter, but not a whole lot happens. There's the festival, which builds up tension for the upcoming cow race -- which we know won't end well because of Phoney Bone's scheming -- so there'a a much clearer "end game" in this volume, if you will. It's obviously not the end game of the series, but the volume is obviously leading up to *something*, and that something is how shit is going to hit the fan during the cow race.

Phoney continues to be a really unlikable character, Smiley is still crazy, I'm still kind of weirded out by Fone Bone's infactuation with Thorn, and I'm perplexed by Thorn's outfits which vary from dresses/skirts being tight and reallyyy short, to other outfits that look like potato sacks and somehow still show all kinds of skin. What I'm saying is: I find Thorn oddly sexualized. But these are honestly fairly minor quibbles I had and didn't really affect my enjoyment of the story as a whole (except for Phoney Bone -- I hate him. A lot.)

The art continues to look good (actually, the consistency of the quality of the art in this series is really good, the amount of time Smith took to draw and write series) and the translation to colour is still as smooth as ever. Some of the facial expressions from the Bones in this actually had me cracking up laughing. There was also a scene in particular (with the giant bee) that had me cackling quite loudly as well. So everything felt better from the first volume overall: better writing, better story, better humour.

Final Verdict: This volume still didn't bring the AWESOME that I was hoping for, but it was definitely an improvement from the first. The storytelling felt tighter and more cohesive and I found the humour quite good as well. This is still a story obviously geared for children, but the cross-over appeal was more apparent here. I still find Phoney Bone despicable (in a bad way), and Fone Bone's infactuation with Thorn is still odd, and I found Thorn oddly sexualized, but other than that, everything else was pretty good.(less)

Amazing what scamming people will do to you, one thing it will do is get you chased by a mob who wants to kill you. Jeff Smith did a great job on Bone The Great Cow Race. I absolutely loved the part when all three of the bone cousins where being chased by cows and rat creatures.

I rated this book 4 stars because it was a fun book to read and had a great adventure to enjoy.I recommend this book to readers who like adventure. "The Great Cow Race" is the continuation of the Bone saga after the events of the first trade paperback (TPB), "Out from Boneville." The story does pick up the pace here and get more interesting. Here I am on volume 2 of Bone and I am already pretty sure that I will love the rest of this series. The simple appeal of something looks and reads like it's for kids transfers very well onto something on a much grander scale--something where the plot thickens into a mythology that, in this volume, is just starting to reveal itself.

This picks up where the first volume left off, right before the Great Cow Race where Phoney and Smiley Bone are planning to make some cash through some not so honest means and Fone Bone is still trying to win the heart of Thorn but not with the greatest success. Once again the story and artwork are superb and the character and story development are perfect (but I'll be honest I would've liked more of the Dragon but I'm hoping he'll be cropping up plenty in the next few volumes so I wont hold it...more
