This is the second one out of the 9 bone series. This first takes place with fone bone and thorn at the Spring Fair. Then it turns to the two other brothers, Phonicble bone and smiley bone working at the tavern. They are organizing a scheme for the BIG COW RACE. Grandma Ben, thorns grandma is competing, as a cow! she wins every year They are trying to make everyone bet on the "mystery cow" that smiley bone is going to disguise himself in. They run into company in the race and all plans are ruine...more
While the valley is still a very strange place, the world of this book is much less existancially weird that in Volume 1. We have more human background characters and a more normal msetting of a psuedo-medieval tavern and fair. The mystery as to who or what the Bone cousins are deepens a bit as Boneville seems to be essentially a modern world.
The main slapstick plot of Phoney and Smiley trying to scam the Cow Race is fun if predictable. The romantic storyline between Fone Bone and Thorn is borin...more

A: This graphic novel is the second in the series. It begins as Thorne and Fone Bone return to the valley so that Fone can collect his cousins and return to Boneville. But, a get-rich-quick cow race fixing scheme by his cousin, Phoney, ensures disaster. When Fone Bone is attacked by rat creatures they run headlong into the ongoing cow race and a stampede ensues. While they start to repair the damage caused by the rat-creatures and cows, Smith drops hints about a coming war.

If the first volume, Bone, Vol. 1: Out from Boneville got me immersed in this fantastic world, volume 2 make fall in love for this wonderful comic. I think I'm giving it 4 out of 5 instead of 5/5 (which I gave to vol. 1) because some of the novelty was lost a bit — I, of course, new what to expect of the art and the narrative.
It doesn't diminishes the quality of what Jeff Smith did, nonetheless. Actually, it kinda enhances it, because he allows the reader to be more "into" the valley and the lif...more

The second book in the Bone series is centered on the Great Cow Race, which should come as no surprise since the book is subtitled The Great Cow Race. It’s an annual event the town holds where everyone brings out their best cow to compete. People even bet on the races, so there is quite a bit at stake for everyone. One thing of note is that Grandma Ben is the only human to take place in the race, and is generally the winner. Phoney Bone sees this as a great opportunity to make some money, or so...more
"The Great Cow Race", for those that have missed the number two on the spine, is actually the second compiled book of Smith's adventures with his loveable, yet strangely built, main character Fone Bone. As this is the second book, I was unfamiliar with the origins of the "Bone" characters, but fell instantly enthralled with their lifestyle and storyline. What makes this second chapter enjoyable is the level of magic, evil, and "paths of fate" that obviously lay before our characters. There is my...more

By skimming and skipping (and re-skimming and re-skipping) around the complete Bone one-volume compilation, I think I've basically read the entire thing. I actually made sure to read "The Great Cow Race" from start to finish, though, so I'll give a comprehensive review here. After American Born Chinese, Bone is really the first graphic novel that I've read all the way through, and I have to admit that the genre is growing on me. "The Great Cow Race" was the volume I'd skip...more

This is the second Bone graphic novel out of nine. This was a great addition to the story and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Fone Bone and his buddies are getting ready for the Great Cow Race. Grandma is hoping to win, but Phoney Bone is creating some money mischief in the betting pool that is bound to get the Bones in trouble again. In addition to this the broader more mysterious storyline is also added to: Thorne is having strange dreams that she confesses to Fone Bone and Fone Bone is again attacked...more

Fone Bones and friends are getting ready for the cow race - Grandma Ben is sure to win as she always wins. But Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone have something else in mind.
This is number 2 in the Bone series and just like the first, I thought this was great! The story is interesting and really keeps you hooked. Plus the characters keep you reading.
I know the rat creatures are supposed to be some of the bad guys, but I always laugh at them.

This book picked up right where it left off in the first book. Fone Bone comes up with a mischevious plan to throw the betting at the great cow race. He makes up a cow called the "Mysterious Cow" and says it is the fastest cow that has ever lived. He also claims that Gran is too old and is getting weak. He has Smiley dress up in a cow costume and pretends to be the "Mystery Cow" and is going to throw the race so him and Fone Bone can keep the bets. During the cow race rat creatures interfered,...more
Reason for Reading: Next in the series.
The story continues on from Vol. 1 with everyone arriving at the anticipated spring fair. Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone put their plan into action to scam the townspeople and Gran’ma Ben is ready to take on the cows in the annual cow race. Of course all sorts of shenanigans happen and nothing works out the way it should, well except for Gran’ma Ben. Thorn is having strange dreams about the past and the Rat Creatures are after Phoney Bone but with orders to ki...more

I know that this is a easy peasy lemon squeezy book. It's just that it's vacation and I didn't want to be overwhelmed by reading a huge book. So I'll just read a bunch of these instead. In this book, the mystery starts revealing itself and everything about Thorn and that same dream. However Smiley and especially Phoney Bone decide to mess everything up by messing with the cow race. I love the bone books because of how the characters are portrayed. They are all their own attitude and always have...more
Bone:
The Great Cow Race
When the Bone cousins (Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley) get run out of town, they found their way to the village of Barrellhaven. In this sequel, they plan to go back home to Boneville until Phoney Bone decides to risk everything on another one of his schemes. He thinks of a way to get rich with the annual cow race. His plans don’t go like he planned (as usual). They get chased by Rat Creatures, and Phoney Bone is now also hated by the village of Barrellhaven.

My five-year-old wanted me to read this to him. It took three nights of reading about 50 pages each night (not hard to do with a graphic novel). I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I generally don't get into graphic novels. It was pretty cute, didn't have inappropriate pictures, language, etc. like some graphic novels tend to have. Boneville residents Fone, Phony and Smilely have been kicked out of their town and now live in a valley populated by humans, rat creatures and a dragon. The mai...more

Why I Read It: Volume one of this series didn't blow me away, but it had enough that I wanted to come back for more. I was confident that the series would bring more to the table.
This volume still didn't amp things up QUITE to what I was hoping it would achieve, but that's in large part due to the fact that this volume was still developing things to come (which I now realize because I'm now almost six volumes into the series.)
The plot for the arc of this volume is perfe...more

The book Bone:The Great Cow Race grabbed my attention because of how the cover had cows and monsters. At the same time there was two guys running away from the, but one in a cow suit. Since the book had the title The Great Cow Race i knew that it had to do something with a rcae and cows. Which made it funny because you dont really hear or see any cow races.

I think this book is really funny and entertaining.Bone has nice and funny friends who are their to help him and then, he is always helping his cousins, Phoney Bone who is the selfish cousin, and of course, he helps Fone Bone also, the Bone with no brain that helps Phoney Bone in his scam about setting bets and telling people lies about the mystery cow and Gran'ma Ben, in the 2nd book of Bone's adventures.

Smith,Jeff.(2005). Bone The Great Cow Race. New York:Scholastic.(132pp.).
Amazing what scamming people will do to you, one thing it will do is get you chased by a mob who wants to kill you. Jeff Smith did a great job on Bone The Great Cow Race. I absolutely loved the part when all three of the bone cousins where being chased by cows and rat creatures.

I rated this book 4 stars because it was a fun book to read and had a great adventure to enjoy.I recommend this book to readers who like adventure. Later on in the story he meets up with Phoney and Smiley to get to the long trip ahead of them to get to Boneville. They head to the cow race. "The Great Cow Race" is the continuation of the Bone saga after the events of the first trade paperback (TPB), "Out from Boneville." The story does pick up the pace here and get more interesting. The humor was a lot more appealing to me (less ridiculously goofy and more genuinely funny), and I found myself tearing through the entire TPB in about an hour without stopping. Although I'd felt ambivalent about the Bone series before reading this TPB, to me it was the turning point to solidify my inte...more

Here I am on volume 2 of Bone and I am already pretty sure that I will love the rest of this series. The simple appeal of something looks and reads like it's for kids transfers very well onto something on a much grander scale--something where the plot thickens into a mythology that, in this volume, is just starting to reveal itself.
Standout sections in this book, for me, include the four-page exchange between the two rat creatures as they hide from Kingdok after the race and the chapter "Up on...more

This picks up where the first volume left off, right before the Great Cow Race where Phoney and Smiley Bone are planning to make some cash through some not so honest means and Fone Bone is still trying to win the heart of Thorn but not with the greatest success. Once again the story and artwork are superb and the character and story development are perfect (but I'll be honest I would've liked more of the Dragon but I'm hoping he'll be cropping up plenty in the next few volumes so I wont hold it...more
