Who can imagine an orangutan being friends with a dog? Is it even possible?

With Suryia and Roscoe it is!

Dogs and orangutans rarely meet, and when they do, they are naturally shy around each other. But when Suryia the orangutan first meets Roscoe, a stray dog, they become best friends from the start.

Suryia & Roscoe is filled with cute pictures and the story of an orangutan and its dog and the two look like the best of friends. Yes, you read that correctly! It’s the pictures for me that are more what the book is all about. However, the preserve that they live on is the most important part of their story. Thought it’s not mentioned much, it’s there enough to get you thinking and maybe have kids asking...more

I admit to being partial to this particular book because it has a hound. Not just any hound, a Bluetick Coon Hound, which we used to own. The beautiful pictures in this book capture exactly the 'hound' attitude towards life. It is no surprise that a Blue Tick wanders aimlessly into a exotic animal rescue park, thought the author seems surprised, hound lovers will know that Roscoe (as he is christened by the park) was just being a hound i.e. wandering very far far from home on the trail of someth...more

PB48: A very cute nonfiction picturebook. I am a sap when it comes to animals, dogs and monkeys actually being my favorite so this picturebook just touched my heart. It shows the how friends can be found in the most unlikely people. The pictures are adorable and I think it is impossible to look through the picturebook without smiling. The text probably could have been better, but everyone is so distracted by the cuteness of the pictures the words barely matter. I would recommend to all pet lover...more

Suryia the orangutan was busily playing with Bubbles the elephant at the wildlife preserve in South Carolina when a stray dog found his way onto the preserve. What follows is the true story of this unusual friendship, illustrated by photographs which capture it all. The photos were my favorite; Suryia poses for photos with the cheesiest grins and the funniest faces.
A sweet, true story.
Recommend to all animal lovers.
Jenny
Not only is this the story of a wildlife preserve in my own state, but the photographs are brilliant, engaging and could stand alone as the story. Any child or adult will enjoy this true story of friendship between Suryia the orangutan and how he found his best friend, Roscoe the dog.
Jennifer
I admit it--I just get a kick out of the pictures, whether the "story" is true or not. Although, Roscoe the blue-tick bloodhound does seem to like Suriya the orangutan. I mean, a monkey trying to feed a dog a banana--what's cuter than that!?

I think maybe I'll need a new shelf about animal friends of different species, or maybe just Owen and Mzeee Alikes. Anyway, this one is OK but could have benefited from better writing and more story. The photographs will keep kids attention and I guess it could be a personal narrative model.

PB#32: This picturebook was so cute! It was an adorable story about an unexpected friendship that serves as a great example to encourage kids to think outside the box. It was well written with wonderful supplemental photographs!
Susan
Delightful true story about a stray dog who wandered into a rare animal preserve and immediately became friends with an orangutan. Super photographs of the animals together. Students who love animals will adore this book.
Nick
Yea its a children's book, but youve gotta have a heart of cold black stone to not be moved by these photos. Its an orangutan and a dog that are best friends! It's just about the cutest thing ever!
Robyn
Well now I think I'm going to intentionally seek out these type of books. Another AWESOME animal story, but the photographs in here take the cake!!!!
Angie
LOVE the photos. And while it made it a little less interesting for myself as an older reader (considerably less detail than some of the other "unusual animal friendship" books on the market) that is exactly what made it accessible to younger readers. Not so much text (and relatively simple vocabulary) means they could actually read it! Not a beginner book by any means ... but two to three sentences per page (plus a few with more) means ... oh, what. An on target second grader? Or maybe mid-year...more

Add this to your list of true animal stories and unlikely friendships. An orangatan and a dog become bffs. What's not to love??

Barry Bland's photographs are outstanding. Simple text that tells a wonderful story of friendship.

Cute easy text. Who knew that orangutans could have cheesy smiles for the camera?

While the topic is overdone, the book will be enjoyed by children.

How cute is this?

A cute nonfiction book about an unusual friendship, similar to Tara and Bella. The photographs show a beautiful dog, but the pictures seem posed rather than candid. Overall, a good nonfiction book to introduce to kindergarten or first grade. Text is somewhat simplified for second grade and up.

aaaaawwwwwwwwwww!!!! Who wouldn't want to read a true story about a unconventional duo like Suryia the orangutan and Roscoe the stray dog. This friendship begins on a wildlife preserve in South Carolina. Adorable photographs that each make your heart melt. O the cuteness!
Holly Thompson
The real photographs of the animals in this book are awesome! I can't say I am a big animal fan, but learning just a little bit about some animals that I don't see except for in a zoo was kind of fun. This book will make you want to hug an orangutan or your dog!
Beth
As much as I love inspiring books about animals, the writing in this book didn't make me feel anything. The pictures were cute but that was about it.
Nari
the pictures are adorable and the story is cute. The writing style is very simple and choppy.
