This book is aimed at the younger readers and is quite an easy read, i found it a really heartwarming story and couldnt put it down. The story is set in Scotland and starts with the discovery of a rare birds nest on the farmland belonging to one of the boys, he starts a friendship with a young local girl , they both realise the importance of secrecy to protect the bird. The girl has been abandoned by her mother and has returned to live with her alcoholic grandfather and has a hard time with the More...

I loved this book. Simple as that. It started quite slowly, with kids poaching fish in a Scottish burn, lambs being fed on a farm, and friends bickering over the things which seem important when you’re ten. And because I was brought up somewhere a bit similar, I stuck with it for a few chapters. But then suddenly the gentle writing got under my skin, the story heated up, and I was gripped. I had started reading it without preconceptions, without even reading the blurb (a great way to read any bo More...

I read about this book in a newspaper article about great kids' books. The title and subject appealed at once, so I bought it. It's an engaging story, well-written and very evocative of the wilds of Scotland. I take the point made by another reviewer that Rob and Euan are very similar - one of these two characters could have been lost without difficulty, and what happens to Iona could also have been expanded - but overall I thought this novel was terrific. Its plot cleverly links Scotland with T More...

OMG !! I read this book in about 2 hours and a bit, 226 pages. What can i say. I'm absolutely speechless!! First of all I would recommend this book to confident readers 11 and above although it depends on your reading ability. This book is definitely for nature lovers like (me). The story is set in a small village in Northern Scotland where a boy named Callam lives. He forms a strong friendship with a quiet girl named Iona who discovers an Osprey's nest also called an eyrie. This bird has not ha More...

Can't seem to get on with my serious reading - too much to do and too much of it brain-stretching - but the old interlude reads are doing well. Just been sent this by a friend as a possible ELT reader for my students. Had to read it first to check it out... What can I say? Blubbed like a girl! Ospreys, sick kids, heartwarming acts of kindness, ospreys again, lochs and the Gambia - this book has the lot. BUY for a kid in your life who likes nature (good for 10 year olds and up until the teen mons More...

Sky Hawk is quite a rich book, filled with vivid descriptions of Callum's world. Callum lives in a village in Scotland and his family own a farm. Like most kids he's interested in the latest technology and hanging round with his friends. He first meets Iona when she's trying to catch a fish, on Callum's land. Well, his father's. Callum's friends, particularly Rob, weren't very interesting or likeable to me but I did start to like them more as the story went on.

I liked this book because it's about a boy who likes creatures and football, just like me. Only he didn't like creatures until a girl told him to, you know what girls are like. The creature is this amazing rare bird called an Osprey and they have to keep it secret or else crooks will come and take her eggs. I found out from this book that Ospreys have to fly to Africa every year just to keep warm, then they come back to Scotland to rear their young - and my mum complains about having to go to th More...

This was a really beautiful book. Simple, honest, and very moving, but in an understated way. The book deals with some very difficult emotional issues, but the author totally resisted the urge to dwell on sentimentality or descend into mawkishness. There were some moments of incredible tension as well as heart warming emotion. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book which is really memorable after you first read it and leaves you thinking about it for ages. I engulfed it in one day shut up in m room with a hot chocolate. It's easy to read especially if you're travelling somewhere on a long journey.

A really beautiful book. Felt quite classic at times, but was brought bang up to date with the use of GPS to track an osprey, and email which linked the main character with a child in Africa. A quality read which teaches kids about nature without being at all preachy.

We listened to this book as an audiobook in the car as a family with children ages 8 and 11. It is a beautiful and uplifting story if not sad at times. It is for those who love nature and animals. We couldn't wait for the next chapter, strongly recommended!

Glorious book - if you want your 8 to 12 year olds to read something other than Vampire Snog novels then try this one out - beautiful heartwarming story, fantastic detail and characters and just a lovely lovely read. Equally good for boys or girls and I thoroughly enjoyed it - everyone should read it!

I read this with my 8 yr old granddaughter, and we both loved it. It had so many ideas it it from conservation, GPS tracking, emailing & tracking across continents, as well as emotional connections between children and adults. Brilliant!

Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis is about a boy named Callum. One day he meets Iona who tells him an incredible secret.Ospreys are living in the woods beside his farm.Ospreys are endangered and are protected. He and Iona make a promise to keep the ospreys a secret but when Iona dies and the female osprey dissapears halfway through her migration will Callum be able to save the female osprey or will she disapear?
I picked this book up because I wanted to see if the books by Gill Lewis were good and they were.

A nesting pair of ospreys appears on a remote farm in Scotland for the first time in 100 years, causing a stir. New friendships are made and old ones tested as everyone in the village is affected. A beautiful book.

A decent tale. In fact, for all that actually happens it's told really well--it kept me interested. The characters are believable and so is the narrative. If you like Morpurgo, you'll love this.

Liked it.

I couldn't put it down it was a great book. I wouldn't normally read an animal story but as this was one of the Solihull Book Award books I just had to try it.
